.SYNOPSIS...
Patchy light rain and/or snow will push across the region at
times through today. A cold front will shift east, moving
offshore this evening. Another low may bring light accumulating
snow for parts of our area Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.
Then, a strong cold front will bring blustery conditions and
gale force winds over the waters Wednesday afternoon into early
Thursday. Most interior locations could see sub freezing highs
on Thursday. The cold will be short-lived, as a warm front lifts
north on Friday. Saturday highs expected to be 15-20 degrees
above normal for mid January. Widespread rain also expected to
return late Friday into Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1PM Update...
Forecast remains on track with occasional light snow showers
moving into parts of Eastern MA and RI. Temperatures and snow
amounts this afternoon remain consistent with the 10AM update.
A light wintry mix or rain shower along the South Coast and the
Cape where temperatures are in the mid 30s. The snow and rain
showers will continue for much of this afternoon before the
stationary front becomes an occluded front later this evening
and put an end to the precipitation. Winds will generally remain
light from the WSW at 5-10 kts inland and up to 15 kts near the
coast.

Previous discussion...
Forecast is pretty much on track with light snow showers
reaching the ground west of ORH. It will take a couple more
hours to saturate the low-level atmosphere in Eastern MA and RI.
But radar trends suggest that most of Eastern MA should see
nothing more than a few flurries and/or sprinkles. Overall,
expect a coating to half an inch of snow mainly on grassy
surfaces in the interior higher elevations. With such light
precip rate, the snow will be more of a decorative variety, i.e.
making for nice pictures and not much else. Where it is
currently snowing, temperatures are holding steady in the upper
20s. Where it is still dry, it is in the low to mid 30s. With a
near- stationary front draped roughly along the MA turnpike
corridor, temperatures are expected to top out in the mid to
upper 30s south of the MA turnpike and low 30s north of it.

Previous discussion...
Latest surface observations indicated a decent amount of low
level dry air. it will take some time before snow or rain
showers will actually reach the ground this morning. Overall,
forecast remained on track. Only made minor tweaks to reflect
observed trends.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Tonight...

Any leftover light rain and/or snow along the E coast will move
offshore quickly this evening. Skies will become mostly clear
across most of the region by around 10 PM or so, but some clouds
will linger well inland. May see light snow accumulations well
inland, generally an inch or less. There is a low chance of a
bit more snow across portions of the E slopes of the Berkshires.

W winds will become gusty as colder air works in, especially
along the coast. May see gusts up to around 20 kt or so across
the higher inland terrain, and up to 25-30 kt along the
immediate coast, Cape Cod and the islands.

Lows will be mainly in the 20s, except around 30 along the
immediate coast. However, it will feel colder with the blustery
winds, with wind chills in the lower to mid teens across the
interior to the lower 20s along the shore.

Tuesday...

Will see leftover gusty winds Tuesday morning, then should
diminish by around midday.

High pressure will push offshore while another low starts to
develop across the SE states. With a digging mid level trough
starting to set up during the day, will start to see clouds move
in from the SW. However, looks like the leading edge of the
approaching precip will hold off until after dark.

Expect temps to top off in the lower-mid 30s across the higher
terrain, ranging to the lower 40s along the coast.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights...

* Potential for light accumulating snow Tuesday night into
  Wednesday. Greatest risk across southeast MA and RI.
  Confidence remains moderate to low in the details.

* Below normal high temperatures Thursday, with sub-freezing highs
  possible for most interior locations.

* Strong northwest winds Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday
  morning with gale force winds possible over the waters.

* The cold will be short-lived, with a warm front lifting north
  Friday. Rain chances returning Friday into Saturday.

Details...

Tuesday night and Wednesday...

** Potential for light accumulating snow, especially over
 southeast MA and RI **

06/00Z guidance trended into better agreement with the details
regarding a complex system. Expecting a parent low pressure to
remain over Quebec, with a secondary low pressure to develop
towards the Mid Atlantic coast. This leaves southern New England
in between these systems. Thinking now the initial secondary
low pressure will develop too far offshore to have much impact
to southern New England. The main reason is the track of the
best dynamics, which are projected to move more east than
northeast from the Mid Atlantic coast. This is the most likely
solution at this point. However, ensembles still suggest a track
closer to southern New England is possible. Since this event is
still more than 24 hours out, do not want to close the doors on
possible outcomes.

Agree with the prior forecaster, this secondary low pressure
still appears to be quite progressive near our region. Stronger
development likely to not get going until it approaches the
Maritimes early Wednesday morning. The greatest risk for
precipitation will be toward southeast MA and RI, which will be
closer to the secondary low pressure.

With the combination of light QPF, limited window with
supporting temperatures, and not much lift in the dendritic
growth zone, not expecting much in the way of snowfall. In fact,
some areas towards the coast and over the coastal waters may
not switch over to snow at all. We will continue to monitor
potential travel difficulties during the Wednesday morning
commute across southeast MA (bulk of the precip falls before 7
AM). Stay tuned.

Precipitation should end quickly towards Wednesday afternoon as
low pressure near Nova Scotia develops further. The impact of
this on our region will be the development of gusty NW winds and
the arrival of colder air. Still looking at likely gusts of
30-40 mph, with a lower risk for isolated gusts closer to 50
mph. A Gale Warning will likely be necessary for the waters,
with potential for a Wind Advisory as well. Overnight temps drop
into the teens on strong CAA with gusty winds bringing single
digit wind chills in the interior.

Thursday...

Dry weather and mostly sunny skies as a high pressure arrives.
Temperatures will be noticeably colder. Most locations probably
remaining below freezing away from the south coast.

Friday into next Weekend...

High pressure moves offshore Thursday night, returning our
region back into a more southerly flow of air. Depending upon
the timing, there is a window here for another round of wintry
precipitation Friday morning, at least until temperatures rise
enough to force the transition to rain. Low level cold air may
linger longer than the current forecast timing, leading to a
risk for some freezing rain or sleet. Have low confidence in the
details this far out in time, so only mentioned the possibility
of rain and snow in the official forecast.

Projected temperature anomalies have persistently signaled
above normal temperatures late this week into next weekend.
Likely looking at a period of rain as a low pressure moving
along a cold front tracks towards our region. Low risk for some
snow to mix in, depending upon the time of day. Still too much
uncertainty to pin down those details at this point.

Across interior MA and CT, periods of MVFR and IFR conditions
associated with the light snow showers, with vsby down to 1 1/2
mi and ceilings down to 1000 ft at times. Most locations will
see no more than a coating of snow. In Eastern MA and RI, snow
showers will be even lighter but enough to result in brief MVFR
conditions especially between 19z and 21z. A light wintry mix or
rain shower for terminals on the Cape. Conditions improve from
W-E after 21Z. Light WSW winds at 5-10 kt, possibly a bit
higher along the South Coast this afternoon.

Tonight...High confidence.
VFR conditions with mostly clear skies. W winds 10-15 kt
gusting up to around 20 kt across the higher inland terrain,
upwards to 25-30 kt along the immediate S coast, Cape Cod and
the islands.

Tuesday...High confidence.
