.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 343 AM CDT Mon Mar 9 2020

System moving through quickly this morning may bring a short period
of light rain or light snow to a few locations, especially south of
Interstate 90. There are two areas of forcing driving the
precipitation threat. The main area is to the south where a little
weak instability along the forcing of the low level jet will bring
showers into mostly northwest IA. Will need to watch for the
potential for a little mixed precipitation as the LLJ keeps a warm
nose aloft in place as colder surface air races south. Farther north
towards I-90 a little light snow will be possible but amounts will
be minimal. This forcing should exit by late afternoon. The other
area to watch is a lower confidence area in central NE and central SD
which will move towards southeast SD and northeast NE this morning
into early afternoon. The bulk of this forcing is related to some
lift and moisture in and around the dendritic layer. The environment
below is not overly supportive so amounts should be light if the
precipitation can hold together.

Lowered highs a bit as upper stream advection of colder air will keep
the low levels on the colder side. This should mean highs in the mid
30s along highway 14 into southwest MN, near 40 along I-90 and in
the lower to mid 40s closer to the Missouri River.

Lowered lows tonight a little as well with light winds and mostly
clear to partly cloudy skies through most of the night. Lows should
mostly be from 20 to 25.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Tuesday into Tuesday night will see the next threat for
precipitation for the area. Once again looking at two main areas of
forcing to support precipitation. The first has trended a bit north
and looks to be mainly north of Highway 14 but could extend south
into this area. This is in response to the upper level wave moving
through and increasing mid level frontal forcing. South of I-90 the
thermal and moisture fields not overly supportive of a band of
precipitation with somewhat dry air and a shallow mid level
dendritic layer. However, from near I-90 and south during the
afternoon and evening some weak instability appears as though it
should allow scattered showers to develop and a walk through the
forecast models indicates a mainly rain shower threat. Rainfall
amounts should be minor with snow amounts near Highway 14 also a
half an inch or less.

Tuesday evening should see the precipitation exit east of I-29 and
bring clearing skies and dry weather into Wednesday. Warmer air will
build in aloft and allow for warmer temperatures during the day
Wednesday, although maybe a little breezy from the south. Highs
likely around 50 in southwest MN and 60 to 65 in south central SD.

On the heels of this warm up will be another shot of colder air and
another chance for light precipitation. This looks like a fast
moving system which should not cause to many concerns. Lowered highs
from guidance on Thursday with all models coming in on the cool side
and supporting highs more in the upper 40s than lower to mid 50s.
This cooler but still above normal pattern continues into Friday
with dry conditions and highs roughly mid 40s to lower 50s.

While the models are not real agreeable for next weekend they are
all hinting at a little bit more of an active pattern. Nothing to
really grab on to but a period to watch out for. Did lower highs on
Saturday as all the models do indicate a cooler easterly regime that
barely supports highs into the mid 30s along and east of I-29. Won;t
go that cold but back off to near 40 in these locations and mid 40s
along the Missouri River.

Rain will move into parts of northwest IA this morning and
possibly mix with some snow late morning into the afternoon.
Farther northwest some light snow may approach I-90 in SD this
morning, then MN this afternoon. IFR and MVFR ceilings will
gradually improve into the afternoon with most locations VFR by
22z to 01z this afternoon/evening.
