.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A broad upper level trough from a stacked North Pacific low runs
northwestward past Bristol Bay and Kusko Delta, while an upper
level ridge parks over the AlCan border. Steady light snow
continues to move across portions of Prince William Sound and
Copper River Basin, including Gulkana. Radar and weather
observations at Cordova and Whittier reported light rain which
coincides with warmer temperatures around the northern Gulf
ranging from the mid to upper 30s. At Southwest Alaska, continuous
light snow persists over much of the area, except at a couple of
warmer spots along the west corridor of the Alaska Range. Cold air
advection filling in from the eastern Bering will continue to
support dispersing of light snow across Southwest Alaska. Cirrus
and high level clouds from the Gulf will move across the lower
Kuskokwim Valley through Southcentral today.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The short-term synoptic pattern is well-handled by the models
except for brief periods where ECM wanders further away from GFS
and NAM. Both GFS and NAM shares compatible solutions staging the
onset of a North Pacific storm aiming for the Gulf in the days
ahead. Over the Bering, a series of Northwest Pacific lows will
drive embedded shortwaves across the eastern Bering. This will
enhance mix rain/snow over Southwest Alaska and may last through
at least Thursday and/or Friday. By far, GFS is the overachiever
of all the models, as its past performance speaks for the current
events. As a result, there is low confidence in the model forecast
beyond Thursday night.

.AVIATION...As light snow continues through the day, expect cigs
and vis to generally trend downward. Confidence is only moderate
in exactly how far conditions will fall. Due to the dry nature of
the snow, visibility will likely have a better chance for being
reduced. A period of heavier snow is expected later tonight which
should cause the worst conditions during the TAF window.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2/Tuesday
through Wednesday)...

The commencement of a long duration snowfall event is in progress
across much of Southcentral. The low levels have saturated and
the light snow is starting to reach the surface across the
interior valleys. It is being driven by weak isentropic ascent to
kick off the event. The snow is anticipated to continue nearly
uninterrupted for much of Tuesday into early Wednesday from the
northern Kenai Peninsula to the eastern Susitna Valley, in
addition to most of the Copper River Basin. While snowfall rates
are not expected to be significant, the prolonged duration
combined with the fluffy and dry nature of the snow will still
yield storm totals of 2-4 inches across Anchorage with locally up
to 6 inches for the upper hillsides and in/around Hatcher Pass.
Widespread amounts of 3-5 inches are expected for the Copper River
Basin before precipitation wanes from southwest to northeast
during the morning and early afternoon on Wednesday. Driving
conditions could be adversely impacted for much of the day into
tonight, particularly with lowered visibilities during any periods
of increased snow intensity.

A negatively-tilted shortwave trough will eject from an upper
level low centered out over the Y-K Delta tonight into early
Wednesday. The forcing for the continuing snowfall over the Mat-
Su Valleys will increasingly become aided by both positive
vorticity advection in the mid levels and by upslope flow as
winds near 700 mb become more westerly in the Anchorage bowl. Snow
may pick up in intensity for several hours along the western edge
of the Chugach Range before the trough axis passes through and
snow quickly shuts off by midday Wednesday. Another system will
approach from the southwest by Wednesday night with mixed
precipitation possible around Kodiak Island. Northeast gale force
winds should quickly materialize across the southern Cook Inlet
and Shelikof Strait as the low approaches Kodiak early Thursday
morning. With onshore flow, precipitation amounts could add up to
around one inch of liquid for Kodiak City from late Wed to late
Thu.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Thursday)...

Light snow will continue across northwestern Bristol Bay and the
Kuskokwim Delta today under a near weakening low. Additional
totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible through midnight. Drier
conditions are expected Wednesday under a weak upper ridge.
Scattered snow showers will re-develop by Thursday, mainly along
the coast, as a low tracks near Kodiak Island. Temperatures are
expected to fall through the week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A strong, compact low is currently moving across the western
Aleutians, bringing rain and gusty southerly winds. This will
weaken as it continues to track eastward. A very similar low will
track near the same area late Wednesday into Thursday, though
there remains uncertainty on its exact position and strength. In
any case, no significant impacts are expected. Rain/snow showers
will track west to east across the central/eastern Aleutians and
Pribilofs tonight into early Wednesday morning along the
aforementioned low's associated front. Rain will become more
steady by late-morning as a broader North Pacific low approaches
the Chain. Gusty southeasterly winds are initially expected,
before switching to northwest by Wednesday evening behind the low.
A number of lows/fronts will continue the unsettled/showery
pattern across the Bering on Thursday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Thursday through Saturday)...

Gulf of Alaska: The forecast period looks to be active during this
time with two lows potentially impacting the Gulf. The first one
Thursday we continue to become more confident in that a gale
force system will impact the Gulf, however, exact track and
intensity remain uncertain affecting where the gale force winds
occur. There may be a brief lull in the gale force winds Friday
especially for the western Gulf. Another gale force system may
impact the Gulf Friday night into Saturday but this one remains
highly uncertain.

Bering Sea: For the eastern Bering, confidence has increased some
since yesterday for a potentially gale force system to impact the
region Thursday through Friday, however, exact placement and
intensity continue to remain uncertain. Confidence is fairly high
for the western, northern, and central Bering for the forecast
period to have relatively benign conditions with winds less than
30 kts and seas less than 15 feet.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7/Friday through Monday)...

The weather pattern during the forecast time period continues to
show strong Arctic high pressure locked in over the Interior of
Alaska east to the Yukon Territory. The subtropical jet continues
to remain fairly active during this time frame as well with
multiple storms trying to move northeastward and into the cold
air that is locked in across the interior areas of Alaska and the
Yukon. Latest data suggests that coastal areas of the eastern Kenai
Peninsula, Kodiak Island, and Prince William Sound area have the
best chance to see any meaningful precipitation during this
timeframe. Some of the energy from these systems may occasionally
send some light snow into the Anchorage area and across Southwest
but this time frame looks to remain on the colder side with
temperatures averaging below normal. The exact track and intensity
of any of these systems in this time frame continues to remain
highly uncertain and will become more clearer over the coming
days. Therefore, stay tuned. The weather continues to remain
fairly active as well across the Aleutian Island Chain with
chances for rain and snow accompanied by some wind with any system
that moves through.
