.SYNOPSIS...

Strong cold front moves through the region today bringing strong
gusty winds, mountain snow and valley rain. Freezing overnight
temperatures are likely this weekend into early next week, with
cool weather continuing through much of next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

Classic, albeit a bit early, fall weather arrives here in the
Sierra and western Nevada today as a strong cold front comes
crashing through the region. No significant changes to the
forecast were made overnight. A plethora of advisory products are
in effect today where specific forecast details can be found
including; Red Flag Warnings, Wind Advisories, Snow Advisories
and Freeze Watches.

Confidence remains high in the overall forecast as the well
advertised strong cold front moves through the region throughout
the day today. The cold front is currently (3 am) around the
Oregon-California border near the coast and is expected to move
through the Reno/Tahoe area in mid afternoon, making it through
the southern end of the forecast area of Mono County by the late
evening hours.

Strong winds can be expected ahead of, and especially right along
the front, with gusts up to around 50 mph possible. The areas
that are expected to see the longest duration of winds are around
Mono/Mineral counties where wind advisories are in effect.

Brief heavy snowfall is expected along the front with snow levels
quickly dropping down to 5000-6000 feet. There isn't much
moisture available for this system, but strong forcing along the
front is expected to produce between 0.1-0.3" of precipitation
from about the Tahoe Basin north to around Quincy where the best
forcing exists. Forcing dissipates as the front continues through
the region with more showery conditions for most of the rest of
the area. A fair bit of uncertainty remains in how much snow will
be able to accumulate along the fast moving front, but a couple
inches of snow in the upper elevations with a dusting down as low
as the foothills still looks like the most reasonable outcome.

A lull in the precipitation is expected behind the front tonight
through early afternoon on Sunday, though light snow showers will
be possible area-wide as the cold front produces strong low level
instability.

A second round of precipitation is expected Sunday night, mainly
in NE California as the cold core of the low moves through.
Uncertainty remains a bit higher with the snowfall for this
aspect of the forecast since forcing will be weak, but it looks
like the best chance for snowfall accumulations will be around
Lassen County down to around I-80.

Freezing temperatures are expected for much of the region Sunday
night Sunday and Monday nights behind the cold front, which
reminds me I should probably shut off my sprinklers this morning.
A few snow showers could persist north of I-80 on Monday, but any
additional accumulations will be fairly light. -Zach

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next week...

No major changes were made to the extended forecast. Overall dry
conditions are expected with temperatures generally below average,
although some moderation toward seasonal averages is expected later
in the week.

Tuesday will remain on the cool side with highs mainly in the 50s to
near 60 degrees, as the back side of the upper low finally lifts out
of western NV. Wednesday will begin a slow warming trend, with highs
mainly in the 60s as a flat ridge moves over CA-NV.

By Thursday, another trough is projected to move quickly across the
Pacific Northwest, bringing some increase in winds across the
region, but gusts aren't expected to be that impressive, generally
in the 20-25 mph range. A few very light showers are possible near
the Oregon border and far northern Lassen County, but the best rain
chances should remain well north of the Oregon border. Temperatures
will continue warming for areas south of Susanville-Gerlach with
some valleys surpassing 70 degrees, while more widespread cloud
cover will keep highs nearly 10 degrees cooler north of Susanville-
Gerlach.

The end of next week and the first weekend of October look to be dry
with temperatures near seasonal averages (lower-mid 70s for
valleys/60s near the Sierra). A weak shortwave passage may bring
some passing cirrus clouds and a slight upward bump in wind speeds,
but at this time precipitation chances are low. MJD

.AVIATION...

Windy conditions will continue today, especially over Sierra ridges
and in areas south of US-50. Periods of LLWS will continue
especially through this morning, along and ahead of the cold front
as it moves south. Turbulent conditions with mountain wave activity,
and periods of gusty cross winds will be present for all main
terminals today, with the strongest overall winds likely at KMMH
this afternoon-evening.

Moisture and precipitation will also accompany this system with
widespread mountain obscurations. Expect MVFR conditions and
possible IFR for KTRK-KTVL this afternoon and evening, including
snow at times during heavier precip bursts. For western NV
terminals, periods of rain increase during the day with best
chances for MVFR CIGS/VIS between 20Z-01Z.

Cold temperatures continue through Sunday with potential for more
light snowfall Sunday and Sunday night mainly in the Sierra and
northeast CA. A few snowflakes could even mix in with rain showers
for some of the western NV terminals above the valley floors, such
as KRTS. Brisk west winds will keep areas of turbulence and
mountain wave activity going east of the Sierra, but overall speeds
are expected to be lower compared to today. MJD

.FIRE WEATHER...

No changes were made to the existing Red Flag Warning for Mono-
Mineral-southern Lyon Counties today. This is primarily a wind-
based warning along with dry vegetation, as these areas did not
receive much rainfall during the recent series of late September
storm systems. Humidity is less of a factor in determining critical
fire weather conditions when dealing with likely peak wind gusts
near 50 mph, but a short period of 10-15% RH values is still
possible in the warning areas, mainly east of US-395.

Colder temperatures, with rising RH, and reduced wind speeds will
mitigate this threat by tonight into Sunday. However, some areas
could still see gusts up to 35 mph, with RH values still bottoming
out around 15% south and east of a Crowley Lake-Mono Lake-Hawthorne
line Sunday afternoon. Little to no precipitation is expected to
occur over the warned area, so some elevated fire weather concerns
will continue.

Elsewhere across the region, fire weather issues are not expected as
humidity will be much higher behind today's cold front passage,
along with areas of wetting rain and higher elevation snowfall. MJD
