Issued at 930 PM CST Thu Jan 17 2019 Added patchy fog to the forecast tonight to areas from the IL river valley southeast. Otherwise rest of the forecast looks on track with cloudy skies continuing and wnw winds 5 to 10 mph this evening, becoming light overnight. Temps currently in the lower 30s over central IL and mid 30s in southeast IL. Lows by dawn to range from lower 20s nw of the IL river, to around 30F in southeast IL. A cold front had pushed southeast of IL into central KY and nw TN. A 1034 mb Canadian high pressure over northern Alberta and Saskatchewan and nosing sse into the eastern Dakotas and far western IA/MO. The high pressure ridge axis to shift eastward into central IL by dawn with wnw winds becoming light to calm as high pressure ridge moves in. Models showing low clouds decreasing a bit nw of the IL river toward sunrise, but mid/high clouds to quickly spread in from the west over the IL river valley by mid Friday morning. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday) ISSUED AT 303 PM CST Thu Jan 17 2019 Areas of dense fog continue to affect much of the area southeast of a Bloomington to Jacksonville line. The trend should be for visibilities to improve as a shortwave trough and surface low shift farther east of the area later this afternoon into this evening. Current dense fog advisory ends at 00z and based on latest hi-res guidance feel conditions should be improving by that time. Will monitor trends for need to extend advisory over the eastern CWA. For tonight through the early portions of Friday, a narrow high pressure ridge builds over the area. This will bring quiet weather and light winds. Forecast sounding suggest low clouds remain trapped under the subsidence inversion, limiting diurnal temp ranges. This results in lows in the mid 20s to near 30 tonight, and upper 20s to mid 30s highs on Friday. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) ISSUED AT 303 PM CST Thu Jan 17 2019 A winter storm will bear down on the region for the second weekend in a row. Winter storm watch has been issued 00z/Sat to 00z/Sun along and north of the I-72 corridor, and 06z/Sat to 06z/Sun farther south to a Shelbyville to Paris line. 12z models have come into somewhat better agreement with both the NAM and GFS/GEFS indicating a farther north low track from northern Arkansas into northern Kentucky on Saturday. EC continues to be the farther south of the operational models but agreement on mass fields is improved. Still some phasing issue to be sorted out over the next few model runs and expect some fine-tuning to precip type locations and snowfall amounts. Initial band of mid- level frontogenesis looks to focus snow to our northwest Friday afternoon, with isentropic lift ahead of the approaching shortwave and surface low pressure systems quickly increasing precip across the CWA Friday evening. The slight northern shift in the low track results in stronger WAA occurring farther north and suggests a narrow zone of freezing rain possible at the onset south of I-72 and north of I-70. This would continue into early Saturday morning before changing over to snow as cold advection increases with backing low level flow. One to two tenth inch ice accumulations are possible focused on a Taylorville to Charleston line before changing over to snow. Farther north, all snow is expected with widespread 4-6" accumulations. While this is on the lower end of traditional warning criteria, strong north to northeast winds will result from tightening MSLP gradient between 1000 mb low to our south and 1038 mb high pressure nosing into the northern Plains. This will cause gusts up to 35 mph mid- morning through late Saturday afternoon which will create blowing and drifting snow. Snow is expected to diminish from the northwest later Saturday afternoon over much of the watch area, and during the evening over the southern section of the watch. South of I-70, rain will be the predominant p-type until CAA eventual forces a changeover Saturday afternoon. Much lower storm total snowfall is forecast here, at 1-2". 12z models have continued to back off the the magnitude of CAA behind this system for Saturday night through Sunday night. 850 mb temps now progged into the lower teens C, resulting in single digit to lower teen mins Sunday and Monday morning. Winds do not go completely calm with the ridge axis forecast to pass through the Great Lakes. This drops min wind chills to 0 to -10F Monday morning. The cold shot looks to be brief though, as warm advection quickly commences Monday ahead of the next approaching system. Plenty of time to assess track and timing details, but this looks to be another significant system for the Tuesday to Wednesday timeframe. Upper air pattern currently favors a farther northwest low path than the weekend system, which would put more of the area on the warm side of the low. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night) Issued at 1155 PM CST Thu Jan 17 2019 MVFR ceilings will tend to lower toward IFR at times after 09Z and some fog could lower vsbys to MVFR especially se of the IL river. The fog should lift during Fri morning, while low stratus clouds likely linger during the day Friday with ceilings ranging from 500 to 1500 ft. Light snow to spread eastward toward the IL river/PIA between 8-9 pm Saturday, to I-55 around 10 pm and reaching DEC and CMI around or shortly after midnight Fri night. Vsbys will lower to 1-2 miles with the snow at PIA, BMI and SPI during mid/late Fri evening with ceilings lower to 300-600 ft. WNW winds around 5 kts early overnight to become light and variable during overnight into early Friday morning as high pressure ridge axis shifts eastward into IL.
