Erie this evening today through Friday morning...

.A strong area of low pressure will undergo rapid deepening as it
moves northeast into Ontario tonight, pulling a strong cold front
east across Lake Erie. Storm force winds are expected on the
eastern half of Lake Erie with sustained winds to 50 knots and
gusts up to 60 knots. Winds to 40 to 45 knots are likely on the
western half of Lake Erie. Significant waves of 14 to 20 feet are
also expected on the east half of the lake.

* WINDS...West 15 to 25 kt with gusts up to 30 kt.

* WAVES...4 to 7 feet.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Small Craft Advisory is issued when waves of 4 feet or more are
expected or wind speeds reach 21 to 33 knots which may produce
hazardous conditions to small craft. Inexperienced mariners,
especially those operating smaller vessels, should stay in port
during these conditions.

.SYNOPSIS...
A deepening low pressure center over southwest Ohio will
progress north today into southern Ontario by tonight. High
pressure builds across the Ohio Valley on Friday and to the
mid-Atlantic by Saturday morning. A cold front will move east
across the area on Saturday, followed by high pressure over the
Ohio Valley on Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Significant low level moisture through about 850mb, aided by
rainfall over the past 24 hours, and light winds have allowed
areas of drizzle and fog to form this morning across much of
Ohio. Drizzle and fog will persist through much of this morning
as conditions aren't expected to change too much until
widespread rain arrives from the west later this morning.

Low pressure is currently over southwest Ohio with a stationary
front extending north and northeast across northwest Ohio and
Lake Erie. A prolific upper level trough lifting across the
lower Great Lakes will cause this area of low will rapidly
deepen from its current pressure of 1008 mb to around 990 mb as
it propagates north into southern Ontario by 00Z Friday.
Isentropic lift associated with the warm conveyor belt with
provide warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and large scale
forcing for ascent across the region today. This will result in
widespread rain showers overspreading the region from west to
east today. Radar observations currently show the precipitation
shield leading edge approaching the Indiana/Ohio border and
should cross I-75 by 10Z, I-77 by 12Z and into northwest
Pennsylvania by 14Z. The low pressure center crosses northeast
Ohio and Lake Erie between 18Z and 21Z later this afternoon.
This will allow a cold front to progress from west to east, with
the cold front into western New York by 21Z. A significant dry
slot is expected to develop in the southwest quadrant of the
low, immediately behind the cold front. This will result in
several hours of dry conditions (or at least drier) for much of
northern Ohio during peak trick-or-treating. Wrap-around
moisture will result in scattered rain/snow showers for a few
more hours after 00Z Friday before lake effect rain/snow showers
develop. In total, an additional half inch to an inch of rain is
expected through Friday morning.

The other major outcome of the deepening low pressure are the
strong westerly winds behind the cold front. As the strong
upper level trough lifts northeast tonight, the surface low
pressure center undergoes additional cyclogenesis, which will
strengthen the low level winds. Winds of 40 to 50 knots
develop south of the low at 925 mb. With strong cold air
advection and mixed layer heights potentially to 900 mb, it
won't be hard for these strong winds to mix down to the surface.
As a result, widespread wind gusts in excess of 40 knots will
be likely tonight, especially between 00Z and 09Z Friday. For
this reason, a Wind Advisory has been issued for the entirety of
our forecast area tonight. Even higher wind gusts may be
observed along the lakeshore, especially for Erie (PA),
Ashtabula, and Lake Counties.

