.SYNOPSIS...

Low pressure will push off the mid Atlantic today, passing well
south of Long Island. This will bring an area of rain and
drizzle across the region, with some snow initially across the
higher inland terrain. Any precipitation tapers off this evening
and tonight as the low exits. High pressure returns Thursday
followed by a fast moving low pressure tracking south of New
England Friday. Another storm approaching from the Great Lakes
will bring rain Saturday night into Sunday. Scattered showers
and near seasonable conditions follow for early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

Highlights

* Cloudy day with a coastal storm remaining south of the region
  today. Best shot for rain is south of the Mass Pike. North of the
  Mass Pike it will remain cloudy and suspect there will be some
  drizzle.

Will remain cloudy across much of southern New England today. Early
this morning there is stratocumulus advecting in from the ocean. In
addition mid to high clouds are increasing as a negatively tilted
trough lifts into the Mid Atlantic this morning. A coastal low will
be developing across eastern Virginia/North Carolina in response to
the trough. The trough will lift into southern New England by this
evening. The surface low associated with it will remain well
offshore.

Based on the latest guidance have reduced precipitation chances
across southern New England. Suspect these chances will need to be
reduced further based on where the low is expected to track and per
the latest HREF guidance. Best opportunity for rain will be along
the south coast. Elsewhere there may be some drizzle due to the
increased easterly flow combined with the lift from the trough. Have
reduced QPF values as well. Temperatures will be cold enough at the
onset of any light precipitation that there could be some
flurries/snow across the higher elevations. This should change over
to rain fairly quickly as temperatures warm.

The low will deepen and strengthen as the day progresses. Expect
wind speeds and gusts to increase over the ocean and along coastal
areas throughout the day. High temperatures range from the upper 30s
across the eastern slopes of the Berkshires to the low to mid 40s
elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...

Highlights

* Any precipitation across the interior comes to an end during the
  evening. Expect drizzle/rain to linger across Cape Cod and the
  Islands until late. Gusty winds across coastal areas.

* Dry and quiet weather on Thursday with gusty winds diminishing as
  high pressure builds in.

Tonight...

The trough over southern New England will lift offshore and behind
it a ridge axis will build in. The surface low associated with the
trough will lift toward Nova Scotia. The storm may pass by close
enough to bring some rain to Cape Cod and the Islands. Could see
anywhere from 0.1 to 0.25 inches overnight.

Expect gusty E/NE winds becoming more northerly as the night
progresses. Anticipate the strongest wind gusts over Cape Cod and
the Islands where there could be 25 to 35 mph winds at times.

Low temperatures will fall into the 30s across many locations.
Expect readings in the mid to upper 20s across the higher
elevations.

Thursday...

High pressure builds into the region. This will bring dry and quiet
weather with wind speeds and gusts diminishing as the pressure
gradient relaxes. Temperatures will rebound as winds aloft become
westerly and advect warmer air into the region. Some uncertainty on
temperatures at this point in time as cloud cover may increase
enough during the second half of the day that impacts highs. This is
a result of a shortwave lifting into Quebec. Highs range from the
low 40s to the low 50s.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Big Picture...

Northern and southern streams show on the maps, but it is the
southern stream that affects Southern New England through the long
term period. Upper ridge builds over the Eastern USA while a trough
digs over the Western USA. A shortwave races over the top of the
ridge Thursday night and across New England Friday. The Western
trough ejects northeast, drawing milder air north Saturday night and
then moving across New England early next week.

Mass fields are similar through Sunday, then diverge Sunday night
through Tuesday. Confidence is high Friday-Saturday, falling to
moderate next week.

Daily Concerns...

Thursday night through Saturday...

