* SURF ZONE IMPACTS...Southeasterly winds 15-25 MPH will develop
  during the day on Saturday. This will lead to the development of
  a strong south to north longshore current at east-facing
  beaches. In addition, a moderate risk of rip currents exist at
  the aforementioned beaches on Saturday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip 
currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas. Often, if the
longshore current is strong enough, it will sweep swimmers off 
their feet, making it difficult to return to shore.

A Beach Hazards Statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents, longshore currents, and other hazards create life-
threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution should be used
when in or near the water.

* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Water as deep around 1 foot covering
  portions of Battleship Road and USS North Carolina Road. Water
  over 6 inches deep along River Road about a quarter mile south
  of The Cape Boulevard in downtown Wilmington. Water covering
  more than 2 blocks of Water Street near Market Street with as 
  much as a foot of water in the center of Water Street just south
  of Market Street.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or
imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert
for rising water, and take appropriate action to protect life and
property.

Coastal Flood Warning to a Coastal Flood Advisory, which is now 
in effect until 2 AM EDT early this morning.

* LOCATIONS...Inland New Hanover.

* TIMING...Until 2 AM EDT early this morning.

* COASTAL FLOOD IMPACTS...Water is slowly receding with one half
  foot deep water on the lowest parts of Battleship Road and USS
  North Carolina Road. Water will spread on portions of River Road
  especially south of The Cape Boulevard. In downtown Wilmington,
  one quarter to one half foot of water will cover portions of
  Water Street.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that tide levels on the Lower
Cape Fear River will run higher than the norm as strong onshore 
winds combine with 1 inch plus rainfall upstream.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Breezy with showers and isolated thunderstorms through this
evening. Drying into Saturday with easing wind late Saturday
through early next. A warming trend is expected much of the
upcoming week, especially mid to late week, as temperatures
rise to above normal.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Wind Advisory cancelled as speed intensity wanes enough. 2nd
line of convection to pass through, diurnal cooling not helping,
but lapse rates aloft higher, so isolated TSTMs retained this
evening, but 'tornado watch' is cancelled. Drying after 6z.

Once the front passes, much drier air will spread over the area
from the south. Atypical cold advection with southwest flow
spreading cold air into the area late tonight into Sat. Although
cold air starts to arrive tonight the lag in cold air and
relatively strong boundary layer mixing will keep lows above
climo.

Skies clear out overnight, but as the cold pool and moisture aloft
swing through during the day and surface heating commences expect
skies will start to cloud over. Increasing cloud cover and cold
advection will keep highs in the mid to upper 60s, especially
inland. Instability showers may develop Sat afternoon and continue
into the evening as the cold pool aloft passes just northwest of the
area. Right now shower chances are on the low side, but if core of
the cold air ends up a little closer coverage could be significantly
increased. Also have the potential for small hail with any showers
that develop given thermal profiles in the afternoon and evening.
Period ends with cold pool north of the area and development of weak
warm advection. Winds Sat night will be on the light side and skies
will clear with the loss of heating, allowing for some radiational
cooling and lows below climo.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Sunday through Monday cold pool aloft to migrate from the Mid
Atlantic to New England with plentiful dry mid level air rushing
in around the southern periphery to provide fair conditions.
This to bring precipitation-free weather this period,
seasonable with a warming trend. Sunday morning, as diurnal
warming begins, lapse rates and lower moisture from the
transiting upper trough axis, could generate isolated showers SE
NC, drying otherwise.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A fair period, because of dry air in general perched above 6000
feet. A weakening front to approach Friday, possibly crossing
the coast. Temperatures to make a climb through mid-week, above
normal Wed-Fri, slight cooling possible into next weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 00Z...Line of showers and storms continues to move
offshore, but a plume of secondary moisture will continue to
move northward over KSUT and bring heavy showers to ILM. Another
line of weak showers will move through the terminals through
03Z with MVFR conditions possible. Clouds will break and VFR
conditions will prevail after 06Z with winds from the southeast
at 10-20 knots across the area with gusts up to 25 knots. Clear
skies and windy conditions continue through the forecast period.

Extended Outlook...Spotty MVFR should give way to VFR conditions
by early Saturday morning and continuing thru Tue.

.MARINE...
Strong SW flow continues this evening, supporting continuation
of the Gale Warning through at least the evening hours. Once the
front pushes offshore winds should veer to west- southwest with
a slight reduction in speed. At that point the Gale Warning
will probably be dropped in favor of a Small Craft Advisory,
with both winds and seas requiring the headline through Sat and
into Sat night. Offshore flow does slowly decrease during Sat
but winds remain southwest into Sat night before true offshore
flow develops. Seas well in excess of 10 ft this evening start a
slow decreasing trend around midnight, but it will take until
Sat night before seas drop under 6 ft.

Sunday Through Tuesday
This marine period is a favorable one, because of a diminishing
wind trend. Early in the period seas will be elevated from a
departing storm system, so advisories are possible early Sunday.
Mainly weak SE swell with light to moderate S-SW wind chop this
period, no TSTMs and no restrictions to visibility expected.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Combination of strong southerly flow, anticipated heavy rain
this evening, and astronomical high tide will result in water
levels along the lower Cape Fear River at Wilmington exceeding
coastal flood warning thresholds this evening. Current tide
forecast is just under warning threshold, but the tidal anomaly
has been increasing, in part due to increasing southerly flow.
Next several high tides may require a coastal flood advisory,
but at this point it does not appear additional warnings will be
needed.

At 615 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near
Edgecomb, or near Surf City, moving northeast at 45 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm.

Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Surf City, Rich Inlet, Figure Eight
Island, Hampstead, Topsail Beach, Mayfaire, Maple Hill, Murrayville,
Topsail, Windemere, Bayshore, Scotts Hill, Ogden, Porters Neck,
