.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure off the east coast will transport near record warmth
northward into Southern New England Today and Sunday. It will
be breezy both days. A cold front brings showers and possible
thunderstorms late tonight into Sunday morning. Dry weather for
Monday and Tuesday, with cooler temperatures but still mild for
this time of year. Unsettled with a couple of storm systems for
midweek, though precipitation may be mostly wet instead of
wintry.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

High pressure offshore and a weather system over the Midwest combine
to bring southwest winds along the Eastern Seaboard. This flow will
continue to bring unseasonably mild air to Southern New England.  A
cold front moving from the Great Lakes aligns with the upper flow
and becomes stalled over Western/Northern NY and Northern New
England by this evening.

Cross sections of RH show a moist layer up to 750 mb, but with signs
of a dry surface layer midday and afternoon. Even with this
moisture, the cross section also shows substantial subsidence that
will work against any widespread precipitation. Of the operational
models, the GGEM shows barely measureable precip over RI and SE MA,
with better concensus of measureable precip reaching the Berkshires
and Northwest part of Massachusetts...closest to that stalling
front. The area is on the warm side of the system with temperatures
safely above freezing...this points to precipitation being in the
form of rain.

Expect a lot of clouds today, but most areas will be dry. The best
chance of showers will be in Western MA and possibly adjoining parts
of CT. Possible sprinkles/drizzle elsewhere.

Warm advection will limit the depth of the mixed layer, with
cross sections suggesting 950 mb. Temperatures at 950 mb will be
12- 13C, which would support a max sfc temp in the lower 60s.
Records for the day, as noted below, are in the upper 50s so a
record high is anticipated. Min temps so far on Jan 11th are
roughly 45 to 50...if this is maintained tonight through
midnight then a record high minimum temperature could be
anticipated.

Winds in the mixed layer are forecast at 30-35 kt. There are 50-60
kt winds above this layer, around 850 mb. It will be tough to
bring that level of wind to the surface, even within convection.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...

Upper trough over the Plains will swing northeast through the
eastern Great Lakes tonight and move across New England Sunday. This
will drive a cold front through Southern New England late tonight
and Sunday morning.

Expect mild temperatures. Dew points in the 50s will not let the
temperatures fall too much. The target for min temps will be in
the 50s, which would bring record high min temps for Jan 11.

Increasing low level moisture over Southern New England with PW
values around 1 inch the first half of the night, increasing to 1.5
inches late as that upper trough approaches and low level southwest
winds increase. Finally, stability factors show a narrow zone of
instability moving into Western New England toward morning.

Expect showers, with the best chance from after midnight through mid
morning. Instability suggests scattered or widely scattered
thunder...likely elevated...late tonight and Sunday morning.  These
showers could be briefly heavy. But the system is rather
progressive, so any heavy showers should be brief and the effects
more aimed at reduced visibility rather than flooding.

Winds leading the cold front will continue to be limited by the low
mixed layer. It is possible that the convection along the cold front
could briefly bring wind gusts near 50 kt close to the surface, but
it is uncertain whether such winds will come all the way down.

West winds behind the weather system bring drier air into Southern
New England Sunday afternoon. This suggests at least partial
clearing and possibly more. The dry air, period of solar heating,
and mild start will maintain unseasonably mild temperatures in the
afternoon. Based on 900 mb temperatures, max surface temps Sunday
may reach 60 to 65. This would be warm enough for another day of
record high temperatures.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Heavy showers with embedded thunder thru Sun early afternoon.
  Potential for gusty, low prob for damaging winds in thunder.
  Record high temperatures expected.

* Drier and cooler (less above-normal) temperatures for Mon into
  Tuesday.

* Unsettled midweek: weak warm front Tue Nite - Wed may bring
  brief/light wintry weather to rain. Stronger frontal system Wed
  Night - Thurs looks to be more wet than wintry.

* Watching for weekend storminess, though details unclear and
  uncertain.

Details...

Sunday:

** Cold frontal heavy showers with embedded thunder into the
morning hrs. Possible gusty winds and downpours in thunder **

** Record highs expected **

Frontal band of heavy showers to progress across the remainder of
Southern New England during the first half of the day on Sunday.
Ahead of the front, precipitable water levels of 1.25-1.5" remain at
levels not seen this early in the calendar year per SPC's sounding
climatology, and there remains favorable parameters for elevated
convection (~100-300 J/kg MUCAPE, 44-48 Total Totals values, 30-33 K
index values with 925 mb theta-e ridge around 320-325 Kelvin nosing
into southeast MA). Did note that most of the instability is
elevated, mainly for parcels being lifted above 800 mb. Maintained
idea of chance thunderstorms during the morning hrs, though thunder
may prove more scattered, and given the high-PWAT air heavy
downpours can't be ruled out. But storms should be racing along at a
good clip, so mostly short-duration downpours in association with
any thunder.

Of some concern is the strong SW low-level jet and the potential for
gusty to damaging winds, along and ahead of the frontal heavy
rain/thunder. While guidance varies (with the mesoscale high-res
guidance being the highest), even global model guidance 925-850 mb
jets as progged are exceedingly robust. 925 mb winds between 60-70
kts are shown in the ECMWF, 65-80 kt on the GFS, highest values SE
MA, the Cape and the Islands. This jet core also to be accompanied
by a progged isallobaric rise/fall couplet between 12-18z Sunday.
These winds do look to be locked up in the inversion, which leads to
questions if these winds can translate to the surface outside of any
convection. Suspect there may be a need for Wind Advisories even if
less or significantly limited mixing is anticipated - if you cut the
925 mb jet in half, you get close to Advisory level gusts. Given the
relatively stable low-levels, again question on how much of
this mixes through the inversion; am doubtful on High-Wind kind
of gusts, even though the low-level jet does support getting to
near that level out across the Cape and the Islands. Areas of
thunder could act to enhance the wind gusts though; while it is
low- predictability, will maintain the mention of gusty winds in
thunder into the first part of Sunday.

