Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A deep long-wave trough extends south across the mainland and
Gulf of Alaska. On satellite imagery there is a wound up
occlusion in the Gulf Of Alaska with the cloud shield extending
into Southcentral. Cirrus and low clouds from this front extend
all the way back over portions of southwest Alaska. The jet is
actually moving into southeast AK. The associated cold front
spans westward into the Central Pacific north of Hawaii. This is
a major baroclinic zone. Northerly flow continues to advect arctic
air into southwest Alaska. ASCAT (Advanced Scatterometer) data
has detected gusty gap winds on the south side of the Alaska
Peninsula for the fourth night in a row.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Model consensus has improved this run. The GFS/ECMWF/NAM and
Canadian are in generally good agreement in the short term. There
are some timing differences that will impact the onset of the
gusty winds and the precipitation for Southcentral. The North
Pacific and the Bering also look decent in the short term.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...With an approaching low gusty northerly winds will persist
today. As the low moves into Cook Inlet this evening, strong
southeasterly winds will move up Turnagain Arm and aloft over the
airport. Low level wind shear is likely as surface pressure
gradients continue to support a northerly component to the wind.
Ceilings will lower as the low approaches, with potential for
some light snow or flurries. However, don't expect this to be
enough to reduce ceiling/vis below VFR. If this does occur, it
will be brief. Once the southeast winds arrive aloft ceilings will
quickly rise with downslope flow off the Chugach and Kenai
Mountains.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A strong low over the western Gulf this morning will track over
the Kenai Peninsula and into Cook Inlet through this afternoon.
The tight pressure gradient combined with quick pressure rises
behind the low will help to increase wind speeds across the Kenai
Peninsula this afternoon. With better model agreement of the
low's position, the blizzard watch has been upgraded to a blizzard
warning for strong wind gusts in falling snow, which will cause
whiteout conditions for portions of the eastern Kenai Peninsula.
Turnagain Arm will also see an increase in winds starting this
afternoon into the overnight hours, which could push down into the
Upper Hillside of Anchorage. However, conditions are expected to
stay dry overnight for the Hillside and Anchorage Bowl.

By early afternoon, winds will begin to weaken for Thompson Pass
as the current blizzard warning expires, but expect snow to
continue throughout the day. Kodiak will also begin to improve
this afternoon when winds also weaken. Elevated winds winds will
continue across much of the Gulf today as cold air, which has
moved southward across the eastern Bering, quickly moves back
northward across the Gulf behind the surface low. As winds and
precipitation move onshore of Southcentral, this will help give
a temporary reprieve of the weeks of bitter cold temperatures.
Anchorage airport has already reported its highest temperature of
the month (25 degrees) as temperatures have increased overnight.
Winds and chances for snowfall calm down for Thursday across most
of Southcentral, with the north Gulf coast being the only area to
still see shower activity.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A strong arctic high remains in place, keeping temperatures well
below average. Bitterly cold wind chills will continue through
Thursday morning as the combination of cold northerly winds will
continue to support wind chills as low as -50 F, with the coldest
wind chills over the Kuskokwim Delta and the Nushagak River
Valley. Light snow currently over the Alaska Peninsula will
continue today and then spread north as a weak deformation band
tonight and Thursday morning across the Lower Kuskokwim Valley
southward to the eastern portion of the Alaska Peninsula.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

Bering Sea weather continues to be dominated by a strong upper
level arctic trough and strong northerly winds. Instability driven
snow showers continues over the Eastern Aleutians, and the winter
weather advisory will continue into the early evening for the
southern Alaska Peninsula. Thereafter, the upper trough weakens
and shifts east, which will allow for weakening snow showers
although snow squalls will continue through Thursday night. A
trough of low pressure will develop over the western half of the
Bering/Aleutians tonight and will only move slowly through Friday
morning. Winds will shift to westerly over the Aleutian Chain,
which will result in slowly warming temps along with widespread
snow showers.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5...Friday through Sunday)
Gulf of Alaska: Persistent low pressure is expected to remain in
the Gulf through Saturday. While the easterly winds along the
northern Gulf coast will taper, strong northwesterly flow will
persist through the usual gaps and passes, especially over
Kamishak Bay and Wide Bay south of Kodiak Island through Saturday.
By Saturday night, a strong front enters the western Gulf. Gales
are likely with this front, and storm force winds are possible.

Bering Sea and Aleutians: Gusty northerly flow will taper over the
eastern Bering by Friday morning. A weak low in the northern
Bering may spread some gales in over the Pribilof Islands and
northward as it lifts to the north and exits the Bering by
Saturday morning. Attention shifts to a strong ~960 mb low moving
over the western Aleutians Saturday morning. Gales are expected,
though there is increasing confidence in storm force winds with
this system. Models have not settled on the track of this low,
though it is likely to impact the Bering through early next week.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7...Saturday through Tuesday)
The persistent upper level trough that has been in place over the
Gulf will eventually shift eastward as an upper level ridge
approaches Saturday. There is increasing confidence in a strong
area of low pressure entering the Bering/western Aleutians
Saturday morning. Models are hinting at a sharp temperature
gradient forming over the Bering late Saturday into Sunday, which
could potentially fuel the development of several additional areas
of low pressure. Depending on if these lows form, and where they
track, there remains potential for a pattern change across
southern Alaska for early next week as warmer southerly flow
advances eastward.
