...Strong Cold Front Producing Very Windy Conditions...

.A powerful front is approaching eastern Idaho at this time and
should pass through during the evening hours tonight. As the
front approaches winds will increase, and as it passes, the wind
direction will shift to west. The very windy conditions will
continue through the night. There may be a 3 to 4 hour lull in
the very windy conditions during the morning hours on Friday, and
increase again in the late morning. The winds will continue into
Friday evening.

.UPDATE...First line of morning thunderstorms has passed through
the Snake River plain and is continuing eastward into the
highlands.

Much of the forecast area continues under a slight risk of severe
thunderstorms and tornadoes. For Fri, there is a small part of
Fremont county where excessive rainfall is at a marginal level of
risk.

Local wind study indicates solid chances of a Wind Advisory for
the Snake River plain and many of the zones south and east of that
area, except for Bear Lake. Will likely issue a Wind Advisory that
actually starts late tonight. 110kt-plus jet stream overhead and
700mb wind in excess of 35kt at one point will combine with strong
cold air advection and a moderate to strong SLP gradient to
continue the Wind Advisory conditions into the evening. A later
start to the strong wind in the highland zones, since it takes a
while for the 700mb wind to increase in those locations.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 255 AM MDT Thu Jun 6 2019/

SHORT TERM...Through Sunday. Myriad of impacts expected through
Sunday morning across the region as a vigorous upper trough and
associated strong cold front plow through the PacNW. Impacts
include severe thunderstorm potential, gusty gradient-driven
winds, near record or record cold (for Saturday daytime highs and
Sunday morning lows) as well as the potential for frost and
freezing Temperatures Sunday morning. We'll address each of these
impacts below.

Early morning Satellite and observational data revealed a closed
low and associated trough centered just off of the British
Columbia coast. This feature will progress eastward, dragging a
strong cold front across SE Idaho Thursday evening, with the front
exiting into Wyoming and Utah in the pre-dawn hours Friday
morning. As of this writing, moisture quality across SE Idaho is
poor, but observational data indicates moisture advection is
ongoing -- and will continue to pool ahead of the front across SE
Idaho today. As the low/trough approaches, mid-level winds will
increase and upper-level Temperatures will cool. We are noting
some light showers/isolated thunderstorms over NE Nevada early
this morning in association with the moisture transport -- and
those isolated showers may enter SE Idaho this morning. High-
resolution, convective-allowing models are largely in excellent
agreement with their handling of thunderstorm trends today, with
strong to severe thunderstorm development expected to initiate in
the 1-3PM timeframe across SE Idaho, with the thunderstorm
development tied to a pre-frontal trough expected to be draped
from NE-SW across the Snake Plain. Thunderstorms are then expected
to be ongoing through the afternoon and early evening, with the
severe threat diminishing around 9PM. Sufficient moisture, wind
shear and stout instability will promote strong to severe
thunderstorms, with supercells and thunderstorm clusters with
bowing segments expected. Low-level thermodynamic profiles will
support strong thunderstorm downdrafts and outflow winds, while
cooling aloft will support large hail potential. These will be the
main threats. The tornado potential is overall low due to the
lack of low-level wind shear, however the potential is not zero as
pockets of low- level vorticity could allow for a brief spin-up.
Areas from the Snake Plain east to the Wyoming border are favored
for strong to severe thunderstorm development.

As the cold front marches east, a second round of strong
thunderstorms are expected to break out across the eastern
highlands, mainly east of the I-15 corridor after midnight.
Meanwhile, a band of frontal- induced stratiform Precipitation is
expected to break out across the Central Mountains after Midnight
tonight, and with cold air advection well underway, snow levels
will crash to near 7000 feet elevation by sunrise Friday morning.
Along with that cold advection will be gusty winds, with 20-30 mph
winds along with higher gusts expected through the day Friday.
This along with rapidly falling Temperatures will combine for an
early April feel, as Temperatures likely struggle to get out of
the upper 50s/low 60s across the Snake Plain. Scattered showers
are also expected through the day. These will turn to snow across
the Central Mountains and Continental Divide, where light
accumulations are expected.

