Shortwave energy beginning to move into the Tri-State area mid-
afternoon. Two areas of precipitation have been common this
afternoon, one narrow band associated with a subtle 700mb
deformation axis, and second more synoptically driven area of
precipitation forming over the eastern Nebraska and Northwest Iowa.

Though the afternoon and into the evening we'll begin to see
increasing snow across northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota as
stronger mid-level dynamics move through the area and omega intensifies
within the DGZ. Precipitation on the NW edge of this system
should begin to fade once dynamics refocus further southeast.
Minimal changes in QPF with the system, but have dropped SLR
slightly. This will still represent average accumulations of 1-3"
across the forecast area into this evening. Nevertheless, with
winds remaining light through the event, and this a fairly typical
mid- winter light snow, will not issue an advisory at this time.

Subsidence behind the shortwave should push eastward after 03Z this
evening, bringing an end to the precipitation. Clouds may keep
temperatures up slightly overnight, but lows in the teens are still
likely.

Southerly winds and warm advection will lead to a much warmer
Monday.  New snow cover and clouds may limit the warmth slightly,
but still anticipating temperatures reaching towards the 30 degree
mark.

.LONG TERM...(Monday Evening through Sunday)
Issued at 316 PM CST Sun Jan 12 2020

Warm advection will be caused by yet another positively tilted upper
trough moving through the Northern Plains Monday night.  Latest
model trends continue to push support for precipitation just east of
the forecast area. Will maintain a lower PoPs east of I-29, with low
qpf.  Some concerns for the potential of drizzle prior to the
passage of the 850 mb trough axis overnight, but feel this threat is
too low to mention at this time.  One thing more certain is that a
channel of stronger winds will develop late Monday night into
Tuesday morning behind the departing wave.  Soundings showing winds
at the top of the mixed player pushing 40 knots, which may result in
gusts approaching 35 mph. Have increased winds from the blended
data, and this may need to be looked at further.

Tuesday-Tuesday night: High pressure drains southward on Tuesday
leading to a very chilly day across the region. Winds will remain
light.  However yet another progressive shortwave moves through the
region Tuesday  night.  Moisture is limited, but could see a very
minor accumulation of snow cold air again surges southeast.

Wednesday: Very cold air arrives on Wednesday but there are subtle
differences between medium range models on the timing. GFS is
much faster than the EC, which suggests highs still reach into the
teens. The colder GFS pushes the arctic surge southeast much
faster. The Canadian is a compromise solution.

Thursday-Friday: All eyes are focused on a potential more impactful
system moving through the central US at the end of the week.  There
remain some differences within model guidance, mostly in the form of
temperatures.  The GFS remains a cold outlier compared to both the
cluster of deterministic guidance as well as the GEFS plumes.  Most
guidance does show cold temperatures lingering through Thursday.
Higher confidence on strong warm advection precipitation
developing ahead of an inverted trough late Thursday night into
Friday morning. Certainly much to work out in the details, but
looks like a decent risk for accumulating snows.

Saturday-Sunday: Strong northwest flow develops behind the upper
trough Friday night.  Given fresh snow, there will be some concerns
for blowing snow.  More concerning is the potential for some very
cold temperature into and through the upcoming weekend. Arctic air
drops southward Saturday, with some models hinting at the core of
the pressure ridge settling over the CWA.  Model blends may be a bit
too warm at this point, especially with the potential for fresh
snow.  That said, there is still plenty of time for change and trend
watching but it's possible we fail to see temperatures above zero
for a couple days.
