...Fire Weather Risk to Continue into Saturday...

.Gusty winds will gradually lower and humidity will rise later
this evening in the Fremont National Forest in south-central 
Oregon as well as the Klamath and Modoc National Forest in 
northeast California. 

A strong system for this time of the year will move up from the 
south on Friday and could bring frequent lightning on dry fuels 
late Friday morning into Friday evening. Thunderstorms are 
expected to produce little or no rainfall to start, then the 
chance for wetting rain is expected to increase Friday evening.
The risk of thunderstorms could continue overnight through 
Saturday evening, though these should produce significant
rainfall.

  abundant lightning on dry fuels may produce numerous new starts 
  that pose a threat to life and property, and may overwhelm 
  initial attack capabilities. However, wetting rainfall may occur
  under cores of thunderstorms. 

* Affected area: This evening, In Northern CA...Modoc National 
  Forest in fire zone 285, mainly from Alturas north and west. On 
  Saturday, all of Fire Zone 285.

* Winds this evening: Southwest 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 
  mph.

Lightning has diminished greatly with the system this evening.

.DISCUSSION...

Another deep and broad marine layer pushed into the forecast area
this morning. A lot of places near the coast and some of the
inland valleys did see a trace to a few hundreths of drizzle last
night. We did lower temperatures in most of Douglas County with
this deep marine layer keeping high temperatures in the lower
70's. Thunderstorms are still in the forecast for northern Lake
and Klamath County in addition to the eastern portions of Modoc
and Lake County today.

.AVIATION...For the 08/12Z TAFs...A deep, extensive marine layer
blankets much of the interior west side this morning, including the
Illinois and Applegate valleys and portions of the Klamath River
valley. This area of MVFR/IFR in low clouds and fog will continue
through later this morning. Confidence is low in the marine layer
making it all the way into the Rogue Valley to affect KMFR, but it's
not out of the question to see some scattered MVFR cigs develop
around sunrise. Conditions should improve by late morning and into
the afternoon, but MVFR is likely to return to the coast later this
evening.

Elsewhere, VFR conditions will prevail for the next 24 hours,
although there is a possibility of isolated afternoon thunderstorms
over northern Lake and Klamath Counties, and along and east of the
Warner Mountains.

.MARINE...Updated 800 AM PDT Thursday 08 August 2019...An
upper level low continues to linger off the coast and will move
inland Saturday. No strong low level features are expected with this
system and as a result, relatively calm winds and seas will continue
through at least Sunday morning. However, there will be extensive
fog and/or low clouds with periods of drizzle or light showers due
to extra lift within and above the marine layer. Expect the best
chance of showers to occur Friday into Saturday as the center of the
low passes overhead.

The thermal trough could re-establish itself early next week, with
gusty north winds returning as early as Sunday evening.

.FIRE WEATHER...Updated 230 AM PDT Wednesday 07 August 2019...The main
weather concern is centered on Friday with the potential for
abundant lightning with dry fuels. Thunderstorms may be strong on
Friday with a slight chance for damaging winds and hail,
especially for central portions of the area along and near the
Southern Oregon Cascades. Ahead of the low, another round of gusty
southwest winds and low humidities is expected today in
southeastern portions of the area. This will bring red flag
conditions to portions of zones 285, 284 and southeast zone 626.
Additionally, isolated thunderstorms are expected northeastern
portions of the area this afternoon and evening.

An upper low will remain centered offshore of the Oregon coast
today. Meanwhile mid level moisture will continue to move up from
the south and  into eastern portions of the area. Moisture and
instability will bring a isolated thunderstorms and showers to
eastern and northern Lake, eastern Modoc and northern Klamath
counties. It still looks like the risk for scattered thunderstorms
will be out of our area to the east and north. However, models are
showing an areas of increased thunderstorms this afternoon in
southeastern portions of zone 625.  Winds for areas east of the
Cascades are expected to be slightly stronger this afternoon and
evening compared to yesterday. This combined with dry afternoon and
early evening humidities will bring red flag conditions to zones
285, northeastern 284 and southeastern 625. Please see RFWMFR for
details.