Lake effect snow/rain showers transition back to all rain late
Friday morning before slowly decreasing in intensity and
coverage during the day Friday. Lake effect should be completely
done by 00Z when the 850 mb ridge axis crosses the lake and
when warmer temperatures aloft come in. Clouds will decrease in
coverage from west to east as high pressure builds in on Friday.
High temperatures will be in the low to mid 40s, which is about
10 to 15 degrees below average.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure over the Ohio Valley will shift east on Saturday ahead
of the next trough to approach the Great Lakes Region. Friday night
will start of mostly clear with good cooling conditions and interior
areas dipping below 30 degrees in some areas. Low pressure will pass
north of the Great Lakes on Saturday, pulling a cold front east
across the area. Although a few sprinkles or light showers are
possible inland with the front, better chances of precipitation will
be focused across and downwind of Lake Erie with westerly flow
developing. 850mb temperatures fall to as low as -8C over Lake Erie
which results in good instability through 10k and possibly 15k feet.
Deeper moisture will only be over the lake through about midnight
before shifting east with the upper trough axis. However
unidirectional westerly flow across Lake Erie, and possibly some
moisture off of Lake Michigan, should result in precipitation bands
setting up Saturday night and lingering into Sunday morning for
lakeshore counties east of Cleveland. Temperatures will be critical
during this time frame as highs on Saturday will be in the mid 40s
ahead of the front but forecast to reach the lower to mid 30s by
Sunday morning. Locations immediately along the lakeshore may stay a
touch too warm to see any accumulating snow but inland areas should
transition at some point and see the first light accumulation of the
season. Initial forecast estimates are only for light accumulations
of up to a few inches in some of the higher terrain of mainly
northern Geauga, Ashtabula, Erie PA, and Crawford PA. However a lot
of this depends on how heavy and persistent the precipitation bands
are, especially during the second half of the night as temperatures
fall low enough for snow. We will be monitoring moisture
availability, wind direction, and temperatures closely, especially
as high resolution model data becomes available over the coming days.

Winds on Lake Erie back through the day on Saturday pushing any
lingering lake effect showers out over the lake. Highs on Sunday
will be approximately 10 degrees below normal across the region.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Large area of high pressure will shift from the Ohio Valley to the
New England coast through Monday. Southwest flow, ridging aloft, and
partly sunny skies will allow temperatures to trend warmer on
Monday. Another area of low pressure will move northeast through the
Great Lakes on Tuesday bringing the next chance of showers.

.AVIATION /06Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
All TAF sites are under at least IFR CIGs with the exception of
KERI. Downsloping southerly winds are keeping CIGs higher at
KERI for the time being. IFR CIGs with periods of MVFR and IFR
visibilities associated with fog and drizzle will persist
through almost the entirety of the TAF period. Widespread rain
shower returns to TAF sites tomorrow morning toward northwest
Ohio and late morning into the early afternoon for northeast
Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania as low pressure crosses Ohio. As
low pressure pulls off to the north, very strong westerly winds
develop Thursday night, mainly after 00Z Friday. Sustained
westerly winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 40 knots will
be possible through at least 06Z Friday.

.OUTLOOK...Non-VFR conditions and gusty winds possible Thursday
and Friday with a low pressure system moving across the region.
Non-VFR will also be possible with showers on Saturday and
Saturday night.

.MARINE...
A high end Gale Warning is in effect for Lake Erie tonight into
Friday afternoon. Broad low pressure over the southern Great Lakes
will rapidly deepen tonight as it tracks northeast into Ontario
pulling a strong cold front east across Lake Erie. Southwest gales
to 35 knots will develop rapidly late this afternoon into this
evening, becoming west to 40 knots on the western basin and 45 knots
on the eastern end of the lake. It is not out of the question that
the far east end of Lake Erie could approach storm force for a
couple hours and models trends and observations will continue to be
monitored. The high winds will generate waves as high as 12-18 feet
on the east end of the lake. Prolonged southwest flow will also
result in low water conditions on the western basin and a Low Water
Advisory is in effect 5 PM this evening to 9 AM Friday. Latest
models show the lowest water levels occurring towards the midnight-2
AM window. Winds will decrease through the day on Friday as the
system pulls away with high pressure building into the Ohio Valley.

Another cold front will sweep east across Lake Erie on Saturday with
westerly winds of 20-25 knots developing which will likely lead to
Small Craft Advisories on the east half of the lake. High pressure
will build into the Ohio Valley again on Sunday with south to
southwest flow of 10-20 knots expected for the second half of the
weekend into early next week.
