...STRONG WINDS EXPECTED OVER LAKE MICHIGAN TONIGHT INTO
WEDNESDAY NIGHT...

.Strong low pressure will pass across the western Great Lakes
tonight and Wednesday. This will result in several periods of
strong, gusty winds and high waves over the nearshore and open
waters of Lake Michigan.

Widespread winds of 35 to 45 knots are expected from late tonight
through Wednesday night. Frequent 50 knot gusts are expected
across the northern half of the lake late tonight into Wednesday,
while 50 knot gusts are expected to develop across the southern
half during the day Wednesday into Wednesday evening. All
mariners should be prepared to alter navigation plans in
recognition of these dangerous conditions.

.Strong low pressure will track from northern Lake Michigan to
east of Lake Huron today. This will result in several periods of
strong, gusty winds and high waves over the nearshore and open
waters of Lake Michigan.

Widespread winds of 35 to 45 knots are expected through tonight.
Frequent 50 knot gusts are expected across the southern half of
the lake today into the early evening. All mariners should be
prepared to alter navigation plans in recognition of these
dangerous conditions.

.Low pressure system departing the Great Lakes will keep gusty
northwesterly winds and high waves over Lake Michigan through the
early morning hours with winds gradually subsiding.

Widespread winds of 25 to 35 knots are expected tonight over the
open waters with gale gusts primarily in the southern half of the
lake toward the eastern shoreline. High pressure and lighter 
winds return today into Friday.

.UPDATE...

No major surprises for southern Wisconsin for the next 36-48
hours. Rain, low clouds, and fog will overspread the area from the
south late this afternoon into the early evening hours. Easterly
winds will be gusty as well, but will settle down briefly late
tonight as the center of the surface low moves through the area.
A few thunderstorms will be possible late tonight, with the best
chance south of I-94. Temperatures will rise through the night,
with the 24 hour highs for Wednesday likely being set during the
pre-dawn hours.

Tomorrow looks to be very windy, with 30-45 MPH gusts common
through the afternoon. A few rain or snow showers are possible as
well, especially over east central parts of the forecast area. No
significant snow accumulations are expected for southern
Wisconsin.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...

Ceilings and visibility will rapidly fall late this afternoon into
early evening to IFR and LIFR as rain overspreads the area from
the south, ahead of strong low pressure. Expect easterly winds to
increase as well, with gusts into late evening. Some thunder will
also be possible after midnight, though should not be too
widespread. Winds will decrease slightly as the center of the low
pressure moves through overnight, with LLWS windshear developing
at all sites.

A slight improvement in flight conditions is expected early
Wednesday, before low clouds return. Very gusty northwest winds
are expected through the day on Wednesday, with 35 to 40 knot
gusts common during the daytime hours. Winds will slowly decrease
in intensity Wednesday evening.

MARINE...

The marine concerns and headlines remain intact. The main story
will be a rapidly deepening, dangerous storm system tracking from
Kansas this evening to southern and central Wisconsin by sunrise
on Wednesday. The low will continue to deepen on Wednesday as it
moves quickly northeast during the day. Look for rapidly
increasing easterly winds late this afternoon and evening, veering
to the southeast then south tonight. Storm force easterly winds
are expected across the northern third of the lake later tonight,
continuing into Wednesday morning. The focus for the strongest
winds will then shift to the southern two thirds of the lake
later Wednesday morning into Wednesday evening as winds veer to
the southwest then northwest in the wake of the powerful storm
system. Those winds may reach storm force levels as well. Mariners
should expect rapidly changing and very dangerous operating
conditions across Lake Michigan over the next 48 hours. High
pressure builds in on Thursday, allowing winds to decrease
rapidly by Thursday afternoon.

SHORT TERM...

Today and Wednesday...Forecast Confidence is High...

This morning will be mostly quiet though a strong area of upper
level frontogenesis and a small vort max could lead to a brief
snow/rain showers for the northwest parts of the CWA. However, a
distinct dry layer in the mid levels may keep precipitation from
reaching the surface.

The main story for this period is the strong low pressure expected
to push into the region from the southwest. This system will be
heavily forced throughout the atmosphere with the main feature
being a very strong upper level closed low. There will be other
supporting characters, including some upper level divergence,
strong WAA in the low and mid levels, a fairly strong LLJ
present and plenty of frontogenesis throughout the column. This is
one of the stronger systems we have seen this year. Fortunately we
will not have to worry about snow as we will remain well above
freezing for the most part with rain expected throughout the CWA,
though the far northwest could see some snowflakes but will not
accumulate. We do also have a slight chance for a rumble of
thunder as there may be some instability available Tuesday night.
Precipitation will push out by Wednesday evening .

These are not the only concerns as we will see strong west winds
push in on the backside of this system associated with a very
strong pressure gradient. Gusts to 40 to 55 mph will be possible
through the day Wednesday, especially in the afternoon, thus a
Wind Advisory has been issued for much of the CWA, with the
exception of Sauk, Green Lake, and Marquette Counties. Winds
should begin to weaken into the Wednesday evening.

LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday...Forecast confidence medium.

A north to south pressure ridge around 1034 mb will slowly move east
across the region for Thu aft-eve. A nice Thanksgiving Day is
expected.

Strong cyclogenesis followed quickly by occlusion will occur from
the central high plains to SD for Fri-Fri nt. The occluded low will
slowly fill as it approaches and eventually traverses srn WI late
Sat nt-Sun. There may be very light snow late Thu nt-Fri due to mid
level warm advection and frontogenesis but the models do vary. As
the large occlusion approaches, the warm conveyor belt will arrive
some time Fri nt-Sat. Widespread rainfall is expected. The dry slot
will arrive some time Sat nt followed by the occluding low. Light
rain will change to light snow with the arrival of the occlusion but
any snow accums should remain light. High Pressure will then return
late Monday. Temps through this period will remain reasonably close
to the normals.