Friday will be the most active day of the forecast period in
terms of thunderstorm activity, frequency of lighting and storm
intensity. There is good agreement showing the upper low moving
east towards southwest Oregon and becoming negatively tilted
during the day Friday. This pattern is one that is favorable for
scattered thunderstorms for areas inland of the coastal mountains.
Thunderstorms are expected to fire up late Friday morning, then
increase in coverage and intensity as the afternoon progresses.
It's not out of the question a few storms could be severe Friday
afternoon and early Friday evening. from the western slopes of the
Southern Oregon Cascades northeast into northern Klamath County.
The best chance for scattered thunderstorms on Friday is across
eastern Douglas, Jackson, western and central Siskiyou and
northwest Klamath counties. Given the above scenario, a Fire
Weather Watch has been issued for most of the forecast area. The
exception is the coastal fire zones (618,615 and 619) and Northern
Californian zones 282 and 285. Please see RFWMFR for details.

The upper low will move overhead  Friday night into Saturday with
noticeable cooling. The combination of colder air aloft and strong
surface heating and moisture will allow for a mix of showers and
thunderstorms across most of the area. Thunderstorms may be embedded
with showers and may be a mix of isolated to scattered on Saturday.
The best chance for thunderstorms will be across
eastern/southeastern Douglas, eastern Josephine, Jackson, and
Siskiyou counties and from the Southern Oregon Cascades eastward.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 354 AM PDT Thu Aug 8 2019/

SHORT TERM...A strong upper low located off the Oregon coast
will gradually move southeastward towards the coast Friday then
will move overhead on Saturday, bringing a cooler pattern with
showers and scattered thunderstorms possible. Ahead of this low,
expect warm and mostly dry weather today, except for isolated
thunderstorms and showers over eastern portions of the area. Gusty
southwest winds and dry humidities are also a concern today,
especially for southeastern portions of the CWA this afternoon and
evening. Friday into Saturday, the main concern will shift to the
potential for scattered thunderstorms and showers over much of
the area as the low moves onshore. On Friday, storms may be strong
and there is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, especially
from Jackson County northeastward into the Southern Oregon
Cascades and northern Klamath County. With the low moving onshore
Friday night and inland over the area Saturday, expect a mix of
showers and thunderstorms.

This morning, satellite imagery shows a marine push of low clouds
has spread from the coast, across the Umpqua and into the Grants
Pass and Illinois Valley area. Expect these low clouds to spread
into the Applegate and portions of the Rogue Valley in Jackson
county this morning. Low clouds will clear this afternoon across
most inland areas. Warm and dry conditions will affect most the
area this afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms and showers are
expected though in eastern Modoc, Lake and northern Klamath
counties. Radar imagery shows showers over far eastern Modoc this
morning. During the afternoon and evening, models indicate that
the best chance for thunderstorm development will be over
southeast Lake, northern Lake and southwest Klamath. Thunderstorms
will be mainly isolated although an areas of scattered storms is
possible in southeast Lake county.

Increased chances for thunderstorms and a potential for severe
thunderstorms are then expected on Friday. Models continue to
indicate that the upper level low will gradually push into the
coast of northern California late Friday, becoming negatively
tilted as it approaches the coast. This pattern will support
scattered thunderstorms and showers. The combination of
significant instability, moderate to strong lapse rates, moderate
MLCAPE and bulk shear of 30-40 kts may allow for some organized
storms. These storms could develop into severe thunderstorms with
damaging wind and hail Friday afternoon and evening. The Storm
Precipitation Center has us under a slight risk for severe
thunderstorms on Friday. The highest chances for strong
thunderstorms is expected across portions of Jackson County
northeastward into the southern Oregon Cascades and northern
Klamath County. Because of the large amount of lightning expected,
we decided to issue a fire weather watch on Friday. This will be
explained in more detail in the fire weather discussion below.

Friday night, expect increasing showers and a slight chance for
thunderstorms as the low moves onshore over Northern California
then shift over the area. On Saturday, with the low overhead,
expect strong dynamics aloft combined with moisture, daytime
heating and increasing instability to bring a mix of showers and
thunderstorms. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible
Saturday. However, storms are not expected to be as strong as on
Friday. Also thunderstorms may be embedded with showers at times.
Temperatures will be significantly cooler on Saturday as well with
highs in the 70s across inland areas.

Then as the low moves northeast, expect showers and thunderstorms
to diminish Saturday night.

LONG TERM...Beyond this weekend things start to return to normal
with highs moving back to their climatological normals for this
time of year. The four corner high slides down farther southward
towards the start of next week, so this will probably allow for
more upper level lows to move through the Pacific Northwest.
