Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Even while skies over Southcentral have cleared today allowing for
sunny skies, the signs of this very active weather pattern are
very clear when looking ahead. Before the next system moves into
the area, a tight pressure gradient along the Gulf Coast is
producing gusty offshore winds throughout the area. These winds
are beginning to diminish as a narrow ridge of high pressure moves
in ahead of an advancing front over the Bering. This front is
associated with a low located over the extreme Northern Bering,
but has an elongated front that stretches from the Y-K Delta into
the Central Aleutians. This front is bringing widespread rain and
gusty south winds throughout this region, but is beginning the
dissipate as the front makes landfall. Along the southern edge of
this front, a developing wave south of Adak is moving northward.
This wave will intensify significantly and become a notable
weather maker for most of the area through mid-week.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Synoptic model agreement remains quite good into Wednesday,
leading the generally good confidence in forecast trends
throughout the area. Starting Wednesday, this agreement begins to
break down, especially with regards to the developing triple point
low just north of Kodiak Island. This is a feature that
typically develops and amplifies very rapidly and leads to poor
model agreement, which is certainly the case with this system as
well. While some of the disagreement may appear subtle, they are
having significant impacts on the confidence of the wind forecast
from the Western Kenai Peninsula northward into the Anchorage
Bowl/Matanuska Valley for Wednesday. Otherwise synoptic model
agreement is much better in comparison throughout the rest of the
area leading to higher forecast confidence, especially over the
Bering Sea/Aleutians.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds are expected to continue
through the early morning hours on Tuesday. There is a chance for
fog/stratus to develop over Cook Inlet early Tuesday morning,
however at this point it appears that any development should
remain south of the terminal and was left out of the TAF. If the
forecast trends to more fog production in the northern inlet this
will likely need to be updated.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Tonight
through Wednesday Night)...

The next winter storm originating from the Bering Sea will force
the leading edge of its frontal zone over the western Gulf
starting Tuesday afternoon, then spreading east and across the
Gulf and inland through Wednesday morning. There's uncertainty as
to whether the future location of the triple point will stay on
track over Kenai or will it shift more eastward in the next day
or two. On this forecast package, have leaned more on NAMNest for
the localized winds to reflect the onset of the frontal boundary.
Breezy to very strong winds and dangerous gusts are expected to
remain close to the center of the triple point, which could move
right over Kenai Peninsula through Tuesday afternoon. For this
reason, the wind speed and gusts for Southcentral Alaska have been
adjusted to reflect the expected situation, especially from along
the eastern Kenai Peninsula to Turnagain Arm through the western
Prince William Sound between Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
A High Wind Watch has been issued for Turnagain Arm and higher
elevations surrounding it starting Tuesday night.

Warmer temperatures following the frontal boundary will leap
across the Gulf and the coastal areas including western Kenai
Peninsula on Tuesday. The layout of the frontal axis combined with
the lack of downslope winds will most likely keep several areas
along the western Kenai Peninsula through Anchorage Bowl a bit dry
except for only minimal rain there in the next couple days. As
for the Prince William Sound, Cordova and Copper River basin,
increased rain and a chance of snow will reach those areas as the
frontal zone moves inland through Wednesday.

Over Kodiak Island, breezy to strong southerly winds will start to
kick in Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. Strong winds and
gusts will pass through Kodiak especially near Mill Bay, Monashka
Bay and Spruce Island Wednesday evening before winds taper off
around midnight Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A weakening front pushes the Southwest coast today, bringing some
light rain to the Kuskokwim Delta tonight. By tomorrow, a second
front coming off a low in the Western Bering approaches the
Southwest coast. Warmer onshore flow and periods of moderate to
heavy precipitation are expected along the coasts and across
Bristol Bay, and will remain light elsewhere. Warm air advection
will allow the precipitation to remain as rain for the majority of
the region, with the higher elevations seeing snow or rain/snow
mix. Additionally, winds will strengthen across the Kuskokwim
Delta and Bristol Bay Tuesday night as the front pushes on shore
with flow being predominantly southeasterly through Wednesday.
Much colder air comes in behind this low, which will result in a
downward trend in temperatures after Wednesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

A strong low enters the Western Bering on Tuesday and tracks
northeast, approaching the Southwest coast by Wednesday. A
widespread band of moderate to heavy precipitation is expected
ahead of the front, as well as a much warmer air mass. Thus,
precipitation tomorrow into Wednesday is expected to be all rain.
The back side of the low consists of storm force winds and
widespread gales under strong northerly/northwesterly flow, which
in turn brings in significant cold air advection. Precipitation
behind the low will likely be snow or a rain/snow mix.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Gulf of Alaska:

A Northern Gulf low drifts southeastward through Sat. Easterly
small craft winds and waves with local gale force winds near the
capes along coastal waters through Fri. A front stretches across
the Gulf through Sat. Confidence is good for widespread westerly
high-end gale force winds to expand northeast from the Shumagin
Islands to the Barren Islands and Kamishak Bay and across the
Gulf and diminish on Sat.

Bering Sea:

A front exits the Eastern Bering for Fri. Widespread northwest
small craft winds and waves with local gale force winds move
across Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula diminishing Fri. A
broad upper level trough brings a change in airmass and increasing
confidence for widespread small craft winds and waves across the
Bering with local high-end gale force winds developing across the
Aleutians for Fri and move into the Eastern Bering by Sat.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...
There remains some differences in exactly how quickly the triple
point that will develop in the Gulf will dissipate and depart
the area, but the general trend will be for improving conditions
throughout the area as high pressure builds in from the Interior
and Bering Sea. The main impacts from this pattern will be for
offshore winds throughout the Gulf Coast and Cook Inlet due to a
strong pressure gradient ahead of the ridging. Over the Eastern
Aleutians/AKPen this will also likely result in widespread
rain/snow showers and gusty northerly winds through the weekend.

This gradient should then begin to slacken throughout the area by
early next week, allowing for more benign conditions to setup,
especially to the South Mainland. There is significant spread in
the track of a low through Siberia by Monday, especially with the
12z EC which is the most aggressive with tracking this well south
of the Bering Strait. For now the forecast will favor a track well
north of the AOR, leaving much quieter conditions in the
forecast, but model trends will continue to be monitored over the
coming days.
