Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Buffalo NY 146 AM EDT Thu Mar 14 2019 .SYNOPSIS... A strengthening southerly flow between an exiting area of high pressure and a powerful storm over the central plains will usher a Springlike airmass into our region for Thursday...as temperatures will soar well into the 50s and 60s. The brief spell of very mild weather will be accompanied by some rain showers...but the day will be far from a washout. The first of several cold fronts will plow across our region Thursday night and Friday...effectively bringing an end to our Springlike weather. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Abundant cloud cover in association with moderately strong warm advection will continue to shroud our region overnight. Temperatures will remain steady or gradually rise due to an increasing southerly flow which will mix the boundary layer and hinder radiational cooling. We can then anticipate a notably milder day for Thursday. A southwest flow aloft will pump 850 mb temperatures to and above +12C. This will support afternoon temps in the low to mid 60s across the western counties...the warmest since the first half of October when there were widespread temps in the 70s and 80s. The mercury across the North Country should climb into at least the mid to upper 50s. Given the south to southeast flow in the lower part of the boundary layer...the risk for any lake cooling will be negated. There will also be some downsloping to add to a well mixed environment. This will particularly be the case across the Niagara Frontier, Rochester Area, and areas north of the Tug Hill, where compressional downslope warming will be most effective. As a warm front that ushers in the warm advection moves northward on Thursday, a weak short wave looks to advance northward as the mid-level ridge pushes east of the area. Some showers seem set to blossom along this boundary as it advances through western New York and the northern Finger Lakes, however as we enter fully into the warm sector by late afternoon and evening, these should gradually subside in the interim between the warm frontal passage and the cold front that will arrive Thursday night. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... Thursday night the strong low over the central portion of the nation will elongate, begin to weaken, and move to near the southern tip of James Bay by Friday morning. A trailing surface cold front will cross the area from west to east late Thursday night and Friday morning. There may still be a few areas of showers Thursday evening across the region, supported by ongoing warm advection and increasing large scale ascent ahead of the mid level trough. The most widespread rain will occur just ahead of the cold front where low level convergence and moisture transport is maximized. This area of steadier rain will arrive in Western NY by late evening, then spread east across the region overnight, reaching the eastern Lake Ontario region before daybreak Friday. Model guidance continues to suggest a line of strong to severe convection will develop upstream across portions of Indiana, Ohio, and southern Lower Michigan Thursday afternoon just ahead of the cold front. Instability will be much more limited by the time the front approaches Western NY late Thursday evening due to unfavorable diurnal timing and a cooler airmass in general in our region. This will likely allow the line of convection to weaken prior to reaching Western NY, although a few scattered thunderstorms are possible. The wind field aloft is very strong, so any storms that do develop may produce gusty winds. The severe weather chances in our region are low, but non-zero given the strong wind field available. Temperatures will stay in the 50s in most areas through much of Thursday night, with Western NY dropping back into the 40s before daybreak Friday following the frontal passage. Central NY and the eastern Lake Ontario region will stay warm through midday Friday before temperatures begin to drop in the afternoon as cold advection increases. Showers will end from west to east Friday morning with the passage of the cold front. Wrap around moisture will arrive later in the afternoon across Western NY, allowing a few scattered showers to re- develop. It will turn quite windy behind the cold front Friday, especially in the typical areas northeast of Lake Erie. BUFKIT soundings continue to show 45-50 knots available in the 2-5K foot layer, and this may produce wind gusts in the 45-50 mph range at the surface from the Lake Erie shore northeast across the Niagara Frontier. Friday night a secondary cold front will cross the area, along with deeper wrap around moisture and ascent associated with the main mid level trough. The arrival of forcing and moisture will allow showers to increase in coverage during the evening, with rain transitioning to snow overnight as the boundary layer cools in a fairly strong cold advection regime. There may be a coating of accumulation