Boaters in the Wind Advisory area should use extreme caution when
venturing onto lakes. If you venture out onto the lakes... avoid 
the open water and stay close to shore or in protected coves and

.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will peak about 10 to 15 degrees above
normal today then a fast moving cold front will bring strong winds
and much cooler temperatures to most of the region Tuesday and
Wednesday. Another low pressure system is forecast to drop over the
region Friday keeping temperatures below normal. A warming trend
will occur for the weekend with breezy conditions Sunday.

.UPDATE...
A broad-scale ridge remains in place over the Desert Southwest
today. High clouds will continue to spill over the ridge but with
southwest winds supporting low-level mixing we should still be able
to get temps up in the vicinity of 90 degrees for Vegas and 100
degrees for Death Valley this afternoon. Going into tonight the next
incoming trough will push onshore and initiate light activity over
the southern Sierra going into early tomorrow morning. No
significant updates needs to the near term forecast.

.DISCUSSION...Today through next Monday.

Temperatures will climb about 3-5 degrees across the region today to
peak about 10-15 degrees above normal under a broad ridge of high
pressure. Still looking for close to 90 degrees in Las Vegas and 100
in Death Valley. Considerable high clouds will stream through the
ridge which will slightly inhibit temperatures from reaching their
full potential. A dramatic change in the weather will then occur as
a fast moving trough swings into Northern California tonight then
dives down through Southern Nevada Tuesday afternoon and evening.
This will produce widespread strong winds across both ahead of and
behind the associated cold front which is forecast to sweep through
southern Nevada late Tuesday afternoon. The speed of the upper level
trough and the thermal gradient during peak daytime heating will
enhance the potential for extensive gusts over 60 mph. The High Wind
Watch will remain in effect for most of the region. A Wind Advisory
was also issued for the Colorado River Valley Tuesday afternoon and
evening where gusts over 40 mph will be likely. Scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms can also be expected with the passing
front primarily over Lincoln County Tuesday afternoon. Gusty
northwest winds will persist behind the exiting system Wednesday.

A brief break between systems will occur Thursday then closed upper
low is forecast to drop out of the Pacific Northwest into Southern
California/Nevada Friday and Friday night then it pulls away across
southern Arizona Saturday. A mean trough is forecast to remain over
the region over the weekend and early next week with possible
disturbances moving through to stir up winds at times. This pattern
will keep temperatures on a bit of roller coaster with readings
dropping several degrees below normal Wednesday through Friday with
highs only in the 60s to lower 70s across the Mojave Desert zones.
Temps will rebound to near normal over the weekend and early next
week.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds will continue through
the morning. By midmorning, light easterly winds will return for a
brief period before they become more southeast in the afternoon. By
late afternoon and this evening, south to southwest winds will
develop and should slowly increase. Gusts 15-20kts are likely for a
brief period before sunset. After that, low confidence that gusts
will continue through the night, so dropped them in the current TAF
forecast. If they did continue, 20-25kts gusts can be expected.
Either way, south to southwest winds over 10kts are likely over
night.

By Tuesday morning, winds will rapidly increase out of the southeast
ahead of an approaching cold front. High confidence that gusts will
quickly develop mid Tuesday morning, but lower confidence in speeds.
Likely gusts over 25kts for 15-18Z, with higher gusts possible.
Strong winds are expected by Tuesday afternoon, with gusts up to
40kts possible.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Light winds will begin to increase today across the
region ahead of the next system moving through on Tuesday. Generally
south to southwest winds can be expected with occasional gusts to
20kts possible. Winds will remain at or above 10kts overnight, with
gusts likely continuing at DAG out of the west. Strong winds are
expected on Tuesday, with widespread gusts 30-40kts expected Tuesday
afternoon. Across the forecast area, high BKN clouds will last
through the TAF period.

much of the region Tuesday afternoon and evening. Spotters are
encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to
