AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 333 PM CDT Mon Mar 9 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Tuesday) Issued at 332 PM CDT Mon Mar 9 2020 After seeing almost all types of wintry precipitation today, the remaining snowfall will be pulled out of the area as the surface low pressure system south of our area moves off to the east. A surface high pressure from the north quickly moves in leading to a cold, albeit around normal, Tuesday morning. Due to the precipitation we had today, there is a possibility for untreated roads to develop some light ice on them. Models have trended towards colder overnight temperatures, so have lowered temperatures a bit to reflect that with lows in the mid 20s. More precipitation is possible tomorrow as a result of two processes at work. Zonal flow sends another short wave over our area, with a pocket of mid-level frontogenesis leading to chances for some snow mainly north of Highway 14. As temperatures warm, expect a switch over to rain later in the morning. Not expecting much measurable precipitation out of this, ranging from a tenth of an inch of snow to half an inch in areas of southwestern MN. Largely along and south of I-90, some mid-level instability moves in leading to additional chances for rain showers tomorrow afternoon. Around a quarter of an inch of rain is possible across portions of northwestern Iowa. As the short wave moves through overnight, cooler temperatures and the loss of the dendritic growth zone lead to the low possibility of some light mixed precipitation. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday Night through Monday) Issued at 332 PM CDT Mon Mar 9 2020 Temperatures start on the cooler side Wednesday morning, but with a shift towards southerly winds and clearing skies expect temperatures to rebound into the upper 40s to lower 60s. Another system moves through Thursday morning, leading to another shot of some light precipitation and cooler temperatures. Mostly in the form of rain, the forcing is currently focused along and east of I-29 as that is where the cold front intercepts the low level moisture. High temperatures have trended lower on Thursday, but the current blend seems reasonable so currently expecting highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Dry conditions are expected on Friday, but with the northwesterly winds continuing the temperatures won't have the chance to warm up much higher than upper 40s. Models continue to show chances for precipitation across the area this weekend, however they are not in agreement on timing or placement so that'll be something to look out for. Cooler temperatures around normal are expect to continue throughout the weekend, with a slightly more active pattern shaping up for next week. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1249 PM CDT Mon Mar 9 2020 Areas along and east of a KMML to KFSD to KSUX line will see light wintry mix through the afternoon, with widespread RA/FZRA in northwest IA and scattered snow/sleet for areas further north toward KFSD.
