At 1216 PM EST, a dangerous snow squall was located along a line
extending from near Henrietta to near Pembroke, moving southeast at
15 mph.

HAZARD...Extremely poor visibility heavy snow and blowing snow. Wind 
         gusts up to 30 mph.

SOURCE...Radar and webcams.

IMPACT...Dangerous life-threatening travel.

This includes the following highways...
 Interstate 390 between exits 10 and 12.
 Interstate 90 between exits 48A and 44.

Locations impacted include...
Rochester, Clarence, Chili, Batavia, Canandaigua, East Rochester,
Fairport, Brighton, Darien Lakes State Park and Henrietta.

.SYNOPSIS...
Lake effect snow will be heavy today east of the lakes as a strong
cold front crosses the area. Outside of lake effect areas, the cold
front will produce snow showers and a few brief heavy snow squalls.
Lake effect snow will continue tonight into Thursday southeast of
the lakes before tapering off Thursday night. Very cold air will
arrive this afternoon afternoon through Thursday with wind chills
below zero at times. A period of mainly dry weather and warming
temperatures will then begin this weekend and continue through at
least the first half of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
...Periods of Heavy Lake Effect Snow...Blowing Snow and Plummeting
Temperatures Today...

Off Lake Erie...

Regional radars showing the Lake Erie lake effect snow has become
disrupted by the first cold frontal boundary crossing the area. A
few pockets of moderate snow will continue to move from the western
Southern Tier east through the western Finger Lakes. The lake effect
snow will likely remain disorganized through early afternoon as
boundary layer flow veers over Lake Erie, shortening the fetch.
Mesoscale guidance and upstream radar/satellite trends continue to
suggest a robust Lake Huron connection will develop later this
afternoon, initially targeting northern Chautauqua and
northern/western Cattaraugus counties. This developing upstream
connection will allow the Lake Erie lake snow to intensify again
later this afternoon.

This upstream Lake Huron connection will then move slowly
southwestward across the western Southern Tier late this afternoon
and tonight as boundary layer flow continues to veer. The heaviest
snow will likely fall through the first half of tonight. Later
tonight, lowering inversion heights and eventually a loss of the
Lake Huron connection will allow the band to weaken.

Placement of where the heaviest snows is tough to pinpoint in a
multiple band structure, but it seems reasonable that the focus
would be across the northern half of Chautauqua county to
western Cattaraugus county. The heaviest snowfall amounts will
likely be closely tied to the upstream Lake Huron connection
with the potential storm totals of 6-12 inches, with localized
heavier amounts certainly possible.

Off Lake Ontario...

Regional radars showing an intense band of heavy snow, likely
producing 3-4 inch per hour snowfall rates at times. This band has
drifted south into central/northern Oswego County and the southern
Tug Hill. The arctic front is still just upstream of the band.
Boundary layer flow will likely back slightly over the next hour or
two just ahead of the arctic front, carrying the band back over the
central Tug Hill for an hour or two, before it moves back south
again in the wake of the arctic front. The band should continue to
produce high end 3-4 inch per hour snowfall rates through midday,
and may produce some thunder and lightning as well.

This afternoon boundary layer flow will quickly veer to the
northwest, shoving the lake band to the southeast corner of the
lake. Snowfall rates will likely diminish considerably after the
flow becomes northwest by mid afternoon.

Once the northwest flow becomes established, multiple lake effect
snow bands will develop. The intensity of the bands will likely
depend on the expected upstream Georgian Bay connection during
the mid to late afternoon. The heaviest snows should focus
across the southeast portion of the lake across Wayne, Northern
Cayuga, and southwest Oswego counties by mid to late afternoon,
but this will depend upon the exact evolution of the upstream
Georgian Bay connection.

a Georgian Bay to Lake Ontario connection will remain in place
through the night and into the morning on Thursday. This will result
in continued lake snows for the Rochester Metro area through the
early morning hours, and much of the south shore of the lake. Early
in the night can expect the best chances for accumulating snow as
snowfall will be moderate for a few hours. Through the course of the
night increased ridging will start to help lower equilibrium heights
over the lake, which will cause the snow to start to get lighter in
intensity through the morning hours. In addition to the ridging,
synoptic moisture will shift east of the area, giving way to drier
air. With the multi lake connection still supporting the lake band
there will be continued light snow through daybreak with additional
weakening after that time. Snow accumulation's through the night
will generally be around 3-5 inches in the most persistent snows,
with most of this falling during the first half of the night. A
Winter Weather Advisory will be in place through this period for
counties along the south shore of Lake Ontario from Orleans County
to Northern Cayuga County.

