.SYNOPSIS...
Moisture will increase across the area as a low pressure system
approaches from the Lower Mississippi Valley. A cold front will
move through the region this evening. Showers and thunderstorms
will occur along and ahead of the front. The thunderstorms
could be severe. Rain chances will diminish late tonight as the
system moves away from the region with dry high pressure
expected for Saturday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Widespread light rain early this morning across the area due to
warm advection/isentropic lift along with weak short wave
trough. Bulk of precipitation may move to the north by daybreak.
Highly amplified upper trough over the southern Plains will be
moving east into the Mississippi Valley today as very pronounced
mid level speed max moves into the trough base. Surface low
deepening over Tennessee. Water vapor showing moisture
spreading northeast ahead of the trough into the Gulf Coast
states and Tennessee Valley along surface frontal boundary. This
deep moisture/higher theta-e air will spread into the Carolinas
and Georgia through the day. Precipitable water may approach 2
inches.
The surface low will track to the northeast and the cold front
will approach the region late this afternoon. The air mass is
likely to be marginally unstable with surface based CAPE around
500 J/kg. Any breaks in the clouds could result in stronger
instability. Of concern is the strength of the low-level jet.
Models suggest 60kt at 850mb southwest moisture transport. The
Deep layer effective shear mean around 50-60kt. Stronger SR
0-1km helicity appears to be across the Upstate but generally
200-300 m2/s2 suggesting weak tornado threat. High resolution
models are consistent with a well defined squall line this
afternoon and early evening. Trends appear possibly a little
faster. High shear/low CAPE scenario. Severe thunderstorms are
expected to spread from the northeast Gulf coast region to South
Carolina by the afternoon. Damaging winds main threat but a few
tornadoes possible both discrete cells ahead of the line and
along the QLCS. Max temps in the low to mid 70s this afternoon.
Given the strength of the low level jet...potential mixing will
result in gusty winds ahead of the front. Expect gusts to around
35 mph. Will post lake wind advisory.
Flooding concern...flash flood watch in effect. Threat may be
greatest in the SC Piedmont and west Midlands where Flash flood
guidance lower but general 2-3 inches rain with locally higher
amounts across region.
Cold front moves through around midnight with showers
diminishing. Cold advection slow to develop and winds may
diminish for a bit. Guidance temps in the mid to upper 40s near
50.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
By Friday, the area of low pressure and associated cold front
will be moving farther away from the region. Much drier air
will be filtering in from the west. The storm system will
continue to deepen as it moves northeast. This will produce a
tight pressure gradient across the region during the day on
Friday, then weakening Friday night. Model soundings indicate a
strong mixing will occur behind the system on Friday producing
breezy to windy conditions across the Midlands and Central
Savannah River Area. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect until
early Friday evening. Winds will be sustained from the
west/west-southwest at 20 to 30 mph with frequent gusts around
35 mph.
High pressure will build into the region Friday night into early
Saturday bringing fair conditions and seasonable temperatures to
the region. An upper level disturbance will cross the region
Saturday afternoon. Moisture will be limited, but there will be
a small chance of a few showers, especially across the northern
Midlands. Temperatures will be slightly below normal with
readings in the lower 50s northern Midlands to upper 50s across
the eastern Midlands and CSRA.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A fast moving upper trough will exit the region late Saturday
night across The Midlands and CSRA and will continue with a
slight chance of a shower.
High pressure over the Tennessee Valley will build eastward into
the the Mid Atlantic States Sunday through early Monday.
However, the pattern will once again become quite active across
the Carolinas and Georgia beginning Monday night into the middle
of next week. A slow moving frontal boundary will approach the
region. This will bring the chance for additional showers, along
with the possibility of thunderstorms on Tuesday. Winds will
shift to the southeast and south bringing warmer and more moist
air int the region. Temperatures will be on the rise into next
week with afternoon highs rising into the 60s/lower 70s and
overnight lows in the 50s.

.AVIATION /08Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Expect deteriorating conditions to MVFR to IFR tonight and
Thursday morning, with a line of severe thunderstorms possible
Thursday afternoon.
A series of short wave troughs will rotate through the area
today ahead of highly amplified upper trough over the lower
Mississippi Valley late in the day will provide strong synoptic
lift across the area. Moisture spreading northeast across the
region this morning which will result in ceiling restrictions at
times possibly to IFR through mid morning. Visibilities reduced
at times in heavier showers.
With deepening surface lower over the Mississippi Valley moving
northeast toward the Appalachians, warm advection and moisture
flux will increase through the afternoon with resulting
widespread showers. The air mass is expected to become
marginally unstable. With very strong deep layer shear, there is
potential for severe thunderstorms across the area mainly
between 18z and 03z. High resolution models suggest a squall
line with potential damaging winds this afternoon.
Ceilings may improve later this morning to VFR but restrictions
this afternoon associated with strong convection. With heavy
rain possible visibilities lower than 2 miles at times. Winds
will become strong south to southwest 15 to 25 knots with gusts
to 30 knots. Low level wind shear due to 40 to 50 knot low level
southwest jet.
EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...Lingering light to moderate rain
showers Thursday night, along with MVFR to IFR conditions
expected, and breezy. VFR Friday, but windy. No significant

A strong cold front will cross the area Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms ahead of the front. Heavy rainfall with localized flooding may occur.
