.SYNOPSIS...Windy and rainy conditions will continue into tonight,
with significant snowfall expected for higher elevations of
northern Trinity County through Saturday morning. A few
thunderstorms will also be possible along the coast through early
Saturday morning. Dry weather returns Saturday afternoon,
followed by another chance for rain later Sunday in the southern
portions of the forecast area.
&&
.DISCUSSION...The forecast remains largely on track this afternoon
as a strong front brings active Christmas Day weather including
widespread rain, gusty winds, and interior mountain snow to
northwest California. Stronger southerly winds aloft have been able
to efficiently mix down to the surface throughout the day, with
gusts in the 45-50 mph range along the coastal plain and even some
isolated gusts as high as 70-80 mph on the ridges. A Wind Advisory
thus remains in effect through early this evening across Del Norte
and Humboldt Counties, with gusty winds likely to continue well into
the overnight hours even as they drop below advisory criteria.
Precipitation will become more convective in nature this evening as
colder air starts to move in aloft with the arrival of the upper
trough. In addition to increased precipitation rates, this will also
bring the chance for a few rumbles of thunder along the North Coast
through early Saturday morning, as evidenced by a handful of
lighting strikes being observed offshore this afternoon. Small hail
may be embedded in some of the heavier showers tonight, although
relatively high snow levels at the coast still look to preclude a
more widespread small hail threat.
Meanwhile, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through
Saturday morning in northern Trinity County. Reports and
observations from around the area suggest that the snow level has
settled in between 2500 and 3000 ft this afternoon, with the bulk of
the accumulation coming above 3500 ft and more of a slushy mix with
minor amounts thus far at lower elevations. The gradual transition
to a more showery regime this evening could help to increase
precipitation rates and bring a little more accumulating snow to
locations between 2500 and 3500 ft into tonight.
Showers will diminish markedly in intensity by late Saturday
morning, although some light precipitation could linger well into
the afternoon across the northern half of the area before shortwave
ridging begins to build in behind the departing trough. This will
likely result in some chilly temperatures for Sunday morning, with
lows along the North Coast possibly dipping into the low/mid 30s
depending upon the degree of clearing overnight. Another trough
digging along the West Coast still looks to provide primarily a
glancing blow for NW CA as it moves across the central CA coast,
bringing another round of welcome rain to southern Mendocino and
Lake Counties Sunday evening into Monday morning while the rest of
the area remains dry. Thereafter, it appears another period of
shortwave ridging will bring dry weather early in the week before
another system brings increasing chances for precipitation mid to

.AVIATION...Gusty south winds and rain have prevailed at the
northcoast terminals. IFR conditions at KCEC may improve to MVFR if
visibility improves. KACV maintains VFR presently with southerly
winds and gusts varying 20 to 30kt. Thunderstorms are also possible
as radar shows convective returns in the northern portion of the
CWA. The presence of low level wind shear not only causes issues
for flight operations but also enhances probability of the
previously mentioned thunderstorms. Model guidance shows gusts
lasting overnight into Saturday which may keep the LLWS hazard as
a concern for the TAF period and through the evening. /EYS

.MARINE...Southerly winds and gusts peak today with Storm intensity
offshore in the Northern outer waters. Winds will maintain at least
Gale criteria until late afternoon for all waters. Steep seas from
swell and local wind driven waves will further the hazardous sea
state. A line of thunderstorms, detected via Radar, may also
increase potential for lightning, wind gusts, and waterspouts. Winds
will ease starting late this afternoon and become westerly briefly
on Saturday. Southerlies will quickly return again Saturday night
and increase slightly to mostly moderate to fresh breezes as a storm
system moves southward off the coast. A series of storm systems
await the North Coast in lieu of Christmas. Saturday will see the
return of southerlies and a large northwest swell and Tuesday