Finally, between the main areas of lake effect snow the cold front
will produce a few snow showers and snow squalls this morning across
much of the region. A spray of Lake Huron snow showers is also
likely across much of the region this afternoon, with relatively
light accumulations away from the main lake effect areas. Blowing
snow will be common today with wind gusts up to 40 mph on the lake
plains, and 30 mph farther inland.

Strong cold air advection will send temperatures tumbling through
the day today. Readings in the 20s early in the day will be in the
teens by the end of the day with wind chills falling below zero.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Tonight, lake effect snow will continue south of Lake Ontario
and southeast of Lake Erie. Continued cold air advection will
drop temperatures through the night, with 850H temperatures
dropping to around -20C overnight. This will result in low
temperatures in the single digits for most areas with some
subzero temperatures east of Lake Ontario.

Off Lake Ontario... As winds continue out of the northwest through
the night, a Georgian Bay to Lake Ontario connection will remain in
place through the night and into the morning on Thursday. This will
result in continued lake snows for the Rochester Metro area through
the early morning hours. Early in the night can expect the best
chances for accumulating snow as snowfall will be moderate for a few

Off of Lake Erie... Much like off of Lake Ontario, a multi lake
connection will help drop some moderate to heavy snowfall at time
early Wednesday night for areas southeast of Lake Erie. The lake
band, initially pre-conditioning/developing over lake Huron will
cross SW Ontario and over Lake Erie where additional strengthening
will occur. Much like the Lake Ontario band, the greatest chance for
accumulating snow will be earlier on in the night before ridging and
increasingly drier air begin to influence the band, causing it to
weaken to light snow through the morning. This band having a bit
more of Lake Huron to work with upstream, looks like the stronger of
the two lake bands, and additional snowfall Wednesday night will
generally be 4-7 inches with some locally higher amounts along the
higher terrain. A Lake Effect snow warning remains in place through
7AM Thursday morning for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties.

Outside of the two main lake bands, some disorganized lake snow
showers from the upper Great Lakes will drop some light snow across
the rest of the area, especially as the trough continues across the
area. Areas outside of the main lake bands can expect up to around a
half inch of accumulation, falling mostly early in the night.

Thursday, a large area of high pressure will be centered over the
Ohio Valley around daybreak on Thursday, and slowly track east to
the central Appalachians by Thursday night. AS this high tracks
east, continued increased ridging and drier air entrainment will
continue to weaken and break down lake snows off of both lakes.
Likely POPs for light snow showers southeast of both lakes will
continue to decrease through the morning, with just chance POPs by
the afternoon hours. Additional accumulation's of around a half inch
to one inch will be possible southeast of the lakes, falling mostly
early in the morning. 850H temperatures on Thursday will continue to
be near -20C with some slight warming late in the day. Temperatures
on Thursday will be in the single digits to low teens east of Lake
Ontario and in the upper teens to low 20s elsewhere.

Surface high pressure will linger over the region Thursday night
into Friday while a upper level ridge persists over southeast U.S.
Cold temperatures expected Thursday night with lows in the single
digits to teens across western NY to the minus single digits east of
Lake Ontario. Temperatures will rebound to the upper 20s to low 30s
across western NY to the teens east of Lake Ontario Friday.

Surface high pressure will track into New England and winds will
become light and southerly Friday night. Another chilly night
expected with lows in the teens across western NY to the minus
single digits east of Lake Ontario. A fast moving shortwave trough
may track across the Great Lakes Saturday while a cold front moves
across the region. Very little moisture is associated with this
feature and may only produce some passing clouds. Temperatures look
to break freezing across western NY Saturday with highs in the mid
to upper 30s and the upper 20s to low 30s east of Lake Ontario.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Fairly quiet weather continues through the Christmas holiday across
the eastern Great Lakes. Another fast moving shortwave trough will
likely track across Canada Saturday night into Sunday with moisture
staying north of the border and  marginal temperatures. Greatest
chance of rain or snow showers will be east of Lake Ontario, closer
to the surface low. High pressure will move back into the region
Monday and Monday night before the next shortwave trough tracks to
the north.

Temperatures will climb above normal Sunday into early next week
with highs in the upper 30s to low 40s and overnight lows in the
upper 20s to low 30s.

.AVIATION /15Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A clipper passing north of Lake Ontario will cause general
widespread snow showers this morning, resulting in IFR/MVFR for
areas outside of heavier lake bands.

