.SYNOPSIS...
An overall active weather pattern is expected for the next several
days. Low pressure will slowly track from the lower Ohio River
Valley this evening, northeastward to coastal New England during
Saturday. This low will bring chances for rain tonight and
Saturday, with a transition to some light snow or a brief wintry
mix Saturday night. Dry weather should prevail Monday before
another low pressure brings rain and snow later Tuesday into
Wednesday. Dry weather will follow for the end of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
1020 PM Update...
With a stalled front extending across E NC to the mid Atlc
coast, a slow moving cold front sits across W NY to low pressure
across Ohio/W PA. An H5 long wave trough across the mid
Mississippi valley continues to dig as it progresses eastward.
This is keeping a relatively mild W-SW flow streaming across
southern New England this evening.
Northern edge of light precip has reached the S coast of New
England this evening. Noting patchy -RA along the coast from
KWST to KHYA and as far N as KPVD to KPYM at 03Z. Good
visibility remains in place. However, as moisture continues to
increase as the precip shifts northward through the night, will
see steadier rainfall develop along with patchy fog reducing
visibility.
One concerning issue will be whether cloud deck will lower
toward daybreak along the S coast and up the CT valley.
Something to monitor.
While temps remain steady or slowly rise through around 05Z-06Z,
T/Td spreads will continue to lower especially from the E slopes
of the Berkshires and along the Mass Pike southward. Temps will
fall toward daybreak as light/variable winds shift to northerly.
Expect readings to bottom out in the lower-mid 30s across the
higher inland terrain, where there could be some spotty mixed
precip toward daybreak in far NW Mass, to the mid 30s to lower
40s elsewhere.
Near term conditions have been brought current and trends
incorporated into the overnight forecast.
Previous Discussion...
Will see mid level ridging continue across the area, there is
some short wave energy that will move thru SNE during the
overnight. NAM and ECMWF hold off on rain until late tonight,
while GFS and hi-res models bring light QPF in sooner. Without
a lot of forcing, going with a compromise, with a chance for
light rain tonight, except light rain becoming likely far SW
portion of the CWA towards daybreak.
Most guidance for tonight is keeping overnight lows in the mid
30s to low 40s. However overnight lows will fall close to
freezing across the far northern interior of MA. If temps in
that area dip to or a bit below freezing, we could have a brief
wintry mix, sleet or light freezing rain. However with current
surface dew points in the 30s and overcast sky, temps will
likely keep just above freezing in that area. Will continue to
monitor.
Saturday...
A gray cloudy day with periods of light rain and drizzle.
Models in good agreement on surface low track, moving from the
Central Appalachians/Mid Atlantic Region to south of New
England. Slight deepening of the low center during the day,
dropping to about a 998 mb. Short wave energy passes over our
area during the day, and the mid level trough pushes closer to
our area (but remains to our west).
Model guidance varies somewhat on QPF, but general consensus is
light rain of 1 to 2 tenths of an inch. Late in the day as the
low starts tracking offshore, colder air moves into the SNE
northern interior, and precip may transition to or mix in with
snow. Any accum is expected to be under an inch.
Highs during Saturday range from the upper 30s to low 40s well
inland, to the 40s along the coast. Surface winds are mainly out
of the NE/NNE at 5 to 10 mph. However across far SE New
England, if the low tracks over the Cape/Islands, could have
winds veering from the E to SW during the day.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Tonight...
Mid level trough finally pushes eastward through our area
overnight, pushing the surface low offshore. Models have the low
intensifying as it tracks towards/into the Canadian Maritimes,
keeping this strengthening system farther north and more
progressive. Continue to expect light QPF amounts for our area,
up to 0.2 inch liquid equivalent. With the colder airmass moving
into our area behind the low, we will see precip changing from
rain to snow. Model soundings indicate sufficient cold air aloft
to support dendrites. At this time, thinking snowfall potential
would range from 1 to 3 inches over the interior, with up to an
inch in the coastal plain and lower CT River Valley. Overnight
lows in the mid 20s to low 30s expected for much of SNE, except
some mid 30s possible Boston, the Cape/Islands and portions of
S. coastal SNE.
Sunday...
Low pressure continues to deepen as it heads offshore, but 12z
models and ensembles suggest "too little too late" to have a
significant (i.e. snowy) impact on SNE. Nonetheless fairly tight
pressure gradient combined with decent lapse rates will bring gusty
NW winds most of the day Sunday, before weakening Sunday evening.

04/00Z guidance continued to exhibit some timing and amplitude
differences with respect to a potent mid level shortwave
expected to zip across the country late this weekend and early
this week. These differences are less extreme than this time 24
hours ago. This shortwave is still more than 24 hours away from
reaching western North America, so expecting further changes to
the details regarding the Tue/Wed storm over the next couple of
days. More tranquil weather expected late next week.
Monday...
Southern New England is sort of between systems during this
time. A mid level shortwave passes by mainly to our north. There
is some moisture, but not a tremendous amount. Could see some
light snow or rain showers across the interior, but probably
more like sprinkles or flurries. Plenty of clouds lingering,
keeping high temperatures only slightly above normal.
Tuesday/Wednesday...
Latest guidance remains reasonably consistent with bringing a
low pressure through southern New England sometime late Tue into
Wed. This is not looking like a track which would favor a lot of
snow. That said, it probably will not be a complete shutout for
some. This is still looking like any snow accumulation will be
elevation dependent. Some snow may mix in with the rain across
the coastal plains Tue night into Wed, once temperatures fall
some.
Best chance of accumulating snow remains the hills of
western/central MA and northern CT, especially near the
Berkshires, where it may never change over at all.
Temperatures remain above normal.
Thursday/Friday...
Dry weather follows as high pressure builds into region.
Temperatures will be more typical for early January on Thursday,
in the 30s, but will moderate once again Friday into the 40s.