The cold air will be well in place across the region by Saturday,
with highs quite possibly not getting out of the 50s across the
Snake Plain and eastern Magic Valley. 700mb Temperatures are
forecast to be colder than any other time in climatology for
northern portions of our area, and this may lead to record or
near record cold high Temperatures for the date. In terms of
Precipitation, the main trough axis will be passing overhead, and
as such isolated to scattered showers are expected by afternoon
across the Central Mountains, upper Snake Plain and eastern
Highlands, with small Hail and gusty winds possible.

Frost and/or freezing Temperatures possible Sunday morning, with
all areas outside of the Snake Plain forecast to fall below
freezing. New guidance is trending even colder, so lowered
forecast mins 3-5 degrees. With this adjustment, we're now
forecasting lows around freezing for the Upper Snake Plain
transitioning to just above freezing across the Eastern Magic
Valley. Sensitive vegetation may be prone to damage due to the
potential freezing Temperatures. AD

LONG TERM...Sunday night through next Thursday. A ridge of high
pressure builds across the west Monday and Tuesday providing dry and
stable conditions across the region. By Wednesday afternoon, both
the GFS and ECMWF are hinting that some moisture will work into the
CNTRL Idaho mountains resulting in a weak threat of isolated
thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening favoring the higher
terrain from Mackay to Dillon. By Thursday, the ridge breaks down as
a Pacific disturbance works into WRN Canada opening the door to
scattered showers and thunderstorms favoring the higher terrain in
the afternoon and evening hours once again. Temps run near normal
Monday and then warm Tuesday through Thursday. Huston

AVIATION...A vigorous upper trough will advance into the NW states
today and tonight supporting strong thunderstorm development across
SE Idaho ahead of the system this afternoon and evening. Model time
sections support widespread VFR conditions until the end of the
forecast period when low VFR or even MVFR CIGS begin to spread
across the region as the upper low makes its way east through
Canada. Gusty winds are anticipated today increasing for Friday.

FIRE WEATHER...A vigorous low pressure system will advance into the
NW states today and then work east through SRN Canada Tonight and
Friday. Strong thunderstorm development will likely work east
through the region this afternoon and evening ahead of an intense
cold front which will sweep east through the area sometime this
evening. Colder temperatures and strong west winds will follow
Friday as snow levels drop to around 6000 ft MSL across the CNTRL
mountains in the afternoon. Unsettled and cool conditions continue
through Saturday as the low continues to work east through Canada.
Sunday morning should prove to be the coolest with near record
temperatures possible in many areas. Warmer and drier conditions
follow Monday through Wednesday as a ridge of high pressure builds
across the region. Huston

HYDROLOGY...Big Wood River, Big Lost River, and other Central
Idaho creeks and rivers are slowly increasing, many of them
towards bankfull. The Big Wood River in Hailey continues in minor
Flood Stage, but with the much colder temperatures arriving Fri
night, snow melt will subside and will give the creeks and rivers
still dealing with snow pack time to respond and decrease. The Big
Lost at Howell Creek Ranch has reached minor flood stage and is
forecast to oscillate near this value through Friday, and thus a
a Flood Advisory remains here. Non-forecast point locations in
this region will also have to be monitored for additional areas to
be Warned or Advised. The Henrys Fork stretch around Rexburg is
also being monitored for approaching minor flood stage, possibly
by Sun. Much depends on releases from Island Park Reservoir, so
have held off on any Watch. Messick

At 1139 AM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking thunderstorms from near
Saint Charles south to near Laketown, moving northeast at 35 mph.

Frequent lightning and winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with
these storms.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

If on or near Bear Lake, get out of the water and move indoors or
inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles
from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close

...LIGHTNING...SMALL HAIL AND GUSTY WINDS APPROACHING AMERICAN
FALLS RESERVOIR AND LAKE WALCOTT...

At 1253 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a line of strong
thunderstorms extending from near Yale to just west of American
Falls, moving northeast at 30 mph.

Hail up to around one half inch, winds over 30 mph and lightning
will be possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include...
American Falls, Neeley, American Falls Reservoir, Lake Walcott,
Aberdeen, Cold Water Rest Area, Pocatello Airport, Sterling, Yale
Rest Area, Pilar Butte, Idahome and Massacre Rocks.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead
to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

If on or near American Falls Reservoir or Lake Walcott, get out of
the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning
can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can
hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move
to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
