.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure builds in overnight with dry and milder,
but breezy conditions for Wednesday. A significant storm system
will bring a soaking rain on Christmas Eve, along with warm and
breezy conditions. A powerful cold front will cross the area
Christmas Eve night, with rain changing over to an accumulating
snow from west to east. This will be accompanied by a much
colder airmass, with potentially heavy lake effect snow east and
northeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario for Christmas Day into the
holiday weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Overnight, surface high pressure over the lower Ohio Valley builds
into the lower Great Lakes. Dry weather will ensue, but low level
moisture will likely maintain a low stratus deck south and southeast
of the Lakes. Some clearing will remain east of Lake Ontario
overnight where temperatures will be colder than surrounding
locations. Lows anticipated mainly in the mid and upper 20s, east of
Lake Ontario mid and upper teens.
Wednesday, surface high moves east to the Mid Atlantic region.
Meanwhile, the storm system for the tail end of the week deepens and
heads towards the upper Great Lakes. In between these two features,
breezy and mild conditions will develop as warm advection processes
take over across the lower Great Lakes. It appears that a fair
amount of mid and upper level clouds will stream into the region
limiting diurnal mixing and insolation. This will limit how warm we
could potentially get across the area. With that said, highs will
range from upper 30s to mid 40s across lower elevations, with low to
mid 30s inland.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
More active pattern develops this period as the upstream shortwave
trough amplifies into the western Great Lakes and takes on a
negative tilt, with attending surface low pressure deepening
near western Lake Superior taking aim into Ontario by Thursday
evening. The entirety of western and north central New York will
be fully engulfed in the warm sector with an axis of +4C to +5C
850 mb air nosing up into the region, while plume of warm
conveyor belt driven precipitation expands up into the region.
Thus, a soaking rain is anticipated through the day Thursday.
Overall rainfall totals look to be in the half to one inch
range, although there could be some locally higher totals.
The surface low tracking across Ontario Thursday night will drag a
cold front into western New York late Thursday night. Falling
temperatures could lead to untreated roads icing over and becoming
slippery. The temperatures drop will also lead to a rapid change
over to snow across western New York as cold air blasts into
the region from the west with 850 mb temperatures plunging to
near -12C by 12z Friday. Model trends have been to slow the
arrival of the cold front just a bit as a ripple develops along
it. In addition, models are bringing in some drier air (likely
caused by subsidence on the western side of the deepening area
of low pressure). This, along with the small arrival delay of
the cold air may hold snow accumulations Thursday night, giving
some uncertainty to this part of the forecast, but still believe
most of western New York will see at least some accumulating
snow (probably in the 1-4" range) by Christmas morning, with the
better chance for the higher end amounts focused across
Chautauqua county which will be in the cold air the longest.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
...Heavy Lake Effect Snow Possible Christmas through December
26...
The aforementioned system will start to rapidly wrap colder air into
the area as the increasingly-curved upper jet structure advances
northward through the area on Thursday night. This will allow the
above mentioned 2nd low to move NNE across Western PA and somewhere
Western NY Thursday night. As this moves in, cold air wraps around
this feature and will quickly change any rain to snow from west to
east. But it should also bring in some dry air aloft and limit the
duration of a heavy wet synoptic snow event. Thus have dropped snow
amounts by a few inches for Thursday night. Most areas should see 1-
4".
Although these amounts are not impressive, the snow may be rather
"wet" and at least briefly heavy. This, together with rapidly
dropping temperatures, may result in a flash freeze (normally an
issue for clearing sky conditions). But any untreated roads that do
not effectively get covered may have freeze-over issues.
For Friday morning, there should be a brief transition from ending
synoptic snow moving into Central NY and developing lake effect snow
developing on a WSW flow over the lakes. The coldest aloft will
still be upstream and poised to move overhead later Friday
afternoon. So there may be a period Friday morning with a meager
lake response before a full-blown lake response takes hold. As a
result, there's still quite a bit of uncertainty to both the start
time and placement of lake effect snow.
East of Lake Erie...some models move the band well into the
Northtowns while others place it toward Metro Buffalo Friday
afternoon. Regardless, the coldest airmass should pass overhead
Friday evening and mark the period for the heaviest and most intense
lake effect snow, where 2"/hr and thundersnow will be a possibility
into Friday night as the band settles a little to the south
overnight.
East of Lake Ontario...a similar transition period is expected, with
widespread snow tapering off Friday morning...followed with a lake
response Friday afternoon. The most intense period should be Friday
night and well into Saturday. Similar to Lake Erie however, there's
still uncertainty placement at this point through Saturday. The
best chance will probably be over/north of the Tug Hill Plateau.
Then another shortwave trough will move across the St Lawrence
valley and should push the band south over and eventually south of
the Tug Hill Plateau.
With concerns noted above, the watch will stand for now until
there's more confidence in timing and placement along with
corresponding snow amounts.
In summary, the synoptic snow should yield 1-4" sloppy heavy snow
for nearly all of WNY, followed by a break or decrease, then
localized lake effect develops. There's high confidence for lake
effect downwind of both lakes, but details still need to be ironed
out.
Lighter lake snows will linger into Sunday and eventually fall apart
as warm advection ahead of the next system to affect the area turns
flow southerly and warms temperatures into the start of next week.
Long range guidance in fairly good agreement on a shortwave trough
rounding the base of the Northern Stream on Monday. The associated
cold front crosses the Great Lakes region during the day Monday,
leading to snow shower chances across the area. Daytime heating on
Monday may raise temperatures enough for some rain to mix in with
the snow, but should be all snow again by Monday evening. The large
scale system pushes out of the area by Tuesday morning, but much
cooler air ushering in behind the front may lead to some lake effect
snow for Tuesday.

higher end MVFR to low end VFR CIGS across area terminals south
and southeast of the Lakes through the remainder of the
overnight. Expect VFR for KART. VFR flight conditions should
develop across most terminals heading into the early morning
hours, with higher terrain last to come up as is usually the
case.
Wednesday, surface high pressure will provide VFR conditions for
Wednesday through Wednesday evening. That said, there will be a good
deal of mid and high clouds moving across the region. Winds will
come up later in the day into the evening, with gusts in the 20-25kt
range.
Outlook...
Thursday...MVFR in rain. LLWS likely.
Friday and Saturday...MVFR with IFR possible in lake effect snows.
Sunday...MVFR with chance of snow showers.

Surface high pressure over the lower Ohio Valley will continue to
build into the lower Great Lakes overnight. Pressure gradient across
the Lakes has relaxed a good deal, with lingering Small Craft
conditions only left in effect across the eastern half of Lake
Ontario. These should expire around 09Z.
Wednesday, surface ridge will move overhead allowing for lighter
winds and wave action to continue on both Lakes through the early
afternoon. Later Wednesday into Wednesday night, a strengthening
storm system will move across the upper Great Lakes which will
likely produce another round of Small Craft conditions.
