the local area. Later this week Hurricane Humberto will also add
swell across the area. This will create a high risk of rip

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Tropical wave moving through the local area brought
abundant moisture, showers and thunderstorms today, expected to
move out the local area on Tuesday. Upper Low is causing
instability across the local area today. Surface high pressure to
keep easterly wind flow through Wednesday, turning southeasterly
on Thursday. Drier air with Saharan dust expected by Wednesday
into early Thursday.

.SHORT TERM...This afternoon through Wednesday.

The tropical wave that is moving in has brought showers and
thunderstorms to the USVI, local waters and eastern PR in the
morning and early afternoon hours. The deep moisture associated
with the wave is moving in and is combining with an upper level
low that is north of the local area causing divergence aloft. The
moisture advection at the time of max heating combined with the
upper level instability will help produce showers and
thunderstorms across western PR later this afternoon. However,
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are affecting the
eastern portions of PR but they are moving west and thus not
causing as much accumulations as what is expected over western PR.
After the activity over western PR this afternoon, the shower and
thunderstorm activity is expected to prevail through tonight,
especially across the local waters and eastern PR as well as some
parts of the USVI.

The tropical wave is expected to move out of the local area by
Tuesday afternoon and drier air will be moving in at that time.
Saharan dust will then move in and the shower activity is
expected to be limited late Tuesday into Wednesday.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday...

.From previous discussion...

The confidence is low-medium through the long-term forecast
because the weather conditions will depend on Humberto's final
track and the evolution of Invest 97L. However, model guidance
are suggesting dry air moving from the northeast and tropical
moisture approaching from the southeast into the region by
Thursday afternoon. Residual moisture associated with this
tropical perturbation will persist through at least Friday.

The tropical disturbance, Invest 97L, is forecast to approach the
Lesser Antilles by Saturday, increasing the available moisture
across the region. Based on the latest model guidance, this
tropical disturbance will move off to the north of the islands
pulling abundant tropical moisture over Puerto Rico and the U.S.
Virgin Islands throughout the weekend. If model are correct,
deep tropical moisture combined with local effects and diurnal
heating will aid in the development of showers and thunderstorms
through at least Sunday. A seasonal weather pattern is forecast
to return by the beginning of next work-week.

.AVIATION...Areas of Sct SHRA/TSRA will continue to affect the area
with MVFR conditions possible at times. Conditions will improve
across the Leeward Island and western PR terminals after 16/22z.
Areas of SHRA and possibly isolated TS may continue near the
vicinity of TJSJ/TISX/TIST through 17/06z. Winds will continue from
the E-ESE between 10 and 20 kts with higher gusts, especially in
areas of TSRA, with sea breeze variations through 16/22z. Winds will
become light and variable overnight.

.MARINE...A series of swells are expected to arrive across the
local area over the next few days. These swells will cause
hazardous seas from Tuesday into the rest of the workweek. Small
craft advisories will go into effect starting on Tuesday morning
across some of the local waters. There is a high risk of rip
currents for tonight across the north coast of Puerto Rico and
Culebra.

Humedad tropical profunda esta pronasticado a regresar al area tarde
esta semana hasta el fin de semana, aumentando la actividad de

inundaciones urbanas y de riachuelos aumentara durante el periodo.

At 224 PM AST, strong thunderstorms were clustered over Cabo Rojo
and neighboring municipalities, moving northwest at 10-15 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph and pea size hail are possible with this
storm.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause
localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.