Clearing and drying behind the front for the afternoon. The
anomalously mild start temperature-wise to the day, along with SW
downsloping, Sunday may prove to be the warmest of the weekend.
Except for the Cape where mid/upper 50s are shown, showed highs for
many areas in the interior being into the low to mid 60s (!), which
would break records for the date.

Ridging then builds in on Sunday evening, and while 850 mb temps
aren't nearly as warm they'll still be running at levels around +1
to +5C by 12z Monday. Kept lows in the upper 20s to mid/upper 30s
for Sunday night with clearing skies and light NW to N winds.

Monday into Tuesday:

Surface high pressure ridge continues to build into Southern
New England on Monday and is maintained into Tuesday, amid a
flatter WSW 500 mb height pattern aloft. This should promote
generally dry weather, with 925 mb temps within a couple degrees
of either side of 0C (-2 to 0C to the Mass Pike, 0 to +2 south
of the Pike).

Overall looking for partly cloudy skies, dry conditions with highs
upper 30s - low/mid 40s with mid/upper 20s to lower 30s for lows
Monday night. Still above normal, but less so compared to the
weekend.

Tuesday Night - Wednesday:

Aforementioned ridge then shifts E/NE into northeast ME, with warm-
frontal isentropic lift and related clouds/precipitation looking to
overspread from SW to NE during the overnight into early Wednesday.

Variation in the coarser-res deterministic guidance on thermal
structure casts some level of uncertainty on precipitation types and
any accumulations. From a pure p-type top-down approach, the ECWMF
and Canadian GEM are generally on the milder side, supporting more
of a wintry mix to rain. GFS on the other hand is colder and could
support modest accumulations of light snow north of the Mass Pike
into the Route 2 corridor. With that said, were the colder GFS
thermal profiles correct, unsaturated dendritic snow growth layer
suggests less optimal snow microphysics for good snow growth.
Question on any impact as well given likely still warm pavement
temperatures. Still time to narrow down these details, but in
any event this does not look to be a significant precipitation
maker by any stretch.

Most areas should trend dry by Wed aftn, though likely brief with
another more robust frontal system right on its heels for Wed nite.
More on that below.

Wednesday Night - Thursday:

Stronger 500 mb trough and a sub-1000 mb cyclone then advances from
the lower Great Lakes into northern New England. Most models
indicate much better dynamics and forcing for large-scale ascent as
it pertains to this system. However this system appears to be warm
enough for precipitation being largely wet as opposed to wintry,
except perhaps briefly at onset as warm front lifts north for Wed
nite.

May see early lows Wednesday night in the 30s (coldest in NW
MA/Worcester Hills/Merrimack Valley), then rising to highs in the
upper 30s-mid 40s Thursday.

Thursday Night into the Weekend:

Dry conditions for Thursday night but also looks chilly, with NW
gradient winds picking up and a fairly robust shot of cold advection
for Thursday night into Friday. Temperatures should begin to trend
closer to seasonal levels (highs in the upper 20s-mid 30s, mid-teens
to lower 20s lows).

Dry conditions look to continue into Friday. More uncertainty
looking into the weekend, with some guidance indicating a frontal
system with possible secondary low development off the waters south
of southern New England for the weekend. Something to watch but too
much uncertainty in details for specifics.

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Today ... High confidence.

CIGs developing, with areas that the cigs fall to 2000-2500
feet. Other than a spot shower mainly dry weather prevails.
Strong southwest winds at 2000-3000 feet AGL supports low level
wind shear during the day.

Tonight ... Moderate confidence. Timing of showers is less
certain.

Widespread MVFR cigs and vsbys. Areas of IFR cigs with
scattered showers the second half of the night. Low risk for
elevated thunderstorms 06z-12z/1 AM to 7 AM. Very strong
southwest winds aloft continue to yield LLWS, mostly along the
South Coast including PVD. Some thunderstorms may contain gusty
winds at the surface along with heavy downpours.

Sunday... High confidence in trends.

Showers taper off from west to east in the morning as
a cold front moves offshore. MVFR cigs/vsbys improve to VFR as
the showers move off. Clearing skies by afternoon. Southwest
winds turn from the west with gusts to 30 kt.

Today ...

Southwest winds increase during the day, with gusts 25 to 30 kt
during the afternoon. Seas near 5 feet on the outer waters and
on RI/BID Sounds will build to 5 to 9 feet by afternoon on the
exposed waters, while the protected waters will reach 2 to 4
feet.

Tonight and Sunday...

Southwest winds increase to gale force overnight on most of the
waters, with gusts to 30 kt on Boston Harbor and Narragansett
Bay. The exposed waters will have seas build to 6 to 12 feet,
while protected waters will be 2 to 5 feet. The Gale Watch has
been converted to a Gale Warning for most waters, with a Small
Craft Advisory for Boston and Narragansett.

A cold front approaches late at night and crosses the waters
Sunday morning. This front will generate brief heavy showers and
could generate widely scattered thunderstorms. Once the front
goes through, winds shift out of the west and bring drier air
over the waters. This will bring a clearing trend during the
afternoon. West winds may still gust to gale force for a few
hours Sunday afternoon.
