.SYNOPSIS...Rain this afternoon will taper off this evening as a
weather system exits overnight. On Wednesday rain will redevelop
in the North Bay early then gradually spread over the Bay Area by
Wednesday afternoon. Heavy rain and damaging winds will spread
north to south as a potent cold front moves through the region.
The Wednesday evening commute will be severely impacted with urban
and small stream flooding likely along with downed trees and
branches. Heavy rain will continue for the Central Coast through
early Thursday morning. Numerous post frontal showers with
possible thunderstorms with small hail on Thursday. Dry Friday and
Saturday with a chance of light rain Sunday followed by a drying
trend next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 2:12 PM PST Tuesday...The first wave of low
pressure is passing over the region this afternoon. Surface low
pressure off the coast has brought steady light to locally
moderate rain to much of the region. Some gusty southeast winds
have been drawn into the low but latest radar scans are starting
to show the backside of this current slug of moisture. Nonetheless
expect another wet commute with rain gradually tapering off this
evening. A drying trend most areas overnight but some of the
coastal slopes may keep light showers going all night in moist
upslope flow.

For Wednesday expect steady rain to develop in the North Bay in
the morning under a warm advection pattern. Rain intensity will
pick up by midday and then the heavy band of rain will start to
work north to south through the Bay Area. Again the afternoon
commute will be severely impacted. Flash Flood Watches have been
posted for all areas expect San Benito and interior Monterey
County. The High Wind Watch has been converted to a High Wind
Warning for coast and hills above 1000 feet with a Wind Advisory
for the interior valleys. Damaging winds are likely during the
frontal passage as heavy rain will drag down high momentum air.
Models show 60-70 kt winds at 925 mb so frequent wind gusts in the
50 mph range will be likely across the region. This in combination
with saturated soils will set the stage for tree and powerlines
damage Weds night as the front charges through. Take action now to
plan for this storm and if you dont have to go out Weds afternoon
and evening please stay off the roadways.

The main stem rivers will show rapid rises with the Carmel River
now forecast to reach Monitor stage on the backside of the storm
on Thursday as high run-off continues from the Santa Lucia where
in excess of 6 inches of rain will likely fall.

Numerous showers will continue on Thursday in the post-frontal
environment. The period of biggest concern will be Weds night
when the front goes through with rain rates easily approach 1 inch
per hour in many locations. Storm totals of 1-3 inches for the
valleys and 3-6 inches for the hills should be fairly common by
the time things wind down Thursday night.

Dry weather returns Friday and Saturday. A chance of light rain
Sunday as a weak front passes through NorCal. Qpf looks light with
this, on the order of a few tenths or so. Drying trend MLK Monday
through much of next week.

.AVIATION...As of 09:48 AM PST Tuesday...For 18z tafs. Widespread
light to moderate rain continues to spread northward across all
terminals. CIGS for the most part are rather high - 4k ft and
above. Latest guidance shows a transition to showers later today
and eventually VCSH overnight. There will be periods of dry
weather overnight and early tomorrow, but nailing timing is low
conf and covered it with VCSH in tafs. Winds will really pick up
Wednesday afternoon with rain possible toward the end of the taf
period - 18-21Z.

Vicinity of KSFO...Breezy SE winds and wet runways will be the
norm through roughly 00-03Z. Cigs will be in the 4-5k ft range.
Hit or miss showers overnight with lingering clouds. Winds
increase tomorrow after 18Z with much strong winds and developing
rain around 21Z. May need an Airport Weather Warning with the next
round of wind.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Steady rain, SE winds, high cigs through
this afternoon. Less rain this evening and overnight, but
lingering cigs. Winds will really pick up at SNS tomorrow
afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 01:51 PM PST Tuesday...Inclement weather will
bring rain, possibly thunderstorms and very gusty winds to the
coastal waters today. A much stronger storm will bring widespread
gale force winds on Wednesday and Thursday  over the waters and
bays. This system will bring heavy rainfall  and scattered
thunderstorms Wednesday night into late Thursday  morning. A very
large west swell is forecast to arrive on  Thursday. This will
make for hazardous conditions across the  coastal waters. Mariners
are urged to monitor weather forecast  closely this week.
