AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Des Moines IA Issued by National Weather Service Quad Cities IA IL 1228 PM CDT Wed Oct 14 2020 ...AVIATION UPDATE... .DISCUSSION..(Today through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 333 AM CDT Wed Oct14 2020 Key Messages: 1) Critical fire weather conditions today 2) Turning cooler for the rest of the week 3) Widespread frost/freeze expected across much of the area Thursday night Fire weather: Numerous forecast issues on the table for the next week. First and foremost, critical fire weather conditions are expected today west of Interstate 35. Grasslands and crops in this area are mostly cured, and coupled with a strong northwest wind gusting to 45 mph and afternoon RH values around 25 percent, will result in rapid fire spread Have issued a Red Flag Warning for this afternoon and early evening, along and west of a line from Algona, to Fort Dodge and Atlantic, where the most extreme conditions exist. Elsewhere across the forecast area, conditions will not be as critical due to lesser curing of grasslands, but cured crops will still be very susceptible to rapid fire spread. Temperatures: Looking ahead, colder air will overspread the region tonight into Thursday, and persist for much of the period. The exception will be a brief temp rebound on Saturday. Widespread frost is expected Thursday night, with low in the upper 20s to low 30s. Sunday and Monday look to be the coldest days of the periods, with highs mainly in the 40s and lows in the 20s to low 30s. Precipitation: Cannot completely discount a few sprinkles or a stray shower this afternoon/tonight with the fropa, but will leave to later shifts to re-assess for potential low pops. For Friday night/Saturday, a weak wave will skirt northern Iowa, with potential for some light rain and perhaps some snowflakes mixed in. Will also carry low chance pops from Saturday night through Monday, although there is still considerable model uncertainty in this period. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday Afternoon) ISSUED AT 1227 PM CDT Wed Oct 14 2020 Strong winds will continue this afternoon through much of tonight as a series of cold fronts move through the area. West to southwest winds from 15 to 25 mph, ahead of an initial cold front that was moving through northwest Iowa at noon, will veer to the west-northwest and increase to 20 to 30 kts as the front moves through central Iowa this afternoon. Some gusts as high as 35 kts will be possible late afternoon and evening, especially at the MCW terminal. A secondary cold front will veer winds to northwest and bring a secondary surge of strong gusty winds through northern Iowa this evening. There is a low potential for light showers or sprinkles with this front this evening, otherwise, there will be high cloud bases and continued VFR conditions.
