.Lake effect snow will develop late tonight with a heavy 
southwest to northeast oriented band setting up near the 
Pennyslvania portion of the Lake Erie shoreline on Friday. 
Uncertainty remains in the exact position of this band but heavy 
snow will occur if the band moves onshore. The band will shift 
north over Lake Erie on Friday night. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 
mph with gusts to 35 mph can also be expected.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front over the mid-Atlantic states will shift east as an
arctic cold front moves through the central Great Lakes. The
arctic front will move across the area tonight with a trough
lingering across the eastern Great Lakes on Friday. A weak area
of low pressure will move east through the Ohio Valley on
Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...

Minor changes were made to the afternoon forecast to account for
current conditions and trends. Temperatures are holding near
steady as the arctic cold front approaches. The front is near
CHI with a bit of clearing or breaks in the overcast in Indiana
but this is fleeting and likely not be seen in Ohio. Areas of
flurries or very light snow showers prevail from just east of
CLE to YNG. These showers should diminish through the afternoon.

Previous discussion...
Snow continues across far Northeast Ohio and Northwest
Pennsylvania but will be exiting to the east through 10 AM.
Snowfall across the east has ranged from 0.5-2.0 inches and
portions of inland PA could see another 1-2" in that time. The
thin coating of snow and temperatures falling into the upper 20s
is contributing to slick conditions.

Allowed the Flood Watch to expire as we transition over to snow
early this morning. We still have rises occurring on several
area rivers and that will continue today as run-off channels
into area waterways. River Flood Warnings have been issued for 9
rivers already with ice jams occurring on the Chagrin and
Vermilion Rivers. With temperatures falling back below freezing
it is possible that these jams strengthen and persist.

Surface analysis shows a trough across Upper Michigan. This trough
will pull a stronger cold front across the area tonight with lake
effect snow developing behind it with west to southwest flow across
Lake Erie. The snow will be a little more widespread with the
passage of the front then forming into a stronger single band that
is expected to set up near or just offshore on Friday. Initial
expectations are for this band to set up east of the City of Erie,
with the heaviest snow focused into New York. The far northeast
portion of the county stands the best chance to see 6 or more inches
of snow but any fluctuation to the south could impact more of the
area. Issued a Winter Storm Watch given the uncertainty with the
placement of this band and potential for high snowfall rates if it
does move onshore.

In addition to the snow, much colder air arrives again behind the
front. Wind chill values will fall to between 0 and 15 below on
Friday morning and a portion of the area may need a Wind Chill
Advisory although the window of the -10 wind chills appears to be 4
hours or less. High temperatures on Friday will only be in the
teens.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Lake effect snow will be ongoing in NW PA on Friday night, but flow
will begin to shift more to the southwest over the region and snow
should lift north into the lake and western New York. This will be
in response to an upper trough and a weak surface low that will
ripple through the Great Lakes region for Saturday. This low is not
very impressive, but will bring a widespread chance for snow on
Saturday and disrupt any organized lake effect. The low itself will
depart the region by Sunday, but some residual snow may continue
over the area with the upper trough remaining over the region and
perhaps some favorable flow from some lake effect. Temperatures
through the period will be below normal with highs in the 20s. Lows
on Saturday night will be in the teens across the area with cloud
cover and possible snow about the area. Lows will crash on Sunday
night into the single digits as conditions clear between
systems.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
It appears to be a frigid and snowy end of January for northern Ohio
and NW PA. A stronger clipper system appears to take aim on the
region on Monday night into Tuesday. The extended guidance provides
several different solutions to the track, timing, and evolution of
this system, so too early to talk about snow amounts or impacts at
this point. However, it does appear that there will be plenty of
synoptic moisture moving in ahead of this system, so while clipper
systems tend to be drier in nature, this one brings a bit more
confidence in widespread snowfall, so continued with the likely pops
across the area. As the system departs, there could be some lake
effect snow in the typical snow belt regions, but the air mass dries
out considerably so will keep pop chances low.

While the snow with this system will be notable, the big concern
will be arctic temperatures surging in behind this low. By Wednesday
afternoon, 850 mb temperatures of -25 to -30C!!!! will be moving
over the region and temperatures will struggle to reach zero for
highs on Wednesday. Temperatures below zero seem fairly probable at
this point on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with this arctic air

.AVIATION /18Z Thursday THROUGH Tuesday/...
Minor improvement in conditions has taken place this morning
near Lake Erie with the movement of deeper moisture off to the
east with the exiting cold front. Generally MVFR conditions
prevail across the region with ceilings from 1500-2500 feet.
Locally worse conditions near YNG with IFR with lingering snow
showers. The next feature to tack is the approaching cold front
from just east of CHI to near STL. There is a narrow band of
thinner clouds with breaks ahead of the front over Indiana but
this will likely fill in as it approaches Ohio. Ceilings behind
the cold front are similar to those in place across the region
now so we don't expect much change through Friday. Lingering
flurries or light snow showers can not be ruled out. West to
southwest winds will increase to 15-20 knots and become gusty
with the cold frontal passage toward morning.

OUTLOOK...Non-VFR continues through most of the time through the
weekend with occasional snow.

.MARINE...
Some persistent northwest winds across the eastern half of Lake Erie
this morning have allowed for higher waves to continue east of
Cleveland. With west winds to increase throughout the day and
persist through Friday, have gone ahead and extended the Small Craft
Advisory through 7 AM Saturday morning, or through the near shore
forecast period. Could certainly see the need to extend this into
the future. With the approaching low pressure system on Friday,
southwest winds on the lake will be quite strong up to 30 knots.
There is a chance for gales but, confidence isn't there at this
point. Winds will relax between systems on Friday night into
Saturday before low pressure system #2 reaches the area on Sunday,
increasing winds over the lake. This system will depart Sunday
night, bringing a reprieve for Sunday night into Monday. A third and
stronger low pressure system will reach the Great Lakes on Monday
night and impact the Lake Erie region into Tuesday.
