.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure exits out to sea this evening but will
maintain dry weather for most of the night. A significant storm
system will then bring a soaking rain on Christmas Eve, along with
warm and breezy conditions. A powerful cold front will cross the
area Christmas Eve night, with rain changing over to an accumulating
snow from west to east. This will be accompanied by a much colder
airmass, with potentially heavy lake effect snow east and northeast
of Lakes Erie and Ontario for Christmas Day into the holiday weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Dry and quite weather late this afternoon thanks to sfc high along
the Mid-Atlantic. Highs will peak in the 30s to low 40s.

Sfc high along the Mid-Atlantic will maintain dry weather as it exits
out to sea early this evening.

Breezy and dry for the first half of the night. Low pressure over
the upper Mississippi Valley then sends its cold front towards
the lower lakes for the second half. Deep moisture streaming
northward and large scale ascent will then lead to increasing
chances for rain as we head towards daybreak Thursday.
Temperatures wise, we may see a brief dip from daytime highs,
but will then slowly rise through the overnight with
temperatures ranging from the upper 30s to mid 40s by early
Thursday morning.

Anticipating a wet and soggy day Thursday as a steady stream of
moisture lifts up along and ahead of the front as it slowly
moves east into the Lower Lakes. While this occurs, a potent
shortwave rounding the base of the mid-level trough will aid in
a secondary low developing along the front. It is this low,
although the track is not quite narrowed down, that will
"potentially" bring some accumulating snows as it tracks across
the region through Friday. More on that in the short term
disco...

Otherwise, outside of the rain, it will be a mild and breezy
day with wind gusts potentially gusting as high as 35 mph. With
the region firmly in the warm sector, +4 to +5C at H850, highs
should climb into the 40s to even low 50s in some locations.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT/...
The surface low tracking across Ontario Thursday night will
drag a cold front into western New York late Thursday night.
Falling temperatures could lead to untreated roads icing over
and becoming slippery. The temperatures drop will also lead to a
rapid change over to snow across western New York as cold air
blasts into the region from the west with 850 mb temperatures
plunging to near -12C by 12z Friday. Model trends have been to
slow the arrival of the cold front just a bit as a ripple
develops along it. In addition, models are bringing in some
drier air (likely caused by subsidence on the western side of
the deepening area of low pressure). This, along with the small
arrival delay of the cold air may hold snow accumulations
Thursday night, giving some uncertainty to this part of the
forecast, but still believe most of western New York will see at
least some accumulating snow (probably in the 1-4" range) by
Christmas morning, with the better chance for the higher end
amounts focused across Chautauqua county which will be in the
cold air the longest.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
...Heavy Lake Effect Snow Possible Christmas through December
26...

For Friday morning, there should be a brief transition from
ending synoptic snow moving into Central NY and developing lake
effect snow developing on a WSW flow over the lakes. The coldest
aloft will still be upstream and poised to move overhead later
Friday afternoon. So there may be a period Friday morning with a
meager lake response before a full-blown lake response takes
hold. As a result, there's still quite a bit of uncertainty to
both the start time and placement of lake effect snow.

East of Lake Erie...some models move the band well into the
Northtowns while others place it toward Metro Buffalo Friday
afternoon. Regardless, the coldest airmass should pass overhead
Friday evening and mark the period for the heaviest and most intense
lake effect snow, where 2"/hr and thundersnow will be a possibility
into Friday night as the band settles a little to the south
overnight.

East of Lake Ontario...a similar transition period is expected, with
widespread snow tapering off Friday morning...followed with a lake
response Friday afternoon. The most intense period should be Friday
night and well into Saturday.  Similar to Lake Erie however, there's
still uncertainty placement at this point through Saturday.  The
best chance will probably be over/north of the Tug Hill Plateau.
Then another shortwave trough will move across the St Lawrence
valley and should push the band south over and eventually south of
the Tug Hill Plateau.

With concerns noted above, the watch will stand for now until
there's more confidence in timing and placement along with
corresponding snow amounts.

Lighter lake snows will linger into Sunday and eventually fall
apart as warm advection ahead of the next system to affect the
area turns flow southerly and warms temperatures into the start
of next week. Long range guidance in fairly good agreement on a
shortwave trough rounding the base of the Northern Stream on
Monday. The associated cold front crosses the Great Lakes region
during the day Monday, leading to snow shower chances across
the area. Daytime heating on Monday may raise temperatures
enough for some rain to mix in with the snow, but should be all
snow again by Monday evening. The large scale system pushes out
of the area by Tuesday morning, but much cooler air ushering in
behind the front may lead to some lake effect snow for Tuesday.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR with no issues anticipated the rest of the afternoon hours and
as we head into this evening.

Attention then turns to a potent 45 to 50 knot LLJ entering the
region associated with a deepening low over upper Mississippi River
Valley. LLWS will be possible between 03Z-12Z across area terminals
overnight. While VFR conditions will likely be maintain through the
first half of the night, lowering CIGS and deteriorating conditions
will occur as we head towards daybreak Thursday.

Thursday, MVFR to IFR conditons can be anticipated as widespread
rain overspread area terminals.

Outlook...
Thursday night...rain changes over to snow across far Western NY
with MVFR/IFR likely.
Friday and Saturday...MVFR with IFR possible in lake effect snows.
Sunday...MVFR with chance of snow showers.

.MARINE...
Surface ridge will move east of the area with light winds and
minimal wave actions through this evening.

A strengthening storm system will move into the upper Great Lakes
this evening. A tightening pressure gradient between these two
features will then provide strong enough southerlies to produce our
next round of Small Craft Advisory conditions by this evening
through the day on Thursday, mainly for winds due to the offshore
wind component.
