.Elevated water levels continue on the Tallapoosa River due to heavy 
rainfall observed last week. Although levels have dropped below 
flood stage at the Tallapoosa Water Plant this morning, new 
forecasts have revised levels upward to now rise above flood 
stage once again by Wednesday evening. Additional rainfall expected 
this week will lead to those rises. Therefore, the Flood Warning 
remains in effect at the Tallapoosa Water Plant.

Meanwhile, forecast river stages at Wadley are expected to drop 
below flood stage soon, as early as tonight. The Flood Warning will 
remain in effect at Wadley until that time.

.SHORT TERM...

Today and Tonight.

A surface low will lift northeastward through the ArkLaMiss and into
the TN Valley today. As this happens, the warm front will lift to
our north, placing Central AL in the warm sector for much of the
day. I can't rule out some showers across the area this morning and
afternoon, but coverage looks to be limited with the best chances in
the far northwestern counties. Forecast guidance has been in good
agreement with persistent cloud cover most of today, which should
help limit the destabilization. Sounding profiles show a shallow
saturated layer that would support the modeled cloud cover, which is
likely due to the abundance of low level moisture from recent rains.

The cold front approaches our western counties this evening into
tonight as the surface low tracks just to our north and west. The
increasing pressure gradient from the proximity of the low will lead
to gusty winds. It's possible that these gradient winds could bring
down some trees because of the saturated grounds.

Strong to severe storms remain possible along the frontal boundary
as it moves into our area. Instability will be modest, and lapse
rates are on the lower end given the warm air aloft. Both should
help limit the overall strength of the storms. However, the dynamic
forcing is fairly strong along the line initially, and vertical
shear is quite high. Therefore, I can't rule out the potential for
severe storms that produce damaging winds. While the threat for a
brief tornado cannot be completely ruled out, surface winds veer
parallel to the front quickly, which will decrease the low level
directional shear and thus limit the tornado threat.

By midnight, the surface low has already lifted into West Virginia,
and any shear becomes completely uni-directional along the line.
Storm motions will likely be parallel to the front, so some training
of storms is possible, which could increase the threat for localized
flash flooding. WPC has highlighted this shift with a moderate risk
in our far northwest, and we'll continue to carry the flash flood
watch for portions of Central AL.

As the front continues to move southeastward through the overnight
hours, the forcing weakens with the low continuing to lift further
away. The heights remain nearly neutral as the upper trough really
doesn't make any eastward movement. These factors, combined with the
weak lapse rates and decreasing instability, should lead to a
gradual decrease in the convection along the front. I'll maintain
the slight risk for the northwestern two-thirds of the area, with
the areas in the southeast under a marginal (combination of Day 1
and Day 2 SPC outlooks). The front will move south and east of our
area Thursday morning, ending any severe weather potential.

Thursday night through Friday.

Frontal passage will continue across much of the Southeast on
Thursday night, with only a few lingering areas of overrunning light
rain possible across the far southeast Thu evening. A much
cooler/drier airmass will build across Central Alabama Thu night
with northerly flow streaming from a stout high pressure centering
near the mid Mississippi River Valley by Friday morning. Thus, a
cold Fri morning is expected - with lows in the 20s/30s just before
sunrise. With sub-freezing temperatures forecast, any lingering
water on sheltered roadways across the north could freeze overnight.
Motorists should exercise caution until temperatures rebound later
in the morning. Highs Fri afternoon are forecast in the 40s/50s
amidst the stable Canadian airmass with an amplified trough now
passing overhead and to our east.

Saturday through Tuesday.

Zonal split-flow aloft will characterize much of the region by
Saturday with a low-level subtropical ridge trying to develop across
the Gulf. With time, flow trajectories across the western Gulf could
permit some light isentropic rain across the area by Sunday, though
this notion still varies amongst guidance. Have kept PoPs
conservative for now, especially as QPF would likely remain on the
lighter side anyway. By early next week the upper-level pattern is
expected to become more amplified as a positively tilted longwave
trough moves across the Rockies and into the Plains. This would
likely foster cyclogenesis to our northwest as the Deep South/Gulf
Coast experiences warm/moist advection and height rises.

An axis of low-level confluent flow is expected to develop
between the trough and ridge and generally collocate with a
surface front - somewhere from the Southern Plains northeastward
into the Ohio Valley. This will be the primary focus for
rain/thunderstorm activity for Mon/Tue, but guidance remains wet
overall amidst our saturating airmass. At some point this low
pressure system would need to eject northeastward and drag the
cold front into the Southeast, though persistent southwesterly
flow aloft does not favor a lot of southeastward movement of the
front. Due to uncertainties with timing/spatial extent of these
features, PoPs were truncated through the long-term to <55% (below
'likely'). Slight chance thunderstorm mentioning was included
Mon/Tue as forecast temperatures would suggest at least non-zero
values of MUCAPE, though no severe weather is expected at this
time.

Only isolated rain showers are expected over the next few hours as
post frontal rains from earlier have dissipated. Rain showers are
expected to return in the morning Wednesday as the front should
push back north as a warm front. Although there may be a few
breaks in the rain, overall we remain in a wet pattern with a
second front approaching from the northwest Wednesday night with
possible strong storms. MVFR and IFR cigs are possible tonight.
Winds may not go totally calm for all with some gradients
remaining up. Gusty winds are expected during the afternoon on
Wednesday ahead of the next front. Showers become widespread
Wednesday night with some embedded Tstorms.

comms issues getting their obs into our system.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Periods of rain will continue through at least midday on Thursday,
with additional rainfall of at least ~1-1.5" across Central
Alabama. A strong cold front moves through the area thereafter
which will help promote cooler and drier weather through at least
Saturday. Minimum relative humidity values should remain above 30%
Friday and Saturday afternoons before better moisture begins to
return Sunday.
