Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong winds continue over the western part of the state
especially from he Being Strait northward through Friday. The
gusty winds combined with a cold airmass continues to produce cold
Wind Chills over the Western Brooks Range and North Slope.
Lingering snowfall for the Northern Interior as well as the
Central and Eastern Brooks Range will taper off tonight. Colder
temperatures will filter in across the Central and Eastern
Interior Friday and into the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft, at the 500 mb level,the long wave trough over the west
coast will shift to the east and as a 496 dam low over Bristol Bay
tonight drifts south and east into the Gulf of Alaska on Friday.
Southeasterly flow will continue over the Interior through Friday
with colder air will filtering in across the Interior through the
weekend. A weak upper low will form over the Southern Interior by
Saturday morning.

On the surface, A 1040 mb high over Siberia extends along a ridge
north and east across the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas and will
continue to drift south and east while weakening slowly through
the weekend and into early next week. A broad area of low
pressure will persist over mainland Alaska through the end of the
week.

Central and Eastern Interior:
Lingering snowfall for the Northern Interior as well as the
Central and Eastern Brooks Range will taper off tonight. Colder
temperatures will filter in across the Central and Eastern
Interior Friday and into the weekend. After the snow tapers off,
tonight there will be a cooling trend across the Central and
Eastern Interior through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to
drop tonight and Friday morning as colder air moves in aloft and
skies clear out. Intermittent cloud cover will make the
temperatures forecast difficult for the weekend; however, we
expect low temperatures at valley level of 20s to 30s degrees
below zero, with some colder spots. Temperatures in the hills are
expected to remain in the teens and single digits below. High
temperatures are expected to only reach around 20 below in the
valleys.

West Coast and Western Interior:
Strong Northerly winds will continue along the west coast with
gusts to over 60 mph through Friday morning. Blizzard conditions
have diminished this afternoon some at Kivalina but are expected
to resume again tonight as winds strengthen again this evening.
The ongoing blizzard warning for locations along the Bering Sea
has been extended into Friday morning. Scattered snow showers
over the northern portions of the Western Interior will continue
to taper off this evening.

North Slope and Brooks Range:
Temperatures will slowly drop through the weekend and into early
next week with lows in the 20s below along the coast and the 30s
to near 40 below in the interior portions of the North Slope. The
temperatures will slowly moderate by the middle of next week.