Lake effect snow initially east of Lake Ontario and east of
Lake Erie will shift southward with a passing cold front and
settle to the southeast of the Lake Erie and south of Lake
Ontario. Moderate to heavy snow within these two snow bands
along with blowing snow, will produced IFR with some LIFR
conditions possible during the peak of lake snow band intensity.

Conditions today for each terminal: KART has improved to mainly
VFR as lake effect snow moves south of the airfield. A few brief
bursts of IFR VSBY are still possible today in brief snow
showers. KJHW can expect periods of IFR/LIFR conditions through
the day today and into the night tonight with the Lake Erie
snow band. KROC can expect IFR with some periods of LIFR from
this afternoon through the evening as the Lake Ontario snow band
drops south over the KROC terminal. KBUF/KIAG mostly MVFR with
a brief period of early IFR with the passing cold front and snow
showers.

Tonight, the lake bands settle southeast of Lake Erie and south of
Lake Ontario, with primarily JHW and ROC affected by falling snow.
Both locations can expect IFR with periods of LIFR through the
evening. Some improvement for ROC to mostly IFR and to MVFR by the
morning on Thursday. JHW conditions remain IFR with periods of LIFR
through most of the night. Outside of these lake bands, KART, KBUF,
and KIAG VFR with some MVFR.

Outlook...

Thursday...IFR/MVFR with lake effect snow showers likely southeast
of the lakes...with mainly VFR elsewhere.
Friday through Monday...VFR.

.MARINE...
A strong cold front will cross the area early Wednesday morning.
Moderate to strong WSW winds early this morning will quickly veer to
the northwest by late in the day. Winds look to peak at 30
knots on both Lakes Erie and Ontario, producing high end Small
Craft Advisories on both lakes. Winds will gradually diminish
later tonight and Thursday as high pressure builds into the
Great Lakes.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A strong cold front will cross the eastern Great Lakes this
morning. Strong northwest winds will develop in the wake of the
cold front, with sustained winds peaking at around or just over
30 knots on Lake Ontario. This will bring the increased likelihood
of lakeshore flooding at the southeast corner of the lake from
Wayne to Oswego counties.

A band of lake effect snow producing snow fall rate of 2 to 3 inches
per hour will continue east of Lake Ontario this morning. The
heaviest snow will be found from central Oswego County northeast
across the Tug Hill region.

The band will likely drift north again temporarily during the mid
morning before moving back south late this morning.

Travel will be extremely difficult in this band of intense lake
effect snow. If you must travel, be prepared for severe winter
driving conditions with deep snow cover on roads and near zero
visibility.

...A BAND OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL AFFECT SOUTHERN JEFFERSON...LEWIS
AND NORTHERN OSWEGO COUNTIES...

A band of lake effect snow producing snow fall rates of 2 to 3
inches per hour will continue east of Lake Ontario this morning. The
heaviest snow will be found from southern Jefferson, central and
southern Lewis, and northern Oswego counties.

The band will move a few miles to the north during the remainder of
the morning before moving south again early this afternoon.

Travel will be extremely difficult in this band of intense lake
effect snow. If you must travel, be prepared for severe winter
driving conditions with deep snow cover on roads and near zero
visibility.

This includes Interstate 81 between exits 33 and 44.

...BAND OF SNOW MOVING SOUTHEAST TOWARD THE LAKE ONTARIO SHORELINE
OF NIAGARA, ORLEANS, AND MONROE COUNTIES...

A narrow band of snow is quickly moving southeast toward the Lake
Ontario shoreline of Niagara, Orleans, and Monroe counties.  This
band has the potential to briefly drop visibilities to near a
quarter of a mile, including over Route 104.  Winds ahead of the
band are out of the west, but will switch to the northwest with
gusts nearing 40 mph.  This will result in some blowing and drifting
snow at times. Temperatures will also start to fall toward the 20
degree mark after the boundary moves through.

Travel will be difficult as the band moves overhead.  Road
conditions behind the band will also be variable due to drifting
snow.

OF WAYNE, NORTHERN CAYUGA, AND WESTERN OSWEGO COUNTIES...

A new band of lake effect snow is moving southeast toward the Lake
Ontario shoreline of Wayne, northern Cayuga, and western Oswego
counties. By early afternoon, this band should effectively replace
the strong band currently moving across Northern Oswego and Tug Hill
Plateau.  In both cases, expect difficult travel conditions with
some whiteouts.  Snow rates are expected to be more variable for
this new band, with rates of 1, to briefly 3 inches per hour.  Winds
will also increase with the new band, with some gusts 40 mph.  This
will result in some blowing and drifting snow at times. Temperatures
will also start to fall toward the 20 degree mark early this
afternoon.
