forecast in the next 48 hours...

  Larkin Williams is closed at Riverside Golf Club entrance.  In 
  Valley Park...Tree Court Industrial Road begins flooding between

.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Saturday Afternoon)

A period of active weather is anticipated through Saturday
afternoon. The primary forecast concerns are 1) a few strong to
severe storms today, and 2) heavy rainfall and the potential for
flooding in central MO.

Early morning water vapor imagery and the RAP 1.5 PVU analysis field
each depicted a series of PV anomalies stretching westward from
southern NV through CA and back out over the Pacific Ocean. Models
are in good agreement that this elongated feature will progress ESE
into the central CONUS over the next 24-48 hours. Meanwhile, a
separate PV anomaly rotating through Canada will also dive
southeastward, and the resulting trough axis is forecast to phase
with at least one of the aforementioned PV anomalies on Saturday.

At the surface, an initially quasistationary boundary will stretch
from the OK/KS border northeastward into northern MO and central IL
this morning. Model solutions show that this feature lifts slightly
back to the north and west as a warm front today, but it looks more
like the boundary becomes re-oriented rather than actually lifting.
A developing surface low induced by the approaching series of PV
anomalies then zips northeastward along the boundary on Friday night
which allows the front to sink southward as a cold front. By
Saturday, the front is forecast to be located well to the south of
the area, and a 1035 hPa surface high will be building into the
central CONUS in its wake.

Taken together, this means that several rounds of showers and
thunderstorms are likely until the cold front has moved through the
region on Saturday.

The first concern is the potential for severe weather this afternoon
and evening. Although surface-based instability looks minimal,
models show very steep H7-H5 lapse rates of up to 8+ deg C/km
spreading eastward across parts of MO this afternoon and evening
along with around 20-30 kts of 0-6km shear. Although the shear
values are higher farther to the west, such steep lapse rates would
yield sufficient elevated instability for TSRA and would support
large hail in a few of the strongest storms.

The second concern is the potential for heavy rainfall. Forecast PW
values of 1-1.25" are at +2 SD for March, and a broad southwesterly
LLJ is forecast to develop tonight such that it is nearly parallel
to the H85 frontal boundary. Given the expectation for SHRA/TSRA to
repeatedly move over the same areas, a Flood Watch has been issued
for parts of central MO where 2-3" of rainfall is possible by
Saturday evening.

.LONG TERM...  (Saturday Night through Thursday)

Still expect mainly dry weather Saturday night through the middle of
next week.  Deterministic models and the GEFS are consistent in
showing the upper trough moving east of the area on Sunday with the
upper flow turning quasi-zonal early next week.  A large surface
high will move across Missouri and Illinois on Sunday night and
Monday.  While there is some minor differences with the timing and
and depth of a trough that the global models show moving through the
Midwest late next week, it still appears that this system will bring
a chance of showers to the area Wednesday night and Thursday.

GEFS temperatures will climb back up from below normal early next
week when high pressure will move across Missouri and Illinois to
above normal mid-late week once the high moves off to the east and
warmer air moves in from the southwest.

SPECIFICS FOR KCOU, KUIN: A stalled front will bring a prolonged
period of precipitation to both terminals during and beyond the
end of the valid TAF period. Showers and isolated thunderstorms
will develop and spread across the area with MVFR to IFR flight
conditions expected. Fog was also occurring ahead of the
precipitation (especially in central MO) and will reduce
visibilities during the first few hours of the valid TAF period.
The wind forecast for KCOU may vary quite a bit over the next
12-18 hours because the terminal is located near the stalled
front, and small changes in the front's position will bring
significant changes to the expected winds at KCOU.

SPECIFICS FOR KSTL, KSUS, KCPS: Showers and isolated
thunderstorms will spread across the area today with MVFR to IFR
flight conditions expected. Some fog was occurring ahead of the
precipitation and will reduce visibilities at KSUS and KCPS
during the first 0-4 hours of the valid TAF period. Precipitation
will continue beyond the end of the valid TAF period.

The primary threat will be large hail. Damaging winds will also be
possible over central Missouri.

Moderate to major river flooding is ongoing at points on the
Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri Rivers. See the appropriate

Major river flooding is expected to continue at Saverton Lock and
Dam on the Mississippi River and at Hardin along the Illinois River.
