increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do
is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and
water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in
the event of a power outage.

.SYNOPSIS...

A major change in the weather is coming as a strong cold front
barrels through the region bringing strong gusty winds, mountain
snow and valley rain. Freezes at night are likely this weekend
into early next week, with cool weather continuing through much of
next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

* Winds are increasing across the region this afternoon with gusts
  around 30-40 mph. Lake wind advisories remain in effect for
  Tahoe and Pyramid. We have extended the lake wind advisories for
  Tahoe and Pyramid into Saturday, as the gusty winds will
  continue to create choppy and hazardous boating conditions. We
  have seen a better signal for strong winds on Saturday
  especially for those areas south of Highway 50 where we could
  see widespread gusts 50+ mph. Strong winds will also bring
  elevated fire weather conditions for these areas, mainly for
  Mono and Mineral Counties. Please see the Fire Weather Section
  below for additional details on Red Flag Warnings and fire
  danger.

* The weather pattern will shift drastically tomorrow into "winter
  mode" as this cold front barges in. Temperatures tomorrow will
  be much, much colder--nearly 40 degrees colder than what we saw
  yesterday! Yesterday we hit 91 degrees in Reno, but tomorrow we
  will struggle to creep into the low 50s across western Nevada.
  Abundant cloud cover, precipitation, and breezy winds will be
  pushing in with the front Saturday afternoon as well, which will
  keep temperatures even lower and make it feel downright
  blustery.

* Fun facts...The record lowest high temperature recorded for the
  Reno- Tahoe Airport for September 28th is 53 degrees set back in
  1905. This is a long-term record that has a very real
  possibility of falling tomorrow. These temperatures we will be
  feeling this weekend are typical for mid/late November.

* Snow levels will come down tomorrow afternoon to near 5500-6500
  feet. This will bring accumulating snows at pass level around
  Lake Tahoe, especially late in the afternoon and in the evening
  when the sun begins to set. Snow amounts aren't anything
  blockbuster for this storm, especially by Sierra standards. But,
  nonetheless mountain conditions will be slick with snow around
  the Tahoe Basin and High Sierra passes from Yuba Pass in the
  north all the way down to Sonora Pass in the south. Snow amounts
  around Lake Tahoe level will be minimal, around an inch or so.
  Winter weather advisory is in effect for Saturday afternoon and
  evening.

* We also issued a Winter Storm Watch for Lassen, eastern Plumas,
  and eastern Sierra counties for Sunday evening through Monday
  morning. A secondary band of snow will develop over the northern
  Sierra and southern Cascades/Modoc Plateau late Sunday and
  remain in place through Monday morning. Snow levels will be all
  the way down to around 4500ft by this time, leading to several
  inches of snow above 5000ft, mainly north and west of
  Susanville.

* Freeze watches have also been issued across many locations in
  northeastern CA and western Nevada starting Saturday night and
  going through Tuesday morning. These below normal temperatures
  will lead to widespread freezing temperatures in the populated
  and agricultural valleys. Please pass along the message to your
  friends and neighbors that it would be a good time to harvest
  the tomatoes and think about draining the irrigation sprinkler
  systems. At a minimum any exposed above ground water pipes
  should be wrapped or drained to protect them from freezing.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next week...

No major changes were made to the extended forecast. Lingering
moisture will pull away from the region as the trough exits. The
bigger concern will be continued seasonably cold temperatures as
overnight lows remain 20-25 degrees below climatology. Widespread
freezes are possible and a Freeze Watch for temperatures below 30
degrees has been issued for Monday night.

Otherwise, models favor a migratory ridge to track slowly through
the region allowing for a warming trend through the end of the week.
Temperatures will warm back to around 70 degrees for western Nevada
and to around 60 degrees for Sierra valleys by Thursday. Overnight
lows will also moderate into the mid 30s for western Nevada and mid
20s for Sierra valleys over the same time frame.

Late in the week, models are suggesting another trough moving into
the Pacific Northwest. Currently, only a slight wind increase has
been forecast for this feature by the end of the week. Some models,
like the NBM, are showing some potential for showers along the
Oregon border, but deterministic solutions are much slower with the

.AVIATION...

Winds are rising along the Sierra and Sierra Front today with
turbulence evident in cloud elements and PIREPS. These gusty
conditions will continue into Saturday as a strong cold front moves
into the region. In fact, winds will get stronger along the Sierra
Front south of Highway 50. KMMH could see gusts as high as 50kts.
LLWS and crosswinds will also be an issue for area terminals,
especially just ahead and along the frontal boundary Saturday
morning.

Moisture and precipitation will also accompany this system bringing
widespread mountain obscurations, mountain snows, and possibly mixed
rain and snow for Sierra Front terminals. MVFR conditions will
likely be widespread with IFR possible for KTRK, KTVL, and KMMH.
Precipitation will start as rain early Saturday before transitioning
to snow above 5500 feet Saturday evening. Some models have Sierra
snow as early as Saturday afternoon as convective elements could
drag snow levels lower. Regardless, aviators should consider icing
potentials as snow levels lower.

Temperatures trend much colder by Sunday with potential for more
snowfall Sunday and Sunday night mainly in the Sierra. It's not out
of the question that some flakes could fall at KRNO/KCXP/KRTS Sunday
night, but precipitation amounts will be small. Boyd

.FIRE WEATHER...

A Red Flag Warning has been raised for Mono County, Southern Lyon
County, and Mineral County for Saturday. Winds will be quite strong
with gusts exceeding 45 mph for 6-12 hours, from 11 am to 11 pm,
Saturday. These winds, coupled with near critical fuels, are the
driving factors for the issuance. However, there is also a brief
period where RH could be critical as well exacerbating the critical
fire weather threat for Saturday.

Colder temperatures, with rising RH, and slower wind speeds will
mitigate this threat by Saturday night into Sunday. However,
conditions will remain a little gusty Sunday with flow switching
from westerly to northerly. Little to no precipitation is expected
to occur over the warned area; if any fires do start, winds on
Sunday will likely be able to carry fire effectively even with
