.Gale force winds are expected to develop over the north half of
Lake Michigan Tuesday morning as a compact, strong low pressure
system tracks across northern Minnesota and Lake Superior. Gales
will expand into nearly all of the south half of Lake Michigan by
mid morning. Look for gales to taper off from west to east late
Tuesday afternoon through the late evening.

  increasing to gales to 40 kt late in the morning with a few
  gusts to 45 kt, then becoming southwest early in the afternoon 
  and diminishing to gales to 35 kt late. Winds will abruptly 
  shift to the northwest up to 30 kt Tuesday night. 

* WAVES: 3 to 5 feet Tuesday morning building to 8 to 12 ft 
  occasionally to 16 ft Tuesday afternoon, then subsiding to 4

The Gale Warning is now in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening. 

* WINDS: Southwest gales to 35 kt diminishing quickly. Winds will
  shift to the west to 15 to 25 kt early this evening and to the 
  northwest overnight. 

* WAVES: Waves 7 to 10 ft occasionally to 13 ft this afternoon, 
  then subsiding to 4 to 8 feet late tonight.

.UPDATE...

The CU field across southern Wisconsin is looking slightly
agitated and suggests some convergence as well. CAPE is increasing
enough that it seems prudent to throw in a slight chance of
showers for the afternoon.  No real changes to the evolution of
things tonight. The weak trough over the area this afternoon/evening
will lift north as a warm front as the Low Level Jet increases.
The bulk of the forcing will remain north and west of southern
Wisconsin through much of the night. The concern is what will make
it down here from about 10-15z Tuesday as the main convective
complex rolls across central and northern WI.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...

CU development late this morning has been hovering around the
VFR/MVFR threshold, but should lift to VFR levels during the
afternoon. This CU is along a very weak low pressure trough, and
it may be the focus for a few afternoon showers. Otherwise, look
for mainly VFR conditions through the evening. The weak trough
over southern Wisconsin will lift north as a warm front tonight
and it may again trigger some showers or thunderstorms as it moves
north. But, our main focus will be on a large complex of storms
expected to develop along a cold front over Minnesota and push
into central Wisconsin after 06z Tuesday, then possibly dive south
into southern Wisconsin between 10-14z Tuesday. There is
uncertainty as to how widespread or intense this activity may be
as it gets into the area. It should be in a weakening stage at
that point. However, do expect lowering CIGS to MVFR to arrive
with the showers and storms. Also expect southerly winds to
increase rapidly after 12z Tuesday. Gusts could approach 30-35kts
by 18z Tuesday.

UPDATE...

A rather nice day is in store for southern Wisconsin. A weak
surface trough stretches from near Milwaukee, west through Madison
to Spring Green. There's some bumpy CU along it, but not sure it
will be enough to generate showers today. Some of the high
resolution guidance try to generate isolated showers, others
don't. If we do see something, it should be minor. We'll keep a
close eye on that trend.

MARINE...

No changes to the marine forecast this morning. The obvious main
concern is the expectation of Gale force southerly winds on
Tuesday as low pressure quickly deepens and tracks north of the
region. Southerly winds will increase to 20 to 30kt with gale
force gusts up to 40kt over northern Lake Michigan. Gales to 35kt
are possible over all but the far southern basin of the lake. A
Gale Watch is in effect for the open lake for all but the far
south. Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected for the
nearshore waters of southeast WI. The winds will shift quickly to
the northwest, then north Tuesday evening as a cold front sweeps
through.

UPDATE...

Clouds are actually breaking up overhead this morning, but expect
a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. With dewpoints
creeping into the 60s, it will feel a little humid. High
temperatures will be in the upper 70s.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Clouds with bases between 3500 and 5000 ft spread into southern
WI early this morning, but are breaking apart. Ceilings may dip
to around 2500 ft AGL through mid morning in south central Wi before
improving back to VFR. Expect VFR scattered to broken ceilings
through the afternoon.