overnight at lower elevations and up to an inch across higher terrain. The deepest wrap around moisture will depart by Saturday, but cold cyclonic northwest flow and some limited lake instability will continue to support scattered to numerous snow showers southeast of the lakes with some minor additional accumulations possible. It will remain quite blustery, with gusts in the 25 to 35 mph range, strongest near the lakes and across higher terrain. Highs will only reach the mid 30s at lower elevations and around 30 across higher terrain, back to below normal following a few warm days. && .LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... A chilly northwest flow will remain in place across the eastern Great Lakes Saturday night and Sunday as high pressure builds into the Ohio Valley. Enough marginal lake instability will remain to support a few scattered snow showers southeast of the lakes, with little in the way of additional accumulation. Temperatures will remain below normal, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s for most areas. A northern stream shortwave will drop south-southeast from James Bay through Quebec Canada and then across the lower Great Lakes beginning Sunday night through Monday. Meanwhile, a weak wave will also be in the process of round the base of the mid-level trough Sunday night. With cold northerly flow (H850T -13C to -15C) and the support from these shortwave a few more snow showers-flurries and limited lake enhanced snow will continue south-southeast of the lakes through Monday. After that, expect dry conditions with high pressure over the upper Midwest building east across the lower Great Lakes Monday night through Tuesday. Also, a gradual warming trend will initiate across the region with high temperatures approach near normal. Beyond Tuesday, significant differences arise among model guidance packages regarding the next system track and timing. Otherwise, look for daytime highs primarily in the 30s Monday, with a few upper 20s across the interior section (Tug Hill) east of Lake Ontario. Tuesday, temperatures will begin to climb back to near normal with highs peaking in the upper 30s to low 40s. Near normal afternoon highs can be anticipated Wednesday with temperatures in the 40s most locations. && .AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Expect predominantly VFR conditions for today. The first of several frontal boundaries will push across the state this afternoon and evening. There will be lower cigs and some showers with this, but still likely in the VFR flight category. A more significant frontal boundary will cross tonight, with widespread showers, and some gusty thunderstorms possible with this boundary. Also, winds aloft will increase ahead of this boundary, resulting in LLWS ahead of this front. Outlook... Friday...Mainly VFR...but with some showers east of Lake Ontario during the morning and in the far west late in the afternoon. Friday night...MVFR to IFR in widespread mixed precipitation. Saturday...MVFR in snow showers. Sunday...VFR. Monday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers. && .MARINE... A departing area of high pressure will bring a light southerly flow across the Eastern Great Lakes region through tonight. As a deep surface low advances across the Central Plains, the surface pressure gradient will gradually tighten across the Eastern Great Lakes region Thursday. While winds will freshen a bit as a result...a significant increase in wind speeds is not expected until the storm system moves across the Upper Great Lakes to western Quebec Thursday night and Friday with small craft advisories likely on the Lakes. && .HYDROLOGY... Warmer weather in the 50s is expected Thursday and Friday for the eastern Lake Ontario region. Snowmelt will increase, as well as a round of rainfall Thursday night and Friday. Rainfall amounts will not be significant with this system, around a half inch on average east of Lake Ontario. The warming temperatures will bring an elevated risk of ice break-up and movement. Cumulative Thawing Degree Hours will easily reach the threshold typically needed to cause river and creek ice to break up and start to move. This will bring some risk of ice jams to prone rivers east of Lake Ontario, but the lack of heavy rainfall will keep the risk of associated flooding more limited. Some of the higher elevations of the Tug Hill and western Foothills of the Adirondacks still have a significant snowpack of over two feet with water equivalents of 8 to 12 inches. The snowpack will initially absorb runoff and snowmelt, but eventually will begin to release water Thursday night and Friday. At this time, given the lack of significant rainfall, we are not expecting a significant flood risk. There is some low risk of flooding from ice jams, and there will be significant within- bank rises along the Black River by the weekend with this being a slow responding river. This potential will need to be monitored closely over the next few days.
