Early this evening, the leading edge of the snow was beginning to cross into far southern Wisconsin from eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois. The most likely area for heavy snow is from south central to central Wisconsin along with east central Wisconsin where some minor lake enhancement may occur. Between 7 and 12 inches is expected in south central into east central Wisconsin through Tuesday night where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect. Between 4 and 8 inches is expected in southeast Wisconsin where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. The heaviest snow is expected to fall tonight into early Tuesday. Today through Wednesday Morning...Forecast Confidence is Medium

Main focus is on the pending winter storm slated to hit southern
Wisconsin starting tonight, lasting into Tuesday. Confidence is
high enough at this point to upgrade the watch to
warnings/advisories due to the amount of forecast snow and gusty
winds tonight.
Overall, have tried to stay on the conservative side of the
QPF/snow ratio spectrum through the bulk of this event given that
this system looks fairly progressive and could get dry slotted in
far southeast WI Tuesday morning. For storm total QPF, it ranges
from about 0.50" to 0.75" with the higher amounts in south central
WI. For snow to liquid ratios, generally stayed around 8/1 to 12/1
with the lower ratios occurring to the south/southeast.
Model-wise, stayed away from the 11.00z NAM which features twice
the QPF of any other model during the prime of the system tonight.
It also closes off the 500mb trough much faster than the 11.00z
GFS/ECMWF/GEM which wraps up the sfc/850mb faster and thus
produces the higher QPF at the nose of the 700mb trowel. Have
overall, liked the trend that the GFS has produced, particularly
through this event which shows the heaviest band of QPF moving
through between 6-12z Tuesday and then much lower amounts through
the rest of the day as the deeper forcing ahead of the trough
propagates northward. Would be more inclined to go with higher
amounts if the system wasn't so progressive and showed some
pivoting of the precipitation band. Instead, this is mainly one
strong shot of forcing followed on both sides with weaker forcing.
Going through Tuesday evening, pushed back the start time of the
precipitation onset this evening to fall in line with 11.00z GFS
soundings w/when they saturate out. There appears to be a better
northward push initially in southwest Wisconsin this evening, so
have started the Winter Storm Warning there at 9pm/3z. Started the
rest of the headlines at midnight though FDL/Sheboygan counties
may just start seeing some snow at that point.
Very consistent agreement by the models not only with this run but
previous runs that the deepest forcing comes in between 6-12z
Tuesday (midnight-6am) ahead of the 500mb trough, in the WAA zone
of the 850mb low and when the surface low lifts across central IL
toward NW Indiana. Dendritic growth zone appears to be less than
100mb, so that's a negative but typical with southern stream
systems like this. With the gusty easterly surface winds, thinking
that there could be some minor lake enhancement, particularly
toward east central WI.
By 12z Tuesday, the deepest forcing has quickly propagated north
but the 850mb circulation is still nearby and should provide
enough low level lift to keep producing some snow through the
morning. Back edge light snow continues through the afternoon as
winds begin to increase out of the northwest, which will likely
lead to some blowing/drifting snow into the evening hours as the
snow diminishes.
As far as the warning/advisory layout, feel the most confident
about Sauk/Marquette/Columbia/Iowa counties seeing the most snow,
generally in the 7-9" range there by Tuesday afternoon. A bit more
uncertain from Lafayette through Dane/Dodge/FDL/Wash/Oz/Sheb, but
have a solid 6-8" with some guidance going higher than that. Left
the rest as an advisory for now due to the uncertainty with the
Tue morning dry slot and how much lake enhancement occurs for
Milw/Racine/Kenosha counties. Can't rule out that another tier of
counties could be added to the warning, but wasn't confident
enough to do so at this point.
.LONG TERM...
Wednesday and Wednesday Night...Forecast Confidence High...
Winds will diminish through the day Wednesday as a surface ridge
builds into the area. Temperatures Wednesday will be below
average, but not unreasonably so, with highs in the low to mid
20s. A few peaks of sunshine may even make an appearance during
the latter portion of the day.
Winds become easterly Wednesday night as the next system of
interest takes shape to our west. Lows will fall into the low
teens and upper single digits Wednesday night.
Thursday through Friday Night...Forecast Confidence Low to
Moderate...
Extended guidance has come into somewhat better, though still not
great, agreement for the Thursday/Friday system. Trends have been
toward a less phased and thus weaker solution overall. Lift is
expected to increase Thursday evening ahead of a northern stream
trough and surface front, with light snow overspreading the area.
A southern stream wave over the Central Plains will eventually
begin to phase with the northern wave Thursday night into Friday,
with surface low pressure deepening in response to the
strengthening upper level lift. The timing and location of that
phasing will be key to snow potential for southern Wisconsin.
Right now the GFS has that phasing taking place sooner and further
to the west, with a stronger surface low and more QPF for the
area. The EC is further to the east, and weaker with its QPF
signal. There's decent confidence that we will see snow from this
system, but amounts will be highly dependent on how the
aforementioned features play out.
Next Weekend...Forecast Confidence Moderate...
Fairly expansive Canadian high pressure will build into the upper
Midwest and Great Lakes for the weekend, bringing below average
temperatures to the region. Highs in the teens and 20s and lows in
the single digits look to be favored at this point.

Main focus is on the approaching winter storm which will bring the
current MVFR conditions down to IFR and LIFR for times tonight.
The heaviest snow is expected to move through between 6-12z with
some 1/4sm to 3/4sm visibilities possible at times with the snow
falling as winds gust into the mid 20kt range. The heaviest snow
will subside Tuesday morning as winds also subside for a period
before increasing out of the northwest Tuesday afternoon/evening.

East winds increase across the open waters and nearshore later
today, continuing into Tuesday morning. Could see some gale gusts
across the open waters tonight, but right now confidence is too
low for a warning. For the nearshore, while most of the waters are
iced over, did issue a Small Craft Advisory for any open waters,
as well as for the potential for strong winds for anyone out on
the ice.
Strong west to northwest winds are then expected later Tuesday
into Wednesday morning. Gale Watch is out for both the open waters
