.SYNOPSIS...
Dry weather will continue through tonight. A storm system
will bring a push of milder air along with moderate to heavy
rainfall and gusty winds later Christmas Eve into early Christmas
Day. Rain will change to snow in some places on Christmas Day as
colder air returns. Additional snow showers are possible across the
Adirondacks over the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
As of 1230 AM EST, some breaks in the mid level clouds combined
with lighter winds and deep snowpack have allowed temps to drop
into the mid/upper teens across portions of the Lake George
region, with mainly mid 20s to lower/mid 30s elsewhere, warmest
in areas (highest across higher terrain west of the Hudson
River, and within the Hudson River Valley from Albany
southward).

Clouds will continue to increase overnight, with some lower
clouds expected to develop closer to daybreak and spread
northward. Some patchy drizzle may develop around daybreak
across portions of the SE Catskills as well, with some pockets
of freezing drizzle possible where temps remain at/below
freezing.

South winds will remain gusty within the immediate Capital
Region, eastern Catskills and SW Adirondacks, with some gusts
possibly reaching 25-35 mph at times.

Temperatures will likely hold steady or rise slightly from
current levels through daybreak, with greater rises in temps
expected across the Lake George region after the initial free-
fall from earlier this evening.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Flood Watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday
afternoon for the entire forecast area...

High Wind Warning in effect for western New England and the
Taconics...

A strong storm system will push across the region later Thursday
through Friday with multiple hazards, including heavy rainfall
(capable for flooding), strong wind gusts, a large swing in
temperatures and fog. Read below for the details regarding each
hazard.

Rain: Rain will gradually overspread the region from west to east on
Thursday. Precipitation coverage and intensity looks rather light
and spotty early Thursday, before increasing in coverage and
intensity by Thursday afternoon. Based on forecast soundings,
precipitation may start out as drizzle in some locations given
forecast soundings show low-level moist air below 800 mb with a
pocket of drier air aloft. Air temperatures may hover at or below
freezing across a few higher terrain locations (mainly southern
Adirondacks) early in the morning where a brief period of light
freezing rain or freezing drizzle is possible, but this is
expected to be short lived as temperatures will continue to
rise quickly.

The heaviest rain will occur Thursday night through early Friday
morning. In any heavier period of rainfall, rainfall rates could
reach between 0.50 and 1 inch per hour. It is within this period
where the flood threat will be at its greatest as the rainfall
combined with rapid snowmelt (and the warmest air) will be
maximized.

Total rainfall has slightly increased with 1 to 2 inches across
the valley areas (with locally higher amounts) and 2 to 4
inches across the higher terrain. Poor drainage/urban flooding
as well as river flooding will be possible (see Hydrology
section for more details on the flooding).

Wind: With a strong low-level wind field in place across the region,
strong south to southeasterly wind gusts are expected during
Thursday night. Favored areas in a southeasterly flow regime will
contain the strongest winds (Taconics, southern Greens, Berkshires
and Litchfield Hills). Within this area, wind gusts up to 55 mph
will be possible. With increased confidence on this wind threat, the
High Wind Watch has been upgraded to a High Wind Warning. Elsewhere,
wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph will be possible, especially within any
embedded passing convective elements.

Temperatures: With the strong south to southeasterly flow,
temperatures will reach the 40s to lower 50s by Thursday afternoon,
then continue rising through Thursday night, reaching the 50s to
near 60 by daybreak Friday. Dew points will also rise into the 40s
to mid-50s Thursday night as well. The combination of the mild air
and high dewpoints will also assist with the rapid melting of the
snowpack.

Fog: With the mild air and rain falling over the cold ground and
snowpack, areas of fog are likely to develop, some of which can
become dense. The greatest fog concerns will occur during the period
of heaviest rainfall (Thursday night through Friday morning).

The storm's cold front will push through the area Friday morning
with precipitation gradually ending. Still, some scattered rain
showers will be possible during the afternoon. Once colder air
arrives, rain showers may mix with and change to snow showers across
some areas. Accumulations, if any, look to be minor. The potential
for a flash freeze is low at this time, though some icy spots may
still occur on any wet, untreated surfaces Friday evening once
temperatures start dropping below freezing.

Additional snow showers will be possible Friday night with the
approach of main upper trough, with best chances across the SW
Adirondacks. Low level flow looks to remain southwest, so chances
for significant Lake Effect bands look to remain west of northern
Herkimer County through daybreak Saturday. Lows will dip into the
teens to near 20.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
We start the long term period in the wake of a strong storm system
Saturday morning. Lake effect snow will be ongoing across northern
Herkimer and Hamilton counties as winds shift out of the west and
along the main axis of Lake Ontario. Current lake temps are still in
the mid 40s so conditions are good for lake effect snow. Outside of
the lake effect snow, weather will be dry and chilly for the rest of
the forecast area with highs on Saturday in the 20s to low 30s
increasing a few degrees into the mid 20s to mid 30s for Sunday.
Areas outside of the southern Dacks have the best chance of seeing
more sunshine both days.

