.SYNOPSIS...

A warm front will brings some light snow across interior MA/CT
and a light wintry mix near the coast toward daybreak and into
Monday. Another low may bring light accumulating snow for parts
of our area Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Then, a strong
cold front will bring blustery conditions and gale force winds
over the waters Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday. Most
interior locations could see sub freezing highs on Thursday.
The cold will be short lived, however, as a warm front lifts
north on Friday. Saturday highs could be in the 50s, which will
be 15-20 degrees above normal for early January. Widespread rain
also returns late Friday into Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...

1020 PM Update...

Patchy high clouds across central and eastern areas through
around midnight, but the mainly clear skies will be brief. The
next mid level long wave trough slowly lifts NE across the
region overnight, while the associated surface warm front slows
its NE progression.

Temps have fallen to the 20s across inland areas as well as
across portions of SE Mass to the lower Cape at 03Z where winds
were light/variable or calm, ranging to the lower-mid 30s
across portions of the coastal plain. So, with the colder temps
in place, will see patchy light snow push toward the E slopes of
the Berkshires toward daybreak.

Previous Discussion...

Clouds will increase from west to east as a frontal system sets
up across the region. Winds will gradually switch to the
southwest and generally remain light.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...

By daybreak, a weak disturbance slides along the near stationary
front that will be draped across MA, roughly along the MA
turnpike. High res guidance shows scattered light snow showers
throughout the day across interior MA and mix of light rain and
snow showers over southeast MA.

Given there is only a few hundredths of an inch of QPF to work
with, accumulations will be very light with no more than coating
to half an inch, mainly on grassy surfaces. North of the front,
high temperatures could possibly not get above freezing. South
of the front, temperatures could get into the upper 30s and
around 40. Eventually by tomorrow early evening, the stationary
front becomes an occluded front and, with mid-level dry air
moving in, precipitation chances come to an end and winds shift
to the west. There is no real cold air behind the front, however.
With winds staying up, temperatures tomorrow night only fall
into the 20s despite clearing skies.

Quiet weather day on tap for most of Tuesday ahead of our next
precip maker Tuesday night. Clear skies end early as high clouds
stream in after 12Z (7am), after which the atmosphere will
saturate from the top down, with increasing mid level clouds by
afternoon and low level clouds arriving in the evening/early
overnight hours. This on moistening SW flow ahead of the upper
trough approaching from the west, but no precipitation to speak
of during the day. Temperatures will warm a bit on SW flow to
just above average for early January, in the upper 30s (inland)
to low 40s (southeast/coast).

Tuesday night and Wednesday...

** Potential for light accumulating snow, especially over southeast
MA and RI Tue night into early Wed **

Tuesday night, we get our next shot of rain/snow which has the
potential to be impactful for the Wednesday morning commute. At
the upper levels a negatively tilted trough will dip through the
Great Lakes region generating a surface low ahead of it which
will likely pass off the south coast of southern New England,
though the intricacies of the track remain uncertain.

For now the storm system looks to be very progressive and begin
rapid strengthening too far downstream to greatly impact us,
potentially undergoing bombogenesis as it approaches Nova
Scotia/Newfoundland Wed/Thursday. Given fluctuations in
deterministic guidance 60-72 hours out, the forecast is leaning
toward an ensemble solution of up to 1-2 inches of snow out of
this system...mainly for Southeast Massachusetts and into Rhode
Island. With the projected path of the low center, this is where
the best moisture and omega coincide in the -12 to -18C layer
for efficient snow growth. Elsewhere in interior/northwest MA
QPF will be quite limited. At this point we continue to monitor
for potential that this system may bring some travel
difficulties to the Wednesday morning commute in southeast MA
(bulk of the precip falls before 7am). Stay tuned.

Later Wednesday as the low rapidly lifts northeast the bulk of
the precip comes to and end during the morning. The main story
on Wednesday will be very gusty winds resulting from both a
tightening pressure gradient on the back side of the low and CAA
on NW winds efficiently mixing down a 40-50kt LLJ. Winds will
likely gust 30-40 mph, while closer to 50 mph is possible in
spots. A Gale Warning will likely be necessary for the waters,
with potential for a Wind Advisory as well. Overnight temps drop
into the teens on strong CAA with gusty winds bringing single
digit wind chills in the interior.

Thursday...

Dry weather and mostly sunny skies on Thursday under a building
ride and sfc high pressure. Temperatures will be noticeably
colder Thursday under 850mb temps of -10 to -20C, highs staying
sub freezing away from the south coast.

Friday into the Weekend...

High pressure exits on Friday pushed out by an incoming
shortwave. Ahead of said disturbance a warm front lifts north
on Friday bringing precip back to the region, increasing in
coverage through the day. WAA over top of the cold surface air
in place initially could lead to some wintry precipitation in
the form of sleet or freezing rain for the NW interior on the
front end, but confidence is low at this time range. For the
most part this will be a very warm airmass bringing widespread
rain late Friday and Saturday before a cold front moves through
around late Saturday. There is considerable disagreement in the
guidance however as to the evolution of this trough and how
quickly it exits the region so can't rule out rain lingering
into Sunday. Temperature-wise, Saturday is the warmest,
currently looking positively spring like, in the mid 50s or
even warmer! Should that come to pass it would put us 20
degrees or more above average for early January.

Overnight into Monday...Moderate confidence.

VFR conditions through midnight, then CIGS will gradually lower
around 5000 ft across E slopes of the Berkshires by daybreak.
Areas of MVFR CIGS develop after 14Z as area of -SN moves
across W Mass/N central CT terminals, which may mix with -RA
further S. May see a light coating of snow, possibly up to one
inch across portions of the E slopes of the Berkshires. NW
winds around 10-15 kt through midnight, then diminishing.

to around 15 kt by around midnight. After midnight, winds shift
to W at around 10 kt. Seas 4 to 7 ft early, continuing to
subside. Good visibility, though may see patchy light snow
across the waters S of the RI coast by daybreak Monday.

Monday...
Light W-SW winds, increasing to around 15 kt on the southern
waters during the afternoon. Seas 3 to 5 ft, highest on the
southern outer waters. Reduced visibility in patchy light rain.