There is a chance for thunderstorms tonight, with the best chance
late tonight into Tuesday morning which could bring gusty winds
and MVFR ceilings.

Gusty southerly winds are expected all day Tuesday, along with
scattered thunderstorms and MVFR ceilings. Winds will shift to
the north Tuesday night in the wake of a cold front.

SHORT TERM...

Today through Tuesday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

Clouds associated with weak vorticity advection and warm air
advection are sliding into southern WI early this morning. This
will help keep the patchy ground fog from becoming too widespread.
Very weak warm air advection will be ongoing over southern WI for
most of the day. This will cause fairly persistent but broken
clouds. We are not expecting showers, although a few sprinkles are
possible.

A period of warm air advection along the nose of the low level jet
out ahead of a compact surface low pressure system will bring
renewed shower and thunderstorm chances to southern WI beginning
this evening. A thunderstorm complex associated with the strong
low is expected to slide through northern MN late this afternoon
and across central or southern WI late tonight into Tuesday
morning. If this complex remains organized, there is a threat for
damaging winds over southern WI early Tuesday morning. The shear
will be strong, but instability weak. The more likely scenario is
that the storms will be weakening by the time they reach our area.
SPC has southern WI in the Marginal Risk for severe for Day 1.

Winds will be gusty out of the south-southwest all day Tuesday.
Then a cold front sliding southeast through WI will be the focus
for additional storms through late Tuesday afternoon. Modest
instability and strong shear would support an isolated strong
storm, so SPC kept southern WI in the Day 2 Slight Risk area.
Models continue to back off the precip chances along the cold
front due to dry air aloft.

Tuesday night through Wednesday night...Forecast confidence high.

A 997 mb low will move from just east of Lake Superior to Quebec
Tue nt. Breezy wly winds will shift nly with a surge of cold
advection. A large high pressure area over the nrn Great Plains
will then build into the wrn Great Lakes for Wed afternoon and
evening. 850 mb temps may drop to 6-8C on Wed rebounding to 8-10C
late in the day. There may be enough low level moisture for
scattered cumulus to develop. High temps in the middle to upper
60s are forecast. Good radiational cooling conditions will drop
temps to 45-50F for most locations inland from Lake MI for Wed nt.

LONG TERM...Thursday through Sunday...Forecast confidence medium.

Introduced a slight chance of showers for portions of srn WI Thu-
Fri. A weak sfc trough and wave aloft will be passing through the
area. A nnely sfc flow and cold advection will follow for Sat.
High pressure will then extend swd from Canada into the Great
Lakes for Sun. Below normal temps are expected especially for the
weekend.

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Clouds with bases between 3500 and 5000 ft are spreading into
southern WI early this morning. Ceilings may dip to around 2500 ft
AGL through mid morning before improving back to VFR. Expect VFR
broken ceilings through the afternoon.

There is a chance for thunderstorms tonight, with the best chance
late tonight into Tuesday morning which could bring gusty winds.

Gusty southerly winds are expected all day Tuesday, along with
scattered thunderstorms. Winds will shift to the north Tuesday
night in the wake of a cold front.

MARINE...

Light winds will persist today. Then expect rapidly increasing
southerly winds after sunrise on Tuesday. A deepening low pressure
system will track from the northern plains this evening to
northeast of Lake Superior by Tuesday afternoon. Southerly winds
will increase to 20 to 30kt with gale force gusts up to 40kt
over northern Lake Michigan. Gales to 35kt are possible over all

Tuesday evening. Breezy southwest winds will develop over all of
Lake Michigan on Tuesday followed by the passage of a cold front
and gusty north winds Tuesday night into Wednesday. Gale force
gusts will be possible during this time. Waves will build to 8 to
12 feet occasionally to 16 feet over portions of northern and
central Lake Michigan for Tuesday afternoon.

Thunderstorm chances return late tonight with thunderstorms likely
on Tuesday.
