.SYNOPSIS...
Precipitation ending this morning as a coastal storm exits and
high pressure builds in. Gusty winds gradually diminishing as
the day progresses. Another coastal storm will move across
Wednesday bringing rain, mainly along the south coast. A period
of unsettled weather returns over the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
730 am update...
Rain showers have mostly exited, save for eastern Plymouth
county and Cape Cod this morning. Observations show gusty winds
continuing 25 to 35 knots across the same region which will
continue to diminish through noon as the pressure gradient
slackens. Forecast is on track.
Previous Discussion...
A negatively titled trough will be situated over the Gulf of
Maine early today. The trough will continue lifting
northeastward, which will lift out the coastal storm. A ridge
axis will build into eastern Ontario and Quebec. High pressure
will build into the eastern Great Lakes and New England.
Expect any precipitation to come to an end this morning as the
coastal storm exits. Nudged the forecast toward the latest GFS
guidance as it is performing well on how quickly precipitation is
exiting per observations. Allowed the Winter Storm Warning and
Winter Weather Advisory to expire as precipitation continues to
diminish.
Gusty winds are expected initially due to the tight pressure
gradient from the departing system and the incoming high. Winds will
gradually diminish as the high builds in and relaxes the pressure
gradient. Will take the longest for gusts to diminish across coastal
locations and over the ocean. Expired the Wind Advisory as winds
will remain below Advisory levels.
Cloud cover will increase this afternoon across eastern areas as a
shortwave slides through. Do not anticipate there to be any
precipitation, but there will be enough lift to generate some
cloudiness. High temperatures will top out into the 40s and low 50s,
despite weak cold air advection.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM WEDNESDAY/...
Tonight...
Dry and quiet weather tonight as high pressure builds into northern
New England. As the ridge axis slides to the east, will see winds
shift from northerly cold air advection to southerly warm air
advection. Do anticipate some cold air damming, but not to the same
extent as Sunday into Monday as the surface high is not as strong.
A trough will dig into the Ohio River Valley and Appalachians, which
will begin developing another coastal storm. This will bring
increasing cloud cover as the night progresses. Low temperatures
will be in the mid to upper 20s in the higher elevations. Elsewhere
readings will be in the 30s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...

morning, especially along the south coast
* High temperatures in the 40s and 50s through the weekend
* Slight chance of rain along the south coast Friday, then
widespread rain returns late Saturday into Sunday
Details...
Wednesday and Thursday...
Cloud cover increases Wednesday morning as mid and high level
moisture increases ahead of an approaching shortwave trough. The
trend toward a southward suppression of the sfc reflection mentioned
yesterday has continued with the latest guidance, further limiting
the heavy rainfall potential to the immediate south coast, if that.
With the southward shift in the low track, the plume of moisture,
LLJ, and upper level dynamics have also shifted offshore. This would
place southern New England on the edge of the rain shield; best
chance of 0.25" or more will be Cape Cod and the islands, decreasing
to the north. Additionally, the gustiest winds have trended further
south, limited mainly to the Cape and islands where gusts 25 to 35
mph are possible. Models continue to hint that Nantucket may flirt
with some coastal flooding issues Wednesday night, but chances are
low at the moment. Rain moves into the south coast by late
morning/early afternoon on Wednesday and moves out by mid morning
Thursday.
By then the low moves well to our east and a ridge of high pressure
moves in. Modest warm advection will bring temperatures a bit warmer
than Wednesday, in the upper 40s for most; lower 50s in the CT
Valley. Dry weather and light winds continue under the high
pressure.
Friday...
Friday temperatures continue to warm up...likely the warmest day of
the forecast; in the mid to upper 50s. Southern New England may
thread the needle between a sfc low/shortwave that passes well to
our north and a weak sfc disturbance that crosses near the south
coast. The best chance of seeing some rain showers will be
associated with this southern disturbance bringing a chance of rain
to the south coast. Any rain should be rather quick in and out
during the day on Friday.
Saturday through Monday...
The next chance of widespread rain comes over the weekend as an
expansive shortwave and sfc low pressure moves from the Great Lakes
into northern New England. This produces a secondary low somewhere
over southern New England which strengthens over the Gulf of Maine.
Timing is uncertain, but guidance has been rather consistent in
bringing in rain late in the day on Saturday through most or all of
the day on Sunday. Looking toward the beginning of the work week
high pressure and a drying trend returns.

Ceilings will lift and skies will scatter out. Expect MVFR to
linger the longest across Cape Cod and the Islands due to
northerly flow, which will result in some ocean effect clouds.
Skies will gradually lift and scatter out to VFR as drier air
moves in. Gusty northerly winds across eastern areas gradually
diminishing.
Tonight...Moderate confidence.
Mainly VFR conditions, but could see areas of MVFR CIGS across
the eastern slopes of the Berkshires as well as coastal
terminals late. Another coastal low approaches bringing MVFR
conditions along with light rain and/or snow across western
MA into north central CT toward daybreak Wednesday.

Increased northerly wind speeds and gusts over the ocean based
on observations. Nudged things toward the latest NAMNest and RAP
guidance, which are doing well per comparison to observations.
Adjusted the timing of the Gale Warning to end sooner as winds
will ramp down quickly this morning once the coastal storm
exits and high pressure builds in behind it. A Small Craft
Advisory will be needed due to the combination of winds and
waves. Wave heights gradually diminish as winds decrease.
Precipitation will taper off as the low exits. Any visibility
reductions will improve once precipitation ends. Winds shifting
to the northwest this afternoon/evening.
Next opportunity for potential Gale Force gusts is on Wednesday as
another coastal system passes by to the south. The best chance of
this appears to be across the southern ocean waters at this point in
time, but this will largely depend on how close (or conversely how
far) the storm comes to southern New England.
