.SYNOPSIS...Tonight will be dry with only patchy coastal clouds
developing. Another weak front will bring increasing clouds and
some showers north of Cape Mendocino later Friday and Friday
night. A strong ridge of high pressure will result in building
inland heat and fire weather concerns this weekend, with very
warm temperatures extending to the coast early next week.

.DISCUSSION...In the wake of last night's cold front, showers
tapered off fairly quickly this morning, with just a few lingering
over the mountainous terrain of interior Humboldt, Del Norte, and
northwestern Trinity Counties. Cumulus has lingered there this
afternoon with daytime heating, but elsewhere skies have cleared,
with just some localized patches of marine stratus. This stratus
may try to expand a bit overnight, but light offshore winds may
limit development, allowing for some partial sunshine for the
coast tomorrow morning. However, a weak cold front will approach
from the northwest, with increasing clouds and some showers
pushing onshore over Del Norte and northern Humboldt County by the
late afternoon and evening hours. Rainfall amounts with this front
might reach from a tenth to a half inch north of Trinidad, with
amounts dropping off quickly to the south and east. Showers should
taper off by Saturday morning.
All our attention will then shift toward hot temperatures and fire
weather concerns as we head through the weekend into early next
week. Surface high pressure will build across the Pacific
Northwest through the weekend, while a strong upper-level ridge
shifts eastward from the Pacific toward the West Coast. Meanwhile
a thermal trough will develop toward the coast. This pattern will
favor a shot of northerly winds pushing down the northern
Sacramento Valley and out across the North Bay Hills on Saturday
night, which will likely clip Lake County. As the flow continues
to veer to a more easterly direction on Sunday, some gusty winds
will expand northward across our interior ridgetops, carrying
increasingly dry air through Monday morning. Winds will then ease
off on Monday, as the thermal trough pushes offshore. 100 degree
temperatures are likely for many of the interior valleys as the
heat peaks on Monday and Tuesday, and some spots may approach that
on Sunday as well. The daily record high of 104 in Ukiah on
Monday may be in jeopardy.
While this hot, dry, and locally breezy weather will likely result
in more active fires and an increased potential for new fire
starts, the temperatures and winds will not be extreme like the
event earlier this month. Light offshore flow Monday and Tuesday
may push any smoke back toward the west, perhaps affecting some
coastal areas. Temperatures along the coast may push 80 degrees in
some spots Monday or Tuesday. Winds will likely begin to turn back
onshore mid to late week, with gradually lowering temperatures,
especially near the coast. However, inland temperatures may remain
above normal with dry weather continuing through next weekend. The
blocking upper level ridge may break down or shift eastward around
the first full week of October, but confidence in any rain or
substantially cooler temperatures is low at this time. /AAD

.AVIATION...Clouds have generally decreased across the area today,
with just some scattered to occasionally broken cumulus cloud across
the N interior and some patches of low clouds along portions of the
coast. Interior clouds should gradually wane overnight, but MVFR
conditions in low clouds and local fog can be expected along the
coast. /SEC

.MARINE...Winds are presently light across the area. Large W to NW
swell will be peaking in height this evening, then gradually
subsiding on Friday. Winds will become southerly again later
tonight and on Friday in advance of another, weaker frontal system.
Near gale force northerly winds will be possible this weekend,
primarily over the outer waters and the normally wind prone areas
across the inner waters such as downwind of Cape Mendocino and
around Pt St George. /SEC

.BEACH HAZARDS...The large, early season swell will be peaking in
height this evening with surf heights up to 18 feet along W and NW
facing beaches. The waves may have more run-up than normal due the
summer beach bathymetry. Have continued the Beach Hazards Statement
addressing this as well as shoaling potential. Surf will gradually
subside on Friday. /SEC

.FIRE WEATHER...While some light rain will give a tenth to a
quarter inch to northern Humboldt and Del Norte later Friday and
Friday night, the focus will be on increasingly hot and dry
weather later this weekend and early next week. A push of dry
northerly winds will spread down the northern Sacramento Valley as
high pressure builds in from Oregon Saturday night. These winds
may clip portions of Lake County Saturday night. It is now
looking like easterly winds should also develop farther north in
northeast Mendocino, Trinity, and portions of interior Humboldt
county on Sunday, with afternoon humidity dropping into the teens.
The combination of locally gusty ridgetop winds, low humidity,
and dry fuels may result in locally critical fire weather
conditions, mainly across the exposed ridgetops. There is still
some question regarding the strength and coverage of these winds,
but we do not expect this event to be close to the magnitude of
the the fire weather event around September 7th through 9th.
Winds will ease on Monday, but hot and dry conditions will persist
for much of northwest California, with no rain in sight through
the next weekend. /AAD
