days of precipitation, with further run-off and precipitation likely
pushing other gauges into flood stage over the coming days.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)

Surface analysis early this morning shows an occluded surface low
over northern MN with its associated frontal boundary extending
southeast through western WI into northern IL. High pressure sits
over the Rockies. Aloft, a deep upper level low sits atop the
surface feature.

Morning satellite imagery and mosaic radar imagery shows
scattered rain showers spinning around the stacked low pressure
features. Off-and-on showers will then persist mainly along and
north of I-94 into this evening. Very little additional QPF is
expected.

After a brief clearing spell tonight with weak high pressure
moving through, attention turns to a quick-moving Pacific NW
origin system breezing across the northern tier states, underneath
strong westerlies between an eastern CONUS trough and a western
CONUS ridge. Some upper troughiness will develop during the day
Saturday through Saturday night, helping enhance the surface low
moving into the Northern Plains.

In advance of this system, strong warm air and moisture advection
will take place, bringing dewpoints into the low-mid 60s into the
Upper Mississippi River Valley late Saturday. This will likely
push MUCAPEs to around 2000 J/kg in tandem with the strong shear
in the mid-to-upper levels. While coverage will not be impressive,
it may not take much to have a few strong-to-severe thunderstorms
develop in the late afternoon through evening hours. Initial
storm mode looks to be discrete cells during the late afternoon
hours Saturday that may merge into southwestward-moving clusters
during the evening. SWODY2 has expanded the Marginal Risk
westward, now encompassing nearly all of the WFO MPX coverage
area.

As for temperatures, quite the difference is expected from today
to tomorrow. Under the upper level low today, highs will only
reach the low-mid 60s. On Saturday with the strong warm air
advection, highs will jump to the 70s area-wide.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday)

The main story in the long term period is the forecast warm
weather for next week. Little change was made to the previous
forecast for the period.

Saturday evening, a subtle 700-850mb wave will lead to low level
warm air advection developing across southeast MN into western WI,
co-located with a strengthening low level jet and hence, strong
low level convergence which will likely lead to showers and a
few thunderstorms developing.

On Sunday, a deeply amplified upper trough will approach western
North America from the Pacific, leading to a rapidly amplifying
downstream ridge that will progress eastward into our area by
Monday. Strengthening southerly flow and rising temperatures and
dew points is a very good bet at this point. Temperatures rising
into the 80s with dew points near 70 degrees will feel more like
Summer than Fall early next week. Wednesday will bring our next
chance of precipitation to the local area ahead of a strong
shortwave that will lift from Wyoming through the Dakotas. Some of
the guidance aggressively weakens the wave as it approaches
though, which would imply a better chance of staying dry midweek.
For now, stuck with the blended approach which bring chances for
showers and thunderstorms Wednesday.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning)

Mix of MVFR-IFR ceilings this morning as a large stacked low
pressure system rotating over northern MN continues to slowly
slide eastward. Scattered off-and-on -SHRA will drift across
central MN into western WI, generally north of I-94. Any and all
precipitation is expected to end in MN this afternoon and in WI
this evening, allowing for partial clearing overnight through
tomorrow. Chances of any impactful showers are quite low so aside
from KAXN at initialization, have kept TAFs dry. Breezy W winds
will persist through this evening then diminish overnight thru
Saturday morning. Potential for some ground fog around daybreak
Saturday morning but confidence not high enough for inclusion at
this point.

KMKT outage...Have referred KMKT outage to technicians since
observations have been very sporadic over the past 24 hours.
Apparently it is a telco issue but the problem is being worked on
and hopefully observations return soon. In the interim, have added
AMD NOT SKED to the TAF.

KMSP...MVFR ceilings to start with ceilings bouncing above and
below the 1700ft threshold. VFR ceilings to return late afternoon
with clouds scattering out early this evening. Precipitation looks
to remain north of MSP so have kept the TAF dry.
