.SYNOPSIS...
The warmest temperatures of the year so far will move into the
region this afternoon. A cold front will cross the region tonight
and early Friday with a few rounds of showers and a chance of
thunderstorms. Gusty winds will develop along and behind the cold
front tonight and Friday, with the strongest winds northeast of
Lakes Erie and Ontario. Much colder air will move back into the
region Friday night through the weekend with light snow showers at
times.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Satellite imagery continues to show areas of dense cirrus crossing
the region early this afternoon. Mostly cloudy conditions will
continue through the afternoon with a few breaks of sunshine between
areas of thicker cloud cover. An area of showers over Lake Erie will
clip far Western NY this afternoon with a few brief periods of rain.
Otherwise the remainder of the area will stay dry through early this
evening. Temperatures will soar to the highest readings so far in
2019, with highs in the 60s on the lake plains of Western NY with an
added boost of southerly downslope flow, and 50s elsewhere.
A strong surface low will move from Wisconsin this evening to
western Quebec by Friday morning before reaching northern Quebec
Friday afternoon. A trailing cold front will cross the region very
late tonight through the first half of Friday. As is typically the
case, the best rain potential will be along a pre-frontal trough out
ahead of the cold front, and not along the cold front itself. Large
scale ascent will increase overnight ahead of a sharp, negatively
tilted mid level trough, and deep southerly flow will continue to
transport deeper moisture into the area. Convergence along the pre-
frontal trough will support a band of showers reaching Western NY
very late this evening or shortly after midnight, spreading to the
eastern Lake Ontario region before daybreak Friday.
The pre-frontal trough and strong dynamics will support an active
severe weather event to our west this afternoon and evening across
southern lower Michigan, Indiana, and western Ohio. By the time this
feature reaches Western NY after 03Z, most of the instability will
be gone given the unfavorable diurnal timing and less favorable
airmass in general across our region. Thus, expect strong to severe
convection to weaken prior to reaching Western NY. Nonetheless,
there may be just enough instability left to support a chance of a
few thunderstorms across Western NY late evening through the early
overnight. The thunder chances will likely end by the time the pre-
frontal trough moves east of the Genesee Valley. Given the very
strong wind field aloft, if any thunderstorms do develop they may
produce gusty winds. The risk of severe weather is low, but non-zero
across Western NY.
Showers will taper off from west to east late tonight and Friday
morning following the passage of the cold front. An expansive mid
level dry slot will then dominate most of the day across the eastern
Great Lakes with mainly dry conditions. Deeper wrap around moisture,
increasing ascent from the main mid level trough, and the approach
of a secondary cold front will bring a few showers back into Western
NY by mid to late afternoon.
It will turn quite windy again with this system, with winds coming
in two phases. A strong 60+ knot SSW low level jet will cross
Western NY tonight. The setup is not ideal for downslope winds,
given the orientation of the low level jet not perpendicular to the
terrain, and a relatively weak low level inversion. Nonetheless,
given the strength of the low level jet there may be a few gusts
over 45 mph tonight along the Lake Erie shore and northward facing
slopes of Chautauqua and southern Erie counties. The same downslope
wind setup will also develop east of Lake Ontario later tonight and
early Friday morning, with wind gusts of over 45mph possible on the
north facing slopes of the Tug Hill and in the Black River Valley to
near Fort Drum.
The second phase of winds will be post-cold frontal, with around 45
knots available in the boundary layer behind the cold front as lapse
rates steepen in the cold advection. This will support gusts of up
to 50 mph in the typical areas along and northeast of Lake Erie and
extending across the Niagara Frontier to near Rochester. Southwest
gusts nearing 50 mph may also extend into Jefferson County by late
morning and afternoon.
Temperatures will remain warm through much of tonight before
dropping back into the 40s before daybreak across far Western NY.
Temperatures will continue to slowly drop through the day Friday
with cold advection in the wake of the cold front.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The main mid level trough will cross the region Friday night,
along with a secondary cold front and an area of deeper wrap
around moisture. As the lobe of moisture drops back across the
Great Lakes region Friday late afternoon and evening, along with
temperatures at 850 hPa dropping to around -6 to -9C, and
increasing lapse rates, expect showers to redevelop, with
greatest extent over the upslope regions east of both Great
Lakes. Rain will change to snow with the building cold air, with
minor accumulations across higher terrain Friday night.
