.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday)

The first of two back to back shortwaves will cross the area this
morning. A strong FGEN induced band of snow is developing roughly
along I-80 early this morning, and will remain nearly stationary
from west to east through mid morning. Very high liquid to snow
ratios will allow snow to be fluffy and accumulate quickly.
Expecting about 2 to 3" of accumulation within this band through mid-
morning, and will likely see locally higher amounts which will be
mentioned in the ongoing winter weather advisory. The FGEN band
weakens late this morning and shifts northeast across central into
north central Nebraska. Snow will spread into these areas as this
occurs with a couple of inches expected. Snow will taper to light
this afternoon across southwest Nebraska where less than an inch of
additional accumulation is expected. Otherwise continued cold today,
with highs ranging from near 10 above across northern Nebraska to
upper teens in southwest Nebraska.

The second wave moves east across the Central and Southern Plains
tonight. Models agree that the heavier band of snow should remain
south in Kansas, but southwest Nebraska will see some snow. As far
as accumulations, along I-80 from Big Springs to Sutherland about 1
to 2 inches is currently expected. From Sutherland through Brady
about an inch, and 2 to 4 inches for areas south across Chase, Hayes
and Frontier counties. The other story tonight will be the very cold
temperatures, with lows as cold as 15 below across northwest
Nebraska with dangerously cold wind chills all areas.

Snow will end late tonight with mainly dry and very cold conditions
Sunday. A wind chill advisory is in effect through Sunday, with
highs struggling to reach 5 above across all areas of western and
north central Nebraska.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday)

A couple upper lows revolve around Hudson Bay next week, which help
dig a trough into the Great Lakes region. Meanwhile, an upper ridge
builds over the Intermountain West and expands onto the High Plains,
setting up primarily northwest flow for Nebraska. At the surface, a
broad area of high pressure sets up along the Rockies and High
Plains and eventually spreads into the Mississippi Valley. Overall,
the wintry pattern of periodic snow chances and near record cold
continues.

Guidance has trended even cooler for Sunday night/Monday morning in
the wake of this weekend's snow event and under the gaining
influence of the Arctic high. Northwest flow, H85 temps around
-20C, and a fresh snowpack will result in near record lows and cold
 highs. NAEFS ensembles continue to suggest temps in the low/mid
 levels near 1%ile of climo, indicating a very anomalous event.
 Forecast lows range from -8 to -15 Monday morning and with
 northwest winds up to 15 mph, wind chill values will approach
 -30 across the Sandhills. Will likely need to upgrade the newly
 issued Wind Chill Advisory to a warning after Sunday morning
 passes. Low level flow transitions to southerly midweek with
 modest WAA underway (H85 temps near -5C Wed and even above 0C
 late week). This should translate to highs in the 20s and lower
 30s, but may be a bit optimistic depending on lingering snow
 cover. The next chance of precipitation comes late Wed into Thu
 as a potent shortwave crosses the Plains. Thermal profiles
 suggest snow as the main p-type.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon)

The main aviation concern will the continued chance of snow across
the region into Sunday morning. At KLBF, light snow will come to
an end in the next few hours with a brief break before snow moves
back in early Saturday evening. Expect reductions in visibility in
snow showers. At KVTN, snow will continue through Saturday
afternoon before drier air moves in from the north pushing snow to
the south. Ceilings at KVTN will rise above 5000 feet by 08Z
Sunday. Ceilings will remain at or below 3000 feet at KLBF through
the TAF period.

Snow will spread northeast across all of western and north central
Nebraska today, and then continue across mainly southwest
Nebraska tonight. Accumulations of 3 to 5 inches with locally
higher amounts are expected across portions of west central and
southwest Nebraska, with 1 to 4 inches across central into north

further details.

Bitterly cold winds chills can be expected across all of western
and north central Nebraska today and tonight.

Bitterly cold wind chills will continue both Sunday and Monday.
