Area forecast discussion, Apr 7, 9:13 PM PDT, 5 hours 46 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 913 PM PDT Sun Apr 7 2019 .SYNOPSIS... Much warmer temperatures are expected on Monday, with Las Vegas and Death Valley making a run at their first 90 and 100 degree readings of the season, respectively. The next weather system will bring strong winds and much cooler temperatures to much of the region Tuesday and Wednesday. && .UPDATE...High pressure will continue over the area tonight with periods of high clouds passing across the region. The forecast looks in good shape and no updates are needed at this time. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...328 PM PDT... .DISCUSSION...Today through Saturday. A ridge of high pressure will remain over the area through tomorrow allowing for dry conditions and a dramatic warming trend as southwest flow increases. Temps will rise 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal norms creating our first chance so far this year at a 90 degree high temperature for Vegas and 100 degree temp for Death Valley. A drastic weather pattern change will occur on Tuesday as a Pacific trough digs down from the PacNW across the Great Basin pushing a strong, sfc cold front through the local area. Any precipitation with this system will be limited to the southern Great Basin, Sierra, and AZ Strip with low-end accumulations expected. Increasing instability will be present over Lincoln County Tuesday afternoon along the frontal boundary and isolated thunderstorms will be possible through early evening. The most notable impacts from this system will come in the form of winds across the region as well as noticeably cooler temperatures behind this system. A strong band of pre-frontal west to southwest winds will develop early Tuesday afternoon stretching across San Bernardino, southern Clark, and Mohave counties. As the cold front pushes into the southern Great Basin, strong, northerly winds will follow. As this boundary continues to push southward throughout the day the gradient along the front will tighten significantly with the addition of peak heating which will strengthen winds on both sides of the boundary. Have added most of the remaining zones to the High Wind Watch; leaving out only the Colorado River Valley and higher elevations of Inyo County where the threat of a high wind event appears to be lower. The timing of the watch remains the same; beginning Tuesday afternoon and ending late Tuesday night for the Mojave Desert and continuing through Wednesday evening across southern Great Basin. On Wednesday, the trough will push east of the Rockies with mean-layer troughing remaining over the western U.S. allowing for continued strong, north winds and below normal temps. Temps will drop from 10-15 degrees above normal on Monday to around 5 degrees below normal for Wednesday and Thursday which will definitely be a noticable change for most. By late this week, the next wave will push southward across the Great Basin on the western extent of the prevailing longwave trough. Winds are not expected to be as strong with this system. However, chances for showers could spread further south across the Mojave Desert. There are still discrepancies between long term models late in the week with the handling of this system and the extent of the precip and reinforcing shot of cooler air so confidence is still low in the end of the forecast. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds will generally favor a diurnal southwest direction overnight. After sunrise Monday morning, light easterly winds will again prevail through late afternoon when winds take on a more southerly component. BKN high clouds expected through the remainder of the TAF period. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Light and diurnal winds expected across the southern Nevada TAF sites tonight. However, northerly winds around 10 kts expected to impact the Colorado River Valley sites through the remainder of the evening before diminishing overnight. Across the forecast area, high BKN clouds will last through the TAF period. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && UPDATE...Salmen DISCUSSION...Guillet AVIATION....Varian For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: http://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
