The front is forecast to race southward through eastern NM during the morning, pushing westward into the Rio Grande Valley and points west during the late morning through early afternoon. Very strong to high east canyon winds are forecast for KABQ with east wind gusts approaching 50kt possible during the early afternoon. Widespread upslope stratus clouds will rapidly develop from the east slopes of the central mountain chain eastward during the late morning with areas of MVFR cigs likely by 08/18Z. Clouds will start to lower during the afternoon with areas of IFR cigs likely developing late Tuesday afternoon east of the central mountain chain. Major changes are still on track starting late tonight. A potent storm system and associated cold front will impact the state through Thursday. Precipitation chances increase for northeastern New Mexico tonight before becoming more widespread Tuesday into Thursday. Rain will likely changeover to snow for the northern mountains, central highlands, and northeastern plains Tuesday night with snow accumulations possible over mountain peaks and grassy or elevated surfaces. An early season freeze is also still expected for portions of northern New Mexico Wednesday morning. Precipitation will gradually taper off west to east on Thursday. Conditions will then gradually warm as drier weather settles in for the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY)... A dynamic clipper system is briskly diving south out of Alberta, and is currently making its way into ID/WY. This is displacing the dome of high pressure that recently took up residence over the American Southwest, and pressure heights have been decreasing slightly over NM and surrounding areas. Despite this, temperatures are soaring above average again, and several more longstanding record highs will surely fall again before dusk. Drier air is infiltrating more of the northwestern half of NM, impeding convective initiation. A few anemic storms cannot be ruled out along a surface convergence area east of the central mountain chain (from a Ruidoso to Santa Rosa to Clayton line), but any cells would be short-lived with minimal footprints of rain. Winds will gradually decrease in most zones tonight, however the east central plains may be a bit more stubborn. Winds in northeastern NM will abruptly change direction (likely after 3 am MDT) as the backdoor segment of the cold front surges in with potent pressure rises and an immense surface gradient building in. These winds will therefore gain speed into the afternoon Tuesday, and have opted to upgrade the High Wind Watch to a Warning to account for this. By noon tomorrow, the upper low will be near northwest of the Four Corners, as it looks like model consensus is carrying the feature on the earlier-speculated westward track. The mid level temperatures have modified a bit, but 500 mb values are still advertised to be near -16 to -20 C in its core. The backdoor segment of the front will likely spill into the middle to upper Rio Grande valley of NM by noon Tuesday while the more traditional segment will be infiltrating the northwestern quadrant of the state. Precipitation stretching from the Estancia valley northeastward to the far corner of the state will be tricky early Wednesday morning with forecast soundings indicating high potential for freezing rain and/or sleet, and a freeze watch will also be hoisted for these zones for this time frame. Nailing down the specifics of precipitation coverage and intensity will be difficult for Wednesday, as the low will not track much distance, and pinwheeling vorticity lobes could bring short, but vigorous, enhancements to the already dynamic and diffluent flow over much of NM. The gap/canyon winds will continue to howl through this time frame with the surface gradient sluggishly relaxing very late in the day. LONG TERM...(WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY)... Models are continuing to trend the H5 low farther south and west and are also slowing down its ejection onto the Great Plains. By Wednesday night, the ~562dm closed low looks to be just west of the Four Corners area before it finally starts to lift into northwest CO Thursday. The low will be slow to eject onto the Great Plains with continued significant model differences still making this a tough forecast. With increased moisture and favorable upper-level dynamics still in play, widespread precipitation will continue into Wednesday night and through the day Thursday. As 700mb temperatures gradually warm, the window for snow will likely be closing Wednesday night aside from light snow across northern mountain peaks. Wind speeds will also be tapering off Wednesday night with the exception of the east canyon winds. Current forecast has wind gusts of 30-35mph at the ABQ Sunport and east side of ABQ, but with a tight pressure gradient still in place across central NM ahead of the closed low, wouldn't be surprised to see those speeds continue to increase in later packages. Widespread precipitation tapers off from west to east Thursday night. Temperatures continue to warm on Friday, and aside from lingering showers, drier conditions will start settling in. The H5 high makes its return over the Great Basin this weekend with warmer, drier conditions continuing. Fortunately, temperatures look to remain near September normals. Return flow could keep showers and storms in the forecast for eastern and southern NM, but coverage looks to be isolated at the moment. 52/15 && .FIRE WEATHER... Not to sound like a broken record, but we will likely see more high temperature records set again this afternoon. As previously advertised, drier air has expanded over more of the northwestern half of NM today, further lowering RH and minimizing thunderstorm potential. A couple hours of critical fire weather conditions will continue in the northwestern quadrant of NM and also the east central plains through late this afternoon, but this threat will subside toward sunset. Thunderstorm prospects are low, but a stray cell or two is possible east of the central mountain chain through the evening as well. The weather pattern dramatically resets itself Tuesday through Wednesday as the potent disturbance aloft and its surface cold front race into NM. Winds will crank up in northeastern NM early in the morning, turning more widespread into Tuesday afternoon. The northeast to east central plains will observe the strongest speeds of 50 to 60 mph initially, but these will then spill into the middle Rio Grande valley. Ahead of the western segment of the front in western NM, warm, dry, and unstable conditions will precede the front, but temperatures will quickly plummet late Tuesday as the surface boundary races southward. Precipitation chances will ramp upward through the day Tuesday, especially over the northern and eastern tiers of NM. Precipitation will then expand over more of the state Tuesday night into Wednesday with light to moderate snow accumulations over the northern mountains and light snow or freezing rain also impacting parts of central to northeastern NM. Breezy to windy conditions will not subside until late Wednesday or Wednesday night. Wetting precipitation may be slow to exit NM due to a slower progression of the culprit upper low, but a trend toward somewhat drier conditions is expected Friday and more-so into the weekend as temperatures return to more seasonable readings. 52 && .ABQ WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
