AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Windy and rainy conditions will spread across the
area on Friday, with significant snow accumulations possible for
portions of Trinity County. A few thunderstorms are possible
along the North Coast Friday night into Saturday morning. Dry
weather returns Saturday afternoon, followed by additional rain
chances later Sunday in the southern portions of the forecast
area.

.DISCUSSION...A weak disturbance embedded in southwest flow aloft is
helping to spread high clouds across northwest California this
afternoon ahead of a deeper upper level trough set to bring
unsettled weather to the region on Christmas Day. Timing with this
system appears to be on track as a front arrives at the coast Friday
morning accompanied by moderate rain and strong southerly winds on
coastal ridges. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for portions of
Humboldt County above 1500 feet through early Friday evening.
Expecting gusty winds to also mix down to the coastal plain during
the morning into early afternoon. These winds are expected to remain
just below advisory criteria for now, but may need to revisit that
potential with subsequent model runs, particularly along the Del
Norte Coast. In terms of rain, still generally expecting a rather
uniform and mainly beneficial 1 to 1.5 inches across the area from
north to south through Saturday morning, with the Humboldt Bay area
staying towards the lower end of the spectrum due to downsloping
effects. Cannot rule out a few rumbles of thunder along the North
Coast Friday night into Saturday morning as the core of the trough
moves overhead accompanied by colder air aloft. This will also bring
some potential for small hail in heavier showers, although snow
levels along the coast may remain a bit too high for this to be a
more widespread concern.

The most challenging forecast question continues to revolve
around snow levels and amounts in northern Trinity County, where
precipitation rates and upslope induced dynamic cooling will present
a complex winter weather scenario. Still expecting the bulk of the
accumulations to remain above 3500 feet, including upwards of a foot
or more at Scott Mountain Summit through early Saturday morning. It
appears Weaverville and other population centers will mostly see
rain perhaps mixed with wet snow at times, but temperatures should
be just warm enough to keep accumulations to a minimum. Will need to
continue to monitor the potential for more significant accumulations
as low as 2500 feet, including parts of the Hwy 3 corridor and
Buckhorn Summit and Oregon Mountain on Hwy 299.

Light showers will linger across the northern half of the area into
Saturday afternoon, but conditions will generally improve through
the day as shortwave ridging moves overhead. Could see some chilly
temperatures on Sunday morning with partial clearing as a result.
The next system will brush the area late Sunday as another trough
digs over the central CA coast. Any rain with this system currently
looks to be mostly confined to Lake and Mendocino Counties. /CB

.AVIATION...VFR conditions have prevailed through the morning and
afternoon ahead of the impending storm system. An increase in mid to
high clouds is expected with rain and gusty winds over the next 24
hours. Rain at the coastal terminals could arrive early Christmas
morning with overcast and MVFR to IFR conditions. Intensifying
southerly winds and gusts ahead of the storm system will build in
tonight. Intermittently throughout the day, Low level wind shear is
a matter of concern as winds will vary from the surface to cloud
level. LLWS will be more probable as winds build in tonight through
Christmas day. /EYS

.MARINE...Southerly winds are forecast to increase over outer
waters later today. Resultant steep southerly seas will build to
small craft advisory levels tonight. Southerlies will strengthen
tonight with a corresponding increase in short period steep
southerly waves. A gale is expected for the outer waters tonight
and Friday, with south winds from 30-40kt and seas from 15 to 20
feet. Winds may also gusts to 40 knots or so around the wind prone
areas such as Pt St George and Cape Mendocino for an hour or two
right before and during frontal passage. A large steep westerly
swell will build on Saturday in the wake of the front. Seas will
likely remain elevated and hazardous over the weekend as another
