Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1249 AM EST Sun Feb 10 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure located around Lake Michigan this afternoon will build southeastward with its center passing off the Middle Atlantic coast on Sunday. A cold front approaching from the north is expected to arrive on Sunday night. Arctic high pressure is forecast to settle in Quebec for Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, low pressure is anticipated to move from the southern Great Plains to the Great Lakes. A secondary low is expected to develop in Virginia on Tuesday before both systems lift to the northeast. High pressure should follow for Wednesday and Thursday. Another complex low approaching from the west is forecast to affect our region on Friday and Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Nocturnal radiational cooling is allowing for temperatures to drop into the teens now in the Pine Barrens and rural/valley locations northwest of the Fall Line. Expect a continued steady drop in temperatures the rest of the night, with lows likely in the lower to mid teens in these areas and possibly below 10 in the Poconos. Hourly temperatures are doing mostly OK at this time, though the typically colder sites (MJX, 22N, 12N, and MIV) may end up still being a little too warm. Lack of snow cover and the position of the strong surface high just to our west are likely preventing temperatures from dropping as low as the coldest statistical guidance had forecast, however. The surface high will move slowly offshore today, as a midlevel perturbation moves into the northern Mid-Atlantic this afternoon. Warm advection will commence, allowing for a fairly rapid increase in cloud cover late in the day (likely stunting warming to a degree, especially west of the metro). Stronger ascent will remain well to the west during the day, so no precipitation is expected prior to sunset across the CWA. The proximity of the surface highs should keep winds rather light, but directions should trend to a southwest direction by afternoon. Used a blend of statistical and raw guidance for highs today, with most of the models in reasonable agreement. This results in temperatures ranging from around 30 in the Poconos to the upper 30s to low 40s in the urban corridor southeastward. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/... High pressure will quickly move offshore on Sunday. As this occurs, low-level warm advection will initiate across the Mid- Atlantic and lead to rapidly increasing cloud cover during the afternoon. Temperatures will be slightly warmer across the area Sunday vs. today, but the warming will be hampered by the clouds. For the grids, I have highs around 30 across the Southern Poconos and in the middle 30s to around 40 elsewhere, the warmest spot being Sussex County, DE. No precipitation is expected through Sunset. Winds will back to the southwest at 10 mph or less. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... We are looking at a fairly active weather period from Sunday night through Saturday, with three wintry precipitation events anticipated. As high pressure moves farther off the coast, a cold front from the north is anticipated to drop into our region on Sunday night. Meanwhile, a mid level short wave trough and an associated weak surface wave of low pressure are expected from the west. The weather systems are forecast to bring a light wintry mix to our region. Based on the forecast temperature profiles, the precipitation type should be mainly snow in eastern Pennsylvania and northern and central New Jersey, and a mix across much of northeastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey. It continues to appears as though the greatest potential for precipitation will be across the southern half of our forecast area, with the possibility that the precipitation could miss far northern New Jersey entirely. Snowfall amounts around an inch to an inch and a half are possible, mainly from southeastern Pennsylvania, extreme northeastern Maryland and northern Delaware into southern New Jersey. A light glaze of ice may occur in northeastern Maryland, Delaware, southern New Jersey and far southeastern Pennsylvania. There should be little break between the first system and the second one. The break should run from late Monday morning into early Monday afternoon before the next batch of precipitation begins to overspread our region from the southwest. We are anticipating an initial shot of precipitation under an area of isentropic lift on Monday evening, with the more substantial precipitation event from late Monday night into Tuesday evening. Low pressure is expected to move from the southern Great Plains to the Great Lakes on Monday and Tuesday with a secondary low developing in Virginia on Tuesday. The precipitation type forecast remains quite complex. Arctic high pressure should located in Quebec at that time and we are forecast to be on the southern fringe of that air mass. Meanwhile, relatively warm air will be draw over the low level cold air resulting in a transition from snow to ice to rain. Unfortunately, surface temperatures may not warm enough in parts of eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey to allow for the full change to liquid precipitation and there is the potential for a significant ice accumulation in our area north of the Interstate 78 Corridor. Snow totals of several inches are possible in our northern counties, with little snow expected in southern Delaware and far southern New Jersey before the change-over. By Tuesday evening, the main surface low is forecast to be located in Michigan with a secondary low in our vicinity. Both should lift to the northeast with the precipitation coming to an end on Tuesday night. High pressure is anticipated to nose up from the southwest and south for Wednesday and Thursday, bringing us a break from the precipitation. A similar pattern to that of Monday through Tuesday night is expected for the period from Thursday night through Saturday. Surface low pressure is expected to move from the southern Great Plains to the Great Lakes with a secondary low developing around Virginia. The biggest difference with the system will be the lack of a substantial arctic high to our north and northeast. As a result, it may be mostly rain in our area with perhaps some freezing rain early in the event in our northern counties. && .AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