Cold air will continue to pour over the Eastern Great Lakes Saturday
and Saturday night, with temperatures marginally becoming cold
enough to support a little lake effect snow. This activity would
primarily be southeast of the Lakes...with again minor snow
accumulation.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A chilly northwest flow will remain in place across the eastern
Great Lakes Sunday as high pressure builds into the Ohio Valley.
Enough marginal lake instability will remain to support a few
scattered snow showers southeast of the lakes, with little in the
way of additional accumulation. Temperatures will remain below
normal, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s for most areas.
A northern stream shortwave will drop south-southeast from James
Bay through Quebec Canada and then across the lower Great Lakes
beginning Sunday night through Monday. Meanwhile, a weak wave
will also be in the process of round the base of the mid-level
trough Sunday night. With cold northerly flow (850 hPa temperatures
of -13C to -15C) and the support from these shortwave a few more
snow showers-flurries and limited lake enhanced snow will continue
south-southeast of the lakes through Monday. After that, expect dry
conditions with high pressure over the upper Midwest building east
across the lower Great Lakes Monday night through Tuesday. Also, a
gradual warming trend will initiate across the region with high
temperatures approach near normal. Beyond Tuesday, significant
differences arise among model guidance packages regarding the next
system track and timing.
The 00Z ECMWF maintains a strong ridge of high pressure over the
region, while the GFS has more downstream blocking and allows for a
pool of cold air and associated showers to drop across NYS/New
England.

.AVIATION /17Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR conditions will continue to prevail through this evening with
extensive high clouds. A few showers will clip far Western NY this
afternoon and early evening. The showers will be light, with
CIGS/VSBY remaining VFR in most areas.
A cold front will cross the area later tonight and early Friday. A
better chance of more widespread showers will develop ahead of the
cold front, reaching Western NY by late evening or early overnight
before spreading east of Lake Ontario before daybreak Friday. The
heavier showers will produce a few areas of MVFR CIGS/VSBY. There is
a chance of a few thunderstorms as well across Western NY. The rain
will taper off from west to east late tonight and Friday morning
with the passage of the cold front.
A period of low level wind shear will develop tonight as a strong
60+ knot low level jet crosses the area. The low level wind shear
will end with the passage of the cold front.
CIGS will primarily be VFR late tonight and most of Friday behind
the cold front. The one possible exception is the potential for a
brief period of IFR over and northeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario
late tonight and early Friday morning as still moist air crosses the
cold/ice covered lakes. If this does materialize it may impact KBUF
and KART for a few hours.
Outlook...
Friday night...MVFR to IFR in widespread rain showers changing to
snow showers.
Saturday...Local MVFR/IFR in snow showers southeast of the lakes.
Sunday...Mainly VFR.
Sunday night and Monday...Local MVFR/IFR with a chance of snow
showers.
Tuesday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
Strong low pressure will move across the Upper Great Lakes tonight
before moving into western and northern Quebec Friday. A trailing
cold front will cross the eastern Great Lakes late tonight and
Friday morning. Southerly winds will increase tonight ahead of the
system, then become southwest Friday before becoming west Friday
night and Saturday. This will bring an extended period of Small
Craft Advisory conditions tonight through Saturday on Lake Erie, and
late tonight through at least Sunday on Lake Ontario.

.HYDROLOGY...
Warmer weather in the 50s is expected today and Friday for the
eastern Lake Ontario region. Snowmelt will increase, as well as
a round of rainfall tonight and Friday. Rainfall amounts will
not be significant with this system, a quarter to half inch on
average east of Lake Ontario.
The warming temperatures will bring an elevated risk of ice
break-up and movement. Cumulative Thawing Degree Hours will
easily reach the threshold typically needed to cause river and
creek ice to break up and start to move. This will bring some
risk of ice jams to prone rivers east of Lake Ontario, but the
lack of heavy rainfall will keep the risk of associated flooding
more limited.
Some of the higher elevations of the Tug Hill and western
Foothills of the Adirondacks still have a significant snowpack
of over two feet with water equivalents of 8 to 12 inches. The
snowpack will initially absorb runoff and snowmelt, but
eventually will begin to release water tonight and Friday.
At this time, given the lack of significant rainfall, we are not
expecting a significant flood risk. There is some low risk of
flooding from ice jams, and there will be significant within-
bank rises along the Black River by the weekend with this being
a slow responding river.
This potential will need to be monitored closely over the next few
days. Those living along creeks and rivers east of Lake Ontario
should monitor river conditions.
