.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will slide off the Middle Atlantic coast today. A
wave of low pressure will slide eastward as a stronger area of
low pressure begins to eject out of the Rockies onto the Great
Plains. Wintry weather is expected to move into the region
Sunday night and Monday morning, bringing a light accumulation
of snow to portions of the area. More wintry precipitation will
move into the area as the stronger complex low moves toward the
Great Lakes Monday night. A secondary low is forecast to develop
along the mid- Atlantic coast Tuesday and move northeast,
eventually merging with the main low well to our north on
Thursday. Yet another complex storm system is forecast to move
toward the region by the end of the workweek.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure located in the Chesapeake Bay region at mid
morning will drift off the coast today. We will continue to
experience dry weather and seasonable temperatures with a light
wind.

We are expecting an increase in high clouds from the west this
afternoon, ahead of our next weather system.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A one-two wintry punch is expected for our area through the
period.

The first will begin tonight, as a weak perturbation moves
through the northern Mid-Atlantic. The system will be weak and
fairly moisture-starved, but the antecedent cold air in the low
levels and quite decent lift will be sufficient for a period of
light snow overnight into Monday morning. Models are,
unfortunately, still all over the place regarding
magnitude/placement of QPF/snow amounts and low-level thermal
profiles. The GFS continues to look the weakest, with mostly
rain central/southern Delmarva and meager-looking snow to the
north. It is beginning to look more like an outlier now (with
only modest support from the ICON, though the 06z HRRR certainly
gives me some pause), and its warm bias looks to be in full
force. The 00z NAM, meanwhile, provides a veritable winter storm
along/south of the I-76 corridor, which is rather unlikely
given the overall character/speed of the associated perturbation
and attendant lift. (Notably, the 06z NAM is a little tamer.)
The NAM Nest, RGEM, FV3, CMC, and ECMWF provide a reasonable
consensus cluster, with a fairly broad region of 1-2 inch snows
expected from (roughly) the I-78 corridor southward to central
Delmarva, tapering off to the south as low- level temperatures
approach/exceed freezing for much or most of the event. Locally
higher snow totals are possible in nearly-impossible-to-
forecast steadier/narrow bands within the main precipitation
shield. There are hints of such an axis occurring near a
Wilmington to Ocean City line, but that is of quite low
confidence at this point. Should such trends continue in
subsequent model runs, some increase in totals may occur within
the advisory area.

Adding to the complicated forecast is the potential for some
mixing, especially in Delmarva and far southern New Jersey. As
warm advection will be playing a primary role in generating the
lift for the precipitation, some semblance of a warm nose will
develop and progress northward atop the colder air. Models are
in disagreement as to its resultant impacts on precipitation
type, with the NAM and NAM Nest indicating some potential for
freezing rain in Delmarva and adjacent far southern New Jersey.
The RGEM produces little of this, and other models nothing at
all. Such mixed precipitation could occur as far south as our
southern CWA border, so expansion of the advisory southward may
be required in subsequent forecasts.

Even if amounts do not meet advisory criteria (two inches), the
timing is quite concerning. With overnight snow, the Monday
morning rush could be quite problematic within the advisory
area. This was the main impetus for advisory issuance, with
forecast snow/ice totals a secondary factor.

As the perturbation moves offshore Monday morning,
precipitation should become lighter but may not completely stop,
especially south of the Philly metro. However, given the slight
warming expected during the day and downward trend in
precipitation, felt an end time of noon for the advisory was
warranted. Critically, the second round of wintry weather begins
by Monday evening, so there will be little "down time" between
the events.

A strong surface low will develop in the central plains/Midwest
by Tuesday morning, with a zonally-oriented baroclinic zone
extending to the central Mid-Atlantic coast. Isentropic lift
atop and poleward of the baroclinic zone should allow for
broadening/increasing precipitation Monday night and Tuesday
across the area. A key feature for this portion of the event is
a building high in southeast Canada and adjacent New England,
which will likely keep near-surface cold air stubbornly in place
most of Monday night before its retreat as the surface low
lifts toward the Great Lakes on Tuesday.

