Issued at 312 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2019 This evening, an upper level disturbance approaching the area from the west, will bring more widespread rainfall. As colder air filters in on increasing northwest winds, the rain will turn to snow. Accumulating snow is expected for much of central and northern Illinois tonight and Thursday. Blustery and cold weather will dominate the area Thursday evening. && .UPDATE... Issued at 811 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2019 No major changes to going forecast for the overnight hours, though some concerns persist. Showers have developed west of the Illinois River Valley this evening and will continue to spread east. Precip has already transitioned over to snow from Galesburg through Macomb and should see areas west of the Illinois River Valley transition over by around midnight. Trends will have to be monitored overnight with respect to the depth of the saturated layer. Main concern is that several models indicate a narrow mid level dry slot will punch across the Illinois River Valley overnight, resulting in loss of ice nuclei at times, particularly between 06-12Z tonight. This would transition precip back to liquid drizzle and cut down on snow amounts. As is typical with mixed precip scenarios, it's the difference of only a degree or two which doesn't lend much in the way of confidence to make large scale changes to the forecast at this time. Regardless of how precip pans out overnight, still appears the best snow production will occur from the predawn hours through the morning Thursday. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) ISSUED AT 312 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2019 Winter weather advisory has been issued from 10 PM this evening until 4 PM Thursday roughly along and north of a Beardstown to Bloomington line. Deep positive tilt 500 MB trough extending from the northern Plains back into eastern CO, will shift east into the area tonight and Thursday. A closed mid level circulation is forecast to develop and slowly deepen as it crosses north central IL 18Z/Thu. As this occurs surface low pressure well to our southeast will strengthen, causing a tightening pressure gradient and increasing northwest winds. So as rain overspreads from the west this evening, cold advection will begin to drive the thermal profile below freezing from the northwest. Forecast soundings indicate a brief freezing rain or sleet transition possible. We expect the rain/snow line to reach the IL River towards midnight, and east towards I-55 near daybreak. Snow will then gradually taper off from the southwest through midday and early afternoon as the upper forcing shifts northeast. 2-4" totals are expected in the advisory area, with 4-5"+ totals across the far north, Galesburg through Lacon areas. Lighter amounts towards 1" are forecast near the I-72 corridor. As the surface low deepens towards the eastern Great Lakes tomorrow afternoon, 30-35 MPH gusts will be common. One area of concern is in the far north, if higher snowfall rates occur widespread higher totals could be towards warning criteria. A couple model solutions support this. Another concern just southeast of the advisory, roughly Jacksonville through Danville where current forecasts are an inch or less. If a faster snow transition occurs here amounts would need to be raised and an advisory considered. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 312 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2019 Thursday night will see the coldest temperatures of the season with a hard freeze across the entire area. Snow covered areas will drop into the teens to lower 20s. Wind speeds look to decrease overnight as the gradient relaxes. Wind chills during the evening will be teens to lower 20s. A freeze watch remains in effect for southeast IL, where sub-freezing temperatures have not been observed this season. Farther north the growing season has ended an freeze headlines will resume in spring. Friday through this weekend, an upper level trof dominates the Midwest and Great Lakes, while a large surface ridge passes to our south. This to keep below normal temps and dry weather in place. Early next week, low pressure is forecast to track into the Great Lakes. This would bring return southwest flow, and warming temperatures locally on Monday. Cold front progged into the region Tuesday, and this is our next chance of rain. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Thursday evening) Issued at 619 PM CDT Wed Oct 30 2019 Wintry weather will serve as the primary forecast challenge across central Illinois. Drizzle and light rain is already beginning to spread east across central Illinois early this evening and will continue to expand in coverage and intensity through the remainder of the evening. Winds are expected to back from the north to the northwest and gradually pick up in magnitude overnight with gusts into the 20-30 kt range much of the period overnight through the day Thursday, peaking Thursday afternoon. This will spread cooler temps into the region allowing precip to transition over to snow overnight into Thursday morning.
