The Wind Advisory will expire at 6 PM CST this evening. Winds
gusts across southern Wisconsin have been gradually falling this
afternoon and will continue to do so into this evening. A brief
gust or two above criteria is possible through 7 to 8pm but these
will be isolated.

Area Forecast Discussion

.UPDATE...

Satellite imagery continues to show the clouds lingering over
the NW portions of the area. Made additional adjustments to sky
grids to handle these and some high level clouds that work in
overnight. The current forecast is on track with overnight lows
for much of the area around freezing.

.AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...

VFR conditions are forecast through 20-00z Tuesday. A few SCT
clouds at 3,500ft could work into MSN/UES tonight but believe that
the these should remain just north of the terminals. A strong low
pressure system will approach the region on Tuesday with rain
moving in the afternoon. Expect cigs to drop to towards low end
MVFR through the evening and then down to IFR by the overnight
hours Tuesday into Wednesday. Any heavier showers could drop vsbys
to LIFR at times.

Winds shift to the east in the morning, south through the
afternoon, and then switch quickly to the west overnight. Strong
winds aloft on the backside of the low will result in a period of
Wind Shear for locations near the WI/IL border.

UPDATE...

GOES Nighttime Microphysics continues to suggest more southerly
movement with the low/mid level clouds than originally
forecasted. Adjustments have been made to bring a bit more cloud
cover into the area tonight. This increase in clouds and slight
breezes through the night should keep temps a few degrees warmer
than forecast. Will adjust lows where clouds end up being more
persistent tonight. The rest of the forecast is on track.

MARINE...

Winds gradually become more westerly through the night as high
pressure pushes in from the west. Expect winds to shift to the
east late Tuesday morning ahead of an incoming system. No changes
are needed to the current forecast.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 519 PM CST Mon Nov 25 2019)

UPDATE...

Clouds have been steadily clearing this afternoon. However, the
system to our north has been pushing a mid-level deck of clouds
southward this afternoon. Some of these clouds could push into the
northern portions of the area but with this upper level system
forecast to shift E/NE away from the area overnight, think clouds
will push back northward late tonight. So at this time the current
forecast is on track and no changes are needed.

AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...

VFR conditions are forecast through Tuesday morning. It's possible
that a few 3,500ft clouds clip the MSN airport late this evening
as a system passes to the north. Otherwise, we will start to see
clouds increase during the day Tuesday as a strong system moves
towards the region. A warm front will lift north across southern
WI Tuesday afternoon bringing ceilings down to around 1,000ft at
time. Moderate showers Tuesday afternoon could drop cigs and vis
down to IFR conditions at times. Winds ramp up during the
afternoon hours out of the south and it's possible for some wind
shear to develop just beyond the current TAF period.

DISCUSSION...

TONIGHT through TUESDAY...Forecast Confidence is High...

The 500mb shortwave, that has been responsible for today's high
clouds and a few light showers, will continue to push across Lake
Superior region this evening. Drier air is beginning to move in and
scattering out the high clouds late this afternoon. Skies will
continue to clear as the shortwave pushes eastward away from the
area this evening. Overnight will be dry and cool with lows in low
to mid 30s.

However, as our next weather maker develops along the Colorado front
range overnight and progresses across the Central Plains Tuesday
morning, high and mid level clouds will return to our region with
the 850mb WAA moving into the region in association with a warm
front Tuesday late morning/afternoon. With the mostly cloudy
skies developing for Tuesday, high temperatures are expected to be
a few degrees cooler than today, but still are expected to range
from the low to mid 40s.

As the upper-level trough continues to dig eastward across the
Northern Plains as the surface low will deepens, the upper-level
diffluent region of the 250mb jet is expected to reach the upper
Midwest Tuesday afternoon. The combination of low-level WAA and the
upper-level diffluence beginning to come together over the area
should provide enough synoptic support for isolated to scattered
rain chances Tuesday afternoon. Better rain chances are expected
for the start of the extended period.

Tuesday night - Confidence...Medium
A potent mid level wave with a negative tilt will be approaching
the area with decent DCVA arriving. In the lower levels there will
be warm/moist advection. Some models show sfc dews getting to
near 50. Mid level instability will be on the increase as well.
Expecting non-diurnal temp curve as readings rise from early evening
values. Will retain the mention of thunder with the strong shortwave
and left front quad of h2-h3 jet max. SPC SWODY2 General Thunder
expansion into srn WI looks good. Surface low proggd to move
through south central WI after midnight.

Wednesday - Confidence...Medium
Primary 500 millibar wave will shift northeast along with the
surface low. Lingering cyclonic flow and influence of def zone
precip will prevail for a time. As the surface low shifts northeast
the cold advection will start to wrap in on increasing wnw winds
so we could be seeing falling afternoon temps. The winds may reach
advisory levels with surface/850 pressure gradient tightening up
on southern periphery of departing low. Seeing 40-45 knots at 925
millibar with GFS/NAM Bufkit soundings showing appreciable mixing
to pull down some higher winds likely leading to wind advisory
conditions from mid morning into the early evening hours.

Wednesday night through Thursday night - Confidence...Medium
Overall this is shaping up to be a quiet period. The 25.00z Euro
is an outlier on bringing in a waa wing of precip on Thursday
night. The other models keep the influence of the ridge firm with
holding precip off to our west.

Friday through Sunday - Confidence...Low to Medium
Another low will be plod through the area from the central or
northern Plains. A period of mixed precipitation may occur at the
outset but for the most part lots of details to work out yet with
regards to precip type and eventual snow amounts based on track.
The 25.12z Euro suggests a little more snow creeping into our
area, which the GEM has been suggesting as well. The GFS has been
showing the warmest solution with the better snow potential in
nrn WI. Lots of time yet to sort this one out.

Monday - Confidence...Medium
High pressure is proggd to start nudging towards the area with
lingering cold air advection in the wake of the departed weekend
system.

AVIATION(21Z TAFS)...The high clouds that have persisted through
most of the day have begun to scatter out a bit and are expected
to clear out through the evening. VFR conditions will prevail overnight
with increasing high and mid-level clouds Tuesday morning with PoPs
increasing and ceilings lowering by Tuesday evening.

MARINE...Surface low pressure continues to push eastward across Lake
Superior late this afternoon. As a weaker pressure gradient sets
in as a weak high pressure builds into the region overnight, and
the southwesterly flow will be become lighter into Tuesday.

A strong low pressure will push across the western Great Lakes
Tuesday night and Wednesday. This will result in several periods
of strong, gusty winds and high waves over the nearshore and open
waters of Lake Michigan.

Widespread winds of 35 to 45 knots are expected from late Tuesday
through Wednesday night. Frequent 50 knot gusts are expected

A deepening low pressure system expected to move through the
western Great Lakes will bring a period of strong winds and high
waves to the Open Waters of Lake Michigan Tuesday night into
Wednesday night. Widespread gale force winds are expected from
late Tuesday through Wednesday night. Frequent storm force gusts
are expected across the northern half of the lake late Tuesday
night into Wednesday, while storm force gusts are expected to
develop across the southern half during the day Wednesday into
Wednesday evening. Thus, a Storm Watch is in effect for all open
waters of Lake Michigan beginning Tuesday night into Wednesday
evening.