This setup will be favorable for a wide variety of
precipitation types in our area, from snow on the north side of
the precipitation shield to a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain,
and rain farther south. The transition from snow to
sleet/freezing rain to rain will be from southwest to northeast
and will likely be at least somewhat slower than model progs,
owing to their general tendency to scour near-surface cold air
too quickly. NAM BUFKIT soundings Monday night and Tuesday
morning are indicative of a lengthy period of sleet north of
I-76, with at least some duration of freezing rain thereafter
before profiles become warm enough for all rain as the day wears
on. North of I-78 (and especially north of I-80), the cold air
will linger much of the day, which spells trouble. This could be
a lengthy period of sleet/freezing rain, with a healthy dose of
icing possible. Did not go nuts with the forecast yet,
particularly given the poor agreement model-to-model on thermal
profiles and precipitation type transition. Nevertheless, will
need to watch areas northwest of the Fall Line (in particular)
for significant icing potential. Of course, preceding this will
be a healthy period of snow/sleet, which could lead to
accumulations of advisory-to-warning levels in much of the same
region. Impacts could be felt as far southeast as the urban
corridor, though amounts of snow/sleet/freezing rain should
trend downward to the southeast. For Delmarva and southern New
Jersey, this portion of the event should be primarily rain.

QPF with this second phase looks formidable, and in places
where precipitation is mostly rain, there looks to be at least
some risk of flooding too. A solid 1-2 inches of liquid-
equivalent precipitation looks probable for much of the area
between tonight and Tuesday night, so hydro concerns are
certainly present as well. The WPC has placed much of the area
in a marginal risk of excessive rainfall for this portion of the
event. Of particular interest is a rather convective-looking
end to the event Tuesday evening/night, with rain rates high
enough to be fairly problematic quickly during this time frame.

Precipitation looks to move out quickly by daybreak Wednesday
as the low (and its secondary development along/near the coast)
continues its trek northeastward.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview...The progressive, active weather pattern continues
into the middle and end of next week, though we will get a break
the second half of Wednesday into Thursday. A similar strong
area of low pressure looks to affect most of the country as it
marches eastward into the end of next week. Similar to the storm
system Monday night and Tuesday, a deep mid-level trough will
aid in the formation of a rather significant surface low
pressure system that will move toward the mid-Atlantic by
Friday.

Wednesday starts off busy as the second storm system continues
to move off to the northeast out of our area. At this point, it
looks like the only remaining issues will be wrap-around rain
and snow showers behind the surface low as it pulls off to the
northeast. These should tend to be confined to the Lehigh
Valley, Poconos, and northwest New Jersey. The lack of artic air
behind the storm system means we don't cool down all the much
and highs will range from the low to mid 40s across much of the
area, with the exception of the Poconos, where highs will sit in
the upper 30s. By Wednesday night, these will move off to the
northeast, with most of the area experiencing a clear night.
This will result in additional radiational cooling, so lows
should be below freezing across the forecast area.

Thursday looks to be the quietest and driest day of the long
term and, perhaps, entire week as we sit between storm systems
with a surface high moving across the Southeast. Highs look to
range from the upper 30s across the Poconos to near 50 across
southern Delaware.

The next storm system moves into the region Friday. The track
of the surface low will be similar to the previous surface low,
with a trajectory north of our area. This places us under the
influence of southerly flow ahead of the low, thus, highs will
likely make it into the mid to upper 50s across much of the
area. Precipitation type still remains a little uncertain as we
will sit around freezing Thursday night. AT this point, a mix of
wintry precipitation, including rain, snow, and freezing rain
is possible across areas north and west of I-76 and I-195. Warm
air advection will eventually lead to a changeover to all rain
through the day Friday. The rain looks to continue through
Saturday before the low pulls off to the east. Saturday will
also be warm with highs likely making it into the low 50s across
much of the area. There may be a few snow showers in the
Poconos and northwest New Jersey behind the low Saturday night
into Sunday morning. Highs Sunday will be a good 10 degrees
colder.

.AVIATION /15Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of today...VFR, but with increasing mid and high clouds
this afternoon. Light winds with a predominant west or southwest
component. High confidence.

Tonight...Conditions rapidly deteriorating to sub-VFR with
light snow moving in from the west generally around/after 02z.
IFR VSBYs are likely from time to time with the snow, with CIGs
becoming MVFR. Snow may begin to wind down near daybreak, but
sub-VFR conditions should linger. Light winds. Moderate
confidence.

.Outlook...
Monday...MVFR conditions with wintry weather through the area.
Northeast winds from 5 to 10 knots.

Monday night...Conditions lowering to IFR in snow and sleet.