Our attention then turns to the next potential storm system on
Monday. There looks to be a couple pieces of upper level energy at
play but the main surface low looks to track to our north, keeping
us on the warmer side of the system initially. A mix of rain (mainly
south and in valleys) and snow (mainly southern Dacks) moves in
during the day Monday, with best chances for more precipitation
further north. Cold air quickly filters in behind the departing
system Monday night with rain changing over to some light snow,
including additional lake effect. Temperatures on Monday in the low
30s to low 40s, dropping into the low teens to low 20s Monday night.
Tuesday will be on the chilly side with highs struggling to reach
the freezing mark. Dry and cold weather continues for the mid-week
period.

.AVIATION /07Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Through 06z Friday....Weather impacts to aviation operations at
the ALY TAF sites include:

*LLWS issues through the entire period with winds at 2.0 kft AGL
ranging between 40-55kts.

*MVFR-IFR cigs developing and persisting around 11z-12z/Thursday and
points forward.

*MVFR-IFR visibilities developing between 14-16z/Thursday and points
forward with cigs potentially dropping down to LIFR levels due to
rain and mist/fog.

*Southerly winds becoming stronger Thursday evening around
00z/Friday and points forward. Winds could gusts as high as 40 kts
towards the end of the TAF period (especially KALB/KPSF).

As of 1:00am EST, the forecast area is sitting ahead of a dynamic
mid-latitude cyclone that's approaching from the central United
States. Meanwhile, a departing high pressure system resides to our
east. The synoptic setup has set the stage for a southerly return
flow to develop over the area. This is allowing for plenty of low-
level moisture and isentropic lifting to take place. That said, per
the latest observations, VFR conditions are ongoing across the
forecast area with a mix of high level clouds about 200.0 kft AGL
and mostly clear to clear skies. As the overnight hours wear on,
expect clouds to increase in coverage and lower in elevation across
the TAF sites as low level moisture advection and isentropic lifting
strengthens. By the early morning hours between 11z-13z/Thursday,
the TAF sites should be under mostly cloudy skies with ceilings down
to MVFR levels.

Sometime between 16z/Thursday-00z/Friday, precipitation will move in
over KALB/KGFL/KPOU. For KPSF, precipitation should start moving in
between 23z/Thursday-03z/Friday. Precipitation at onset will start
off drizzly, but will become a light rain as the stratus deck
continues to lower. Once precipitation starts, flying
conditions will deteriorate even more with cigs/visibilities
ranging between MVFR-LIFR levels (especially after 00z/Friday
when light rain transitions to a more moderate to heavy
rainfall). These conditions will persist through the remainder
of the 06z TAF cycle.

Low level wind shear (LLWS) will be an issue throughout the 06z
TAF period. This dynamic storm system will be accompanied with
a large and impressive wind field. 850 mb winds or winds about
5.0 kft AGL were sampled at around 50 kts during the start of
this TAF period increasing to 70+ kts by the end of this TAF
period. Winds at the surface will be comparatively lighter at
5-15 kts by the start of this TAF period increasing to 10-20 kts
after 00z/Friday with gusts as high as 35-40 kts especially at
KALB/KPSF. Provided this situation, winds between the surface
and 2.0 kft aloft will be decoupled through the TAF period with
a differential of 25 kts or more.

Southerly winds overnight through the morning hours will generally
be between 5-15 kts across the TAF sites with gusts 20-25 kts at
KALB/KPSF. Later this afternoon into this evening, southerly winds
will strengthen as the storm nears to 10-20 kts with gusts as high
as 40 kts. Wouldn't be surprised with some gusts top 40 kts
especially at KALB and KPSF.

.HYDROLOGY...
Flood Watch is now in effect for the entire forecast area from
6 PM Thursday to 6 PM Friday...

A storm system and cold front approaching from the west will
bring moderate to heavy rain to the region late Thursday into
Friday. In addition, strong winds and seasonably mild air will
allow for significant snowmelt.

Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected Thursday afternoon
and night, with localized amounts of 4 inches possible across
the eastern Catskills. Significant snowmelt is expected, but it
is uncertain how much of the snowpack will be lost during this
event.

Due to this potential for heavy rain, and significant snow
melt (even now across the Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks), a
flood watch has been issued for the entire region from Thursday
evening through Friday afternoon.

Trends will be watched closely, especially regarding snowmelt
potential, over the next few days to determine potential extent of
flooding. Minor to major river flooding will be possible,
especially for rivers/streams east of the Hudson River (along
the Walloomsac, Hoosic and Mettawee Rivers) and across the
Schoharie Valley and Lake George Saratoga region, along with
urban and small stream flooding, especially where storm drains
remain clogged from snow and ice.
