Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Anchorage AK 351 AM AKDT Wed Mar 11 2020 .ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS... A weakening front is currently bringing scattered rain/snow showers to the central Aleutians. Farther east, northerly gap winds continue across the Copper River Basin through Valdez west of an upper level trough. Mostly clear skies are indicated over much of the state. As such, temperatures are falling well below zero over areas away from the coast. && .MODEL DISCUSSION... Models remain in good agreement with high resolution models continuing to depict the aforementioned gap winds well. Forecast confidence remains above normal. && .AVIATION... PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)... An upper-level trough along the Al-Can border will continue to slowly track east today. As it does, the surface trough over the northern gulf will weaken and begin to push south and east, paralleling the Alaska Peninsula. The result will be a decrease in the pressure gradient between it and the surface ridge nestled over the interior of the state. As the gradient relaxes, the strong outflow winds that peaked overnight will begin to diminish in intensity. The departure of the trough has also ushered in clear and dry conditions across Southcentral, with arctic air continuing to spill into the region from the interior. An upper-level ridge situated over the Bering will begin to push east today, crossing the Alaska Range by late Thursday and settling over the Gulf for Friday. As this system tracks east, however, a shortwave currently over the northern Bering will move southeast ahead of the ridge, tracking over the region and gaining strength as it moves over the Copper River Basin. This feature will a produce another surface trough along the immediate coast and yield a secondary increase in the outflow winds beginning later tonight through Thursday evening as the pressure gradient tightens. Although the outflow winds will be gusty through the bays and passes of the eastern Kenai Peninsula and western Prince William Sound, the strongest gusts are again expected from eastern Prince William Sound to the Copper River Delta, including the city of Valdez, the Valdez waterways, and Thompson Pass. The winds are expected to diminish Thursday night and Friday as the ridge settles over the Gulf. With the ridge axis anchored overhead by the end of the week, a warming trend will begin to take shape as clear and dry conditions prevail. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)... An upper level wave moving near Hooper Bay and Toksook Bay will keep a chance for snow showers in the forecast early today. The remainder of Southwest Alaska will remain dry through the end of the week as an upper level ridge moves over the region. This will also help to bring a warm up in temperatures over the next few days. The next chance for precipitation will be this weekend as a front in the Bering approaches the Kuskokwim Delta Coast. && .SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)... Ridging over the western Bering this morning has helped to keep quiet conditions across the region. By this afternoon, a storm force system will move over the western Bering and Aleutians, bringing warmer temperatures along with it. These strong southerly winds will continue as the pressure gradient tightens between the associated low center and high pressure over the eastern Bering. This will keep an elongated precipitation shield moving eastward to the central Aleutians and Bering as the strongest core of winds lift northward through Thursday night. Meanwhile, northeasterly small craft advisory winds will persist over the eastern Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula as as a North Pacific low lifts northward through the overnight hours tonight. Winds across these areas will shift to a southeasterly direction by Thursday, allowing for strong gap flow as the stronger aforementioned front exits into the northern Bering. Widespread precipitation will continue across most of the Bering and Aleutians through Friday, with the Alaska Peninsula also seeing a chance for snow showers during this time. && .MARINE (Days 3 through 5)... Thursday and Friday, the offshore and enhanced gap winds will continue across the Barren Islands and the Copper River Delta. These winds will diminish late Friday. A storm force system over the northern Bering will keep an area of storm force to high end gale force winds west of St Matthew Island and north of 56N on Thursday. By Friday, this system will have weakened, but enhanced winds and rough seas still anticipated into Saturday. Shifting to the North Pacific, a low will approach the central and eastern Aleutians Thursday night, bringing the next round of precipitation to the eastern Aleutians, including Dutch Harbor, through Friday night. A ridge will set up over the Gulf Of Alaska and mainland. Once this ridge gets established, the active corridor for low tracks will be the NW Pacific to the Western Bering. This ridge is expected through Tuesday March 18th. && .LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)... Both the GFS and ECMWF ping into an "Omega Block" setting up over the Gulf of Alaska. This will keep clear skies and dry weather over most of Southcentral Alaska. Temperatures will continue to run slightly below normal.