Weak cold front moves through Thursday night, then stalls south of
the coast. Limited moisture aloft suggests a dry passage. The upper
shortwave mentioned above generates a wave along the stalled front.
The wave passes south of New England on Friday. The left exit region
of the supporting upper jet moves across at that time, generating
lift of about 9 microbars/sec or 30 mb/hr. A 40-50 kt low level jet
feeds north through the Mid Atlantic states late Thursday night and
across Srn New England Friday morning. PW values are limited but
above normal at 0.5 to 0.75 inches. Meanwhile low level temperatures
just above the surface remain several degrees above freezing. This
supports precip as rain. Thursday night dew points will be in the
30s, support low temps no lower than that. Low level temperatures
support Friday high temps in the upper 40s to mid 50s.

The shortwave and surface low move off to the east late Friday
afternoon. North winds behind the low will draw drier air over the
region Friday evening/night. Surface high pressure brings dry
weather for Saturday although with increasing mid and high clouds
late in the day.

Saturday night through Sunday night...

Closed low ejecting from the Southwest USA reaches the Great Lakes.
The primary jet moves up the St Lawrence Valley with 50-60 kt winds.
A secondary low-level jet along the coast brings south-southeast
winds of 40-50 kt as it lifts over the surface layer easterlies.
This brings a period of rain, possibly more like drizzle Saturday
night. Bagginess in the surface flow suggests a coastal low trying
to form near the Srn New England south coast late Sunday. Depending
on how this tracks, there may be a brief period of mild south-
southwest winds Sunday night. Rain then tapers off as the
surface system moves off to the east.

Monday-Tuesday...

Upper low overhead Monday moves east Tuesday. This brings a cold
pool and cold pool moisture. This will generate clouds as well as a
few showers.

.AVIATION /08Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence.

Expect borderline MVFR ceilings as stratocumulus moves onshore.
Ceilings are generally above 3 kft, but there are a few spots
with lower. Light E to NE winds increasing to 10 to 15 kts along
the coast by daybreak.

Wednesday and Wednesday night...Moderate to high confidence.

Expect MVFR ceilings to develop and borderline IFR conditions
during the afternoon. Expect the coastal storm to remain well
south of the region, which should spare may locations any
precipitation. Best shot is across the south coast. Expect there
will be drizzle due to the easterly flow in combination with the
lift associated with the system nearby. This could reduce
visibilities, but did not see any hints at this in the latest
GLAMP or MOS guidance. Held off from visibility reductions at
this point in time. Coastal areas will see gusty east winds
develop later in the day. Winds will shift to the northeast once
the low is southeast of Cape Cod and the Islands. This occurs
roughly between 21-03Z. Any precipitation should come to an end
by 04-06Z.

Lower ceilings and potentially some drizzle could linger across
Cape Cod and the Islands after 06Z. Flow will be northerly with
some moisture within the lower levels.

.MARINE...

A coastal storm will remain well to the south and east of the
region. This will bring some rain today and tonight. There may be
some visibility reductions especially south and closer to Cape Cod
and the Islands this afternoon and early tonight.

Will see increasing easterly winds throughout the day becoming
northeasterly tonight. Gusts of 15 to 20 kts north of Cape Cod.
Gusts of 15 to 20 kts increase to 20 to 30 kts elsewhere by tonight.
Not out of the question that there are occasional gale force gusts
southeast of Nantucket tonight.

Confidence was high enough that due to the combination of winds and
waves have extended the Small Craft Advisory for the outer waters
into Thursday. Interior locations will see Small Craft Conditions
develop this afternoon and evening as winds ramp up. The only
exceptions are across Mass Bay, Boston Harbor and Narragansett Bay.

Today and Tonight...

E winds increasing to 15-25 kt, but will back to NE with gusts
up to 30 kt late in the day. Seas build to 5 to 7 ft across the
southern waters to east of Cape Cod through 00Z Thu. Good
visibility most of the day, but may lower across the islands by
around 00Z in light rain and patchy fog.

Tonight, E-NE winds from 20 to 25 kt, highest across the
southern outer waters, gusting up to around 30 kt. There may be
occasional gale force gusts southeast of Nantucket Seas continue
to build up to 5 to 9 ft, highest on the outer waters.
Visibility 3SM to 5SM across the southern waters through around
midnight then will improve from W-E as the rain moves offshore.
