* WHEN...For the Winter Weather Advisory, until 4 PM EST this

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous 
  conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. The 
  cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions 
  are not taken.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Roads that were wet Thursday afternoon are
  now likely icy. The combination of moisture freezing on area
  roadways and new snowfall will make for treacherous road
  conditions, and bitter wind chills will maintain dangerous
  winter weather conditions into tonight.

.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will approach from the west tonight and cross
the area with abundant moisture on Thursday. The front will then
move off the Eastern Seaboard on Christmas Day, ushering in very
cold air in its wake. Dry high pressure builds in and will persist
over the weekend, with another cold front arriving early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 310 pm EST: The forecast remains on track for the rest of
the afternoon. After the sun goes down...we shall see. No
changes for the next few hours.

Not much has changed with the overall picture in terms of the setup
for the passage of a strong Arctic cold front on Thursday. The
cold front will continue to organize to our west this evening as
a strong short wave drops down into the base of the upper trof
over the srn Plains, helping to strengthen an already formidable
low level jet that will inject copious amounts of moisture from
the Gulf of Mexico. Expect to see a gradual increase in light rain
production initially near the Blue Ridge Escarpment from mid/late
evening onward, then expanding across the wrn half of the fcst area
from there. Initial precip will be relatively light but will serve
to wet things down over the higher terrain. Warm advection will
all but insure that precip will be all liquid. Winds will also
gradually strengthen in response to the approaching trof. The
ongoing Wind Advisory will be left intact, but not expanded at
this time because the surface wind guidance does not appear to be
any more dire than previous runs.

The situation really ramps up around daybreak Thursday with the
arrival of a stout low level jet that brings a very strong flow
of Gulf moisture to bear on the southerly upslope areas of the
mtns. The first concern we have for the forecast will be flash
flooding, mainly over the mtns of northeast Georgia and the upper
French Broad Valley. The QPF has not changed enough in the positive
direction to change our thinking with regard to a watch, and it also
remains below the 1 hr/3 hr Flash Flood guidance. Although enough
might fall in a short enough period of time to cause some minor
problems, widespread flooding is not expected. The French Broad at
Blantyre might get very close to flood stage. Therefore, a Watch
will not be issued at this time, but certainly bears keeping an eye
on. Needless to say...strong forcing + deep moisture = 100% rain.

Once we get to the afternoon, the focus will quickly shift to the
wrn Piedmont as the low level jet translates east. Low level shear
will be very impressive...in excess of 60kt easily. The guidance
allows for a plume of sfc-based CAPE to advect northward into the
Carolinas...but mainly east of I-77...late in the day. Consultation
with the CAMs suggest the primary threat to be to our east based on
updraft helicity streaks in the HREF, with a much greater threat
toward the NC Coastal Plain. Nevertheless...most of the CAMs
show the development of some linear convective feature between
18Z and 21Z over the wrn Piedmont. The SPC Day 2 Marginal still
looks well-placed east of I-77, but this one will be close enough
to keep a keen eye on late Thursday. The threat should end by 00Z
at the very latest.

     By which time the cold air behind the front will be blasting
eastward and over the mtns. Guidance shows the cold air arrival to
be rapid and impressive...in 'flash freeze' territory...dropping
off about 15 degrees in 2-3 hours. A quick changeover to snow is
expected after 21Z, first over the Smokies, and then over the rest
of the mtns. Enough precip will linger over the mtns as the cold
air arrives that we will have saturation into the dendritic growth
zone along the TN border. We have the potential to pick up a quick
1-3 inches in the early evening in that location, especially from
Madison County northward. A quick transition to NW Flow snow will
take place in the mid/late evening with snow production migrating
to the upslope areas along the TN border. All told, the northern
four counties have an excellent potential to pick up 3-5 inches
on Christmas Eve, so the Winter Storm Watch will be upgraded to a
Warning. Surrounding that, the consensus is for a lighter amount
of snow apart from the highest elevations of the Smokies. The snow
should taper off by around daybreak on Christmas. The potential for
a flash freeze along with the light snow suggests it a good idea to
issue a Winter Weather Advisory surrounding the Warning and also
to agree with neighboring offices. Temps will drop well into the
teens by sunrise Christmas. Lingering strong winds will probably
necessitate the issuance of a Wind Chill Advisory eventually,
but this will be addressed later.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 230 PM EST Wednesday...The axis of a deep upper trough/closed
low will be crossing the forecast area during the day Christmas
Day. Anomalously cold low-level thicknesses and ongoing 850 mb
CAA will result in one of the colder Christmas days we've had
in a while. Temps will only warm a few degrees from the morning
lows, resulting in highs in the teens and 20s in the mountains,
and 30s Piedmont. A brisk westerly breeze will make it feel even
colder with wind chills staying in the single digits and teens
mountains and 20s Piedmont. There may be periods of isolated to
scattered light snow showers along the TN border thru the day,
with one last surge in the early evening. Skies will be partly
to mostly sunny during the day and clear out Friday night. Winds
will become lighter, but it will be another chilly night in the
mountains with some wind chills falling below zero. Lows will be
5 to 15 deg in the mountains and mainly 15-20 across the Piedmont.

Fortunately, the really cold temps will be brief, as the upper
trough pivots east. So temps should rebound nicely from Friday's
readings, but still about 10 degrees below normal under sunny skies.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 300 PM EST Wednesday...The medium range looks very quiet, as a
flat upper ridge persists over the eastern CONUS and a large
Canadian high pressure system settles over the region. There will be
a dry cold front that slips in late Sunday into Monday. Previous
model runs showed more moisture with this front, and are trending
toward basically no measureable precip. The front will bring some
increase in clouds MOnday and reinforce below normal temps for
Tuesday and Wednesday with a dry wedge-like pattern. The next storm
system will still be to our west thru Wednesday, but may bring our
next rain chances into Wednesday night.

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Starting to see evidence of the moisture
return ahead of an approaching cold front, in the form of high
clouds coming in from the W and SW...and an area of low VFR
stratocu developing up from the south...moving north across the
lower Piedmont at issuance time. We should remain VFR through the
evening hours as clouds increase. Wind will remain SE. Conditions
will go downhill after operations wrap up this evening. Precip
chances increase with deepening moisture and upslope flow after
03Z. We will employ a PROB30 to handle the onset of rain showers
and the arrival of MVFR stratocu because amendments are unlikely at
this point. The timing has not changed significantly with regard to
the arrival of the more steady and heavier precip around the time
that ops start in the morning. Ceiling is still expected to drop
to IFR/LIFR at all sites with a strengthening S wind. Temporarily
lower cig/vis should be expected, but such details are left out
for now. Thunderstorms are unlikely. The bigger problem will be
low level wind shear as a very strong low level jet moves overhead
in the morning hours. All sites get a LLWS remark. The TAF ends
before we have to be concerned with a change to snow at KAVL.
The latter period at KCLT still looks mainly low MVFR with rain
showers. A line of stronger convection, and possible thunderstorms,
may move across KCLT in the late afternoon, but that detail was
also left out for the time being.

Outlook: Some wintry precipitation will be possible over the NC
mountains Thursday afternoon and night. Conditions should improve
outside the mtns Thursday evening with the passage of the cold
front. Dry high pressure will return through the weekend.
